What’s New

I. Arrange the jumbled letter and rewrite the sentence on activity

note book.

1. Cutdrocn is a material that permits electric charge to pass. The

movement of charge is called ceterilc current.

2. Toralusin is a material that does not permit electric hacrge to pass. It

resists the flow of current.

3. Conimesrucdot is a material that allows current to pass in-between

conductor and insulator. It has control on whether to allow of resist
the charge to pass through.

4. The niotcudnoc in a conductor happens because of the free electrons

in the bonds between metals while in a semiconductor the
conductivity lies on the movement of electrons and holes.

5. When the permetature of a conductor increases its resistance also

increases while in an insulator increases its rancetsise as the
temperature decreases.

9
What is It

Everything that surrounds us is matter. You have learned in your chemistry

class that all matter is made up of atom which is composed of three particles
namely: electron, proton and neutrons. Each material has different arrangement of
atoms which determines their electric conductivity.

Things that allows the flow of current to pass through is called b These
includes iron, silver, gold and other metals. Insulators, on the other hand, hinders
the flow of current; rubber, paper, wood, plastics and the likes are examples of it.
Moreover, semiconductors are materials that control the flow of current, whether
to allow or hinder it from passing. Semiconductor sometimes undergo alteration by
adding some substances in the process called doping. Silicon, Germanium and
gallium arsenide are common examples of semiconductors. In your periodic table,
the staircase metalloids are also an example of semiconductors.

Structure

Insulator and conductors are both alike in terms of atomic level and are
arranged in different ways. Let us take wood as an example, it is made up of
different atoms like hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen which are arrange in a certain
form. On the other hand, conductors are made up of Iron, Niobium Oxide, Copper
and other metallic elements, but has different structures from wood. This case has
both similarities in basic composition but differs in form.

Hardness and Softness

Conductors and insulators possess both hardness and softness features.

Sulfur, for example, is a soft material but resists current which makes it an
insulator. Sodium, on the on the other hand, is also soft material but is a good
conductor. Iron is a hard metal which makes it a conductor, but fiber glass is also
a hard material, but is an insulator. This only means that softness and hardness of
a material does not affect the conductivity of the material.

10
How do insulator, conductor and semiconductor differ?

Characteristics

Conductivity determines the difference of insulator, conductor and

semiconductor. The table below their differences.

Uses of Insulators, Conductors and Semiconductors

Conductors

Conductors allow to transfer not only electric energy, but also other form of
energy like heat. This make conductors very useful in our daily living. Almost every
day, we use conductors. It is used in the following:

1. Electric cables. Copper wire is used for cables for electric circuit in our
homes. It is use for cables due to its conductivity and high resistance to heat
and air moisture.
2. To Iron Clothing. We use iron to make our clothes tidy. A metal conductor
is connected at the base of the iron directed to the clothes. On top of the iron
there is an insulator, a rubber or plastic material for protection and
convenience of the user.
3. For Cooking Equipment. Skillet and other cookware are made up of
aluminum which is a light material and good conductor.
4. Soldering. It is a process to connect or fixed electronic components. It is
usually done in an electronic workshop or welding shops.

Insulators

Insulators are the opposite of conductors. They prevent the passage of electric
charge and other forms of energy like heat and sounds. Some applications of
insulators are the following;

1. Electrical Insulators. We use electrical insulators to prevent the flow of

charge. We use them in different circuit and systems with high voltage.
2. Thermal insulators. This prevent the heat to be transferred from one
medium to another. You can sometimes find this in ceilings and walls of
airconditioned rooms.
3. Sound Insulators. This is used for soundproofing an audiovisual room,
cinemas and even in closed classrooms to make them free from noise.

Semiconductors

As you already know, semiconductors can prevent or allow electric charge to

flow. This is why it is very useful in may appliances and devices which help people
in their daily lives.

12
1. It is used in electric kettle which automatically turns off after the water
boils. The same principle is use in rice cookers and other cooking devices
2. Inside your gadget, like cellphones and computers, there are small part
called integrated circuits, diodes and transistors which also serves as
semiconductors.
3. Semiconductors are also use in optical fiber communication which delivers
faster communications.
4. Have you heard about the self-driving cars? These are possible because of
the semiconductors.

What’s More

I. Test Me. Inside the box below, illustrate or write down the
materials that you will need to test whether the materials on the
given table are insulator or conductor. Then complete the data
needed in the table. Write your answer in your answer sheet. You
may copy the box and the table.

13
II. Write conductor, semiconductor or insulator and write them in your activity
notebook.

_________1. Conduction happens because of the free electrons in the metallic

bonds.
_________2. It does not require energy because there is no or low energy gap.
_________3. It has no conduction because there is no significant movement of
electrons and holes.
_________4. Its resistance increases as the temperature increases.
_________5. It is a material that does not permits the progression of charge.

Answer the following questions briefly. Write your answer in

1. What is a conductor?

Conductor is _____________________________________. Examples of this

are ______________________________________. It is used to

____________________________.

2. Define insulator.

Insulator resists _______________________________________. This is

because ______________________________________. It is used to

___________________________________________________.

3. Explain semiconductor.

Semiconductor controls the ___________________________________. This

is possible because of the ______________________________. Usually, it is use
in ____________________________________. Examples are
_______________________.

14
