PROPOSAL

How Are Big Car Brands Making the Move from Petrol to
Electric Cars?

My production will be taking on an investigative documentary

style role. This programme will be looking at the question
of how big car brands are making the move from petrol to
electric cars. This is an important topic, because it is
something that will be affecting everyone in the near future,
with the upcoming electrical revolution approaching. Soon
enough, we will all be making the move to electric, so why not
use this as an opportunity to educate people on what this will
look like for everyone?

Throughout this documentary, I will be investigating the

basics of electric cars,
however I want to take it
down the not-so-obvious route
and start looking at the
challenges this change is
causing for the most popular
car brands. I want to work
with a car dealership local
to me and discover the
obstacles they may be facing,
highlighting this through
lots of interviews and B-
Roll, to help the minds of those watching process what
specifically we are talking about.

Hopefully, I will be able to create this piece so that it is

understood by all viewers, but also so that it is appealing
and interesting to watch, with a different point of view on
this new element of the car world. I want this production to
be one of my best visual productions yet, with lots of effort
being poured into what I want the viewers to be asking,
thinking, and concluding.

For this project, I was given the target audience of BBC 4/BBC
Radio 4’s ‘Today’ Audience. To summarise, this means viewers
and listeners around the age of 35+, therefore this is who I
aimed my research towards and kept in mind when considering my
ideas in detail.

In order to ensure that my production will be suitable for my

target audience, I conducted target audience research and
codes and conventions research for several weeks. After
several interviews and a survey, I can infer that my
production should include interviews, with people who have
interesting, truthful experiences to talk about. As well as
this, my production should be able to teach my target audience
something new, steering them away from the general news and
PROPOSAL
introducing them to a new story based on current affairs
that has been looked at from a different perspective. This
way, I can keep them appealed and wanting to delve deeper
into my investigation.

I am producing this production, not only because I have such

a passion for all things cars, but also because I know that
this will be a topic that interests others as well. More
specifically, I know that I can present this topic in a way
that will interest my target audience, providing them with a
documentary that offers an insightful and accurate
investigation. Additionally, with my enthusiasm for this
subject, I know that I will produce a piece of the highest
standard, that really showcases my knowledge, as well as the
academic and practical skills that I have acquired throughout
this course so far.

In order to stay organised, I have created a production

schedule that divides my work up weekly, ensuring it all gets
completed in time before our deadline on 16th December 2022. To
stay on top of the evaluative side of things, I have also
decided to create weekly blogs that will manage and analyse my
progress too.

When my production is complete, I will

upload it to YouTube, since it is free
and accessible for everyone, but also a
great platform for documentaries and
programmes based on current affairs. This
means that with the right tags, it will
reach my target audience and hopefully be
successful.

Overall, I will be creating an informative, insightful,

investigative documentary that shines a light on the different
perspectives circulating electric cars. Throughout my
documentary, I will be speaking to different experts on how
the evolution of electric cars has affected their career/car
manufacturing team. This will allow me to hear a range of
voices, with people who have experienced these issues first-
hand being able to speak from personal points of view. My
priority is my target audience and through this, I know that I
will be able to win them over, teaching them new things and
letting them hear different voices, discussing the issues
raised.
