1. Introduction to IoT Devices
The Internet of things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects that are embedded
with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging
data with other devices and systems over the Internet.
Things have evolved due to the convergence of multiple technologies, real-
time analytics, machine learning, commodity sensors, and embedded systems. Traditional
fields of embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation , and
others all contribute to enabling the Internet of things. In the consumer market, IoT technology
is most synonymous with products pertaining to the concept of the "smart home", including
devices and appliances (such as lighting fixtures, thermostats, home security systems and
cameras, and other home appliances) that support one or more common ecosystems, and can
be controlled via devices associated with that ecosystem, such as smartphones and smart
speakers.
There are a number of serious concerns about dangers in the growth of IoT, especially in
the areas of privacy and security, and consequently industry and governmental moves to
address these concerns have begun including the development of international standards.
The Internet of Things offers numerous benefits to organizations. Most modern
enterprises are already leveraging IoT to automate and simplify many of their daily tasks.
Connected devices are being integrated into existing and evolving business processes. IoT
devices are devices connected via the internet to transmit and receive information from other
devices, systems, or people in the network. IoT devices give us the authority to manage and
control these internet-connected devices from anywhere in the world.

2. Uses of IOT Devices

Uses of IOT devices are:
 Wearables.
These are small and energy efficient devices, which are equipped with sensors, with the
necessary hardware for measurements and readings, and with software to collect and
organize data and information about users. Virtual glasses, fitness bands to monitor for
example calorie expenditure and heart beats, or GPS tracking belts, are some examples of
wearable devices

 Health.
Another use is the integration of IoT technology into hospital beds, giving way to smart
beds, equipped with special sensors to observe vital signs, blood pressure, oximeter, and
body temperature, among others.

 Traffic monitoring.
The Internet of things can be very useful in the management of vehicular traffic in large
cities, contributing to the concept of smart cities.

11
 Fleet management.
The installation of sensors in fleet vehicles helps to establish an effective interconnectivity
between the vehicles and their managers as well as between the vehicles and their drivers.
Both driver and manager/ owner can know all kinds of details about the status, operation
and needs of the vehicle, just by accessing the software.

 Agriculture.
Smart farms are a fact. The quality of soil is crucial to produce good crops, and the Internet
of Things offers farmers the possibility to access detailed knowledge and valuable
information of their soil condition. Through the implementation of IoT sensors, a
significant amount of data can be obtained on the state and stages of the soil.

 Hospitality.
The application of the IoT to the hotel industry brings with it interesting improvements in
the quality of the service. With the implementation of electronic keys, which are sent
directly to the mobile devices of each guest, it is possible to automate various interactions.

 Water supply.
A sensor, either incorporated or adjusted externally to water meters, connected to the
Internet and accompanied by the necessary software , helps to collect, process and analyse
data, which allows understanding the behaviour of consumers, detecting faults in the supply
service, report results and offer courses of action to the company that provides the service.

3. Advantages of IOT Devices

 IoT devices utilize the machine to machine interaction which provides seamless
communication among the devices.
 They help in making daily activities faster and simpler without requiring any human
intervention. For example, managing the temperature of the room according to the
settings every time the weather changes.
 Reduces labor costs and the time required to complete a task by automating it.
 It provides remote accessibility and control over internet-connected devices.
 Providing real-time data to detect any failure and take timely action.
 Ease in managing and controlling the devices remotely.

4. Disadvantages of IOT Devices

 Possibility of security threat due to data breach.

 Loss of manual jobs and lesser employment opportunities due to the automation of
tasks.
 Complex failures may arise in the system.

12
 The absence of international compatibility standards can lead to difficulty in
assembling the IoT device.

5. Iot Devices:

5.1. Amazon Echo:

Amazon Echo is a brand of smart speakers developed by Amazon. It is one of the best
devices of IoT. Echo devices connect to the voice-controlled intelligent personal assistant
service Alexa, which will respond when you say the name "Alexa". Users may change this
wake word to "Amazon", "Echo" or "Computer". The features of the device include voice
interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, and
playing audiobooks, in addition to providing weather, traffic and other real-time information.
It can also control several smart devices, acting as a home automation hub. The smart speaker
needs to use Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet as there is no Ethernet port.

In the default mode, the device continuously listens to all speech, monitoring for the
wake word to be spoken, which is primarily set up as "Alexa" (derived from Alexa Internet,
the Amazon-owned Internet indexing company). Echo's microphones can be manually
disabled by pressing a mute button to turn off the audio processing circuit. Echo devices require
a wireless Internet connection in order to work. Echo's voice recognition capability is based
on Amazon Web Services and the voice platform Amazon acquired from Yap, Evi, and
IVONA (a Polish-based specialist in voice technologies used in the Kindle Fire).

The smart speakers perform well with a "good" (low latency) Internet connection, which
minimizes processing time due to minimal communication round trips, streaming responses
and geo-distributed service endpoints. While the application is free, an Amazon account is
required, and setup is not possible without one.

Fig.no.2 Amazon Echo

13
Features of Amazon Echo:

 Voice Services:
The Alexa Voice Service (AVS) allows developers to voice-enable connected products
with a microphone and speaker. The AVS enables volume control, audio playback, and
speech recognition.
 Software updates:
As with all Alexa devices, the functionality of Echo smart speakers periodically evolves
as Amazon releases new software for it. Most new releases fix bugs in addition to
including enhanced functionality.
 Smart Home:
The Amazon Echo is able to connect to many different smart home devices. Alexa can
be used to activate and deactivate all of these smart home appliances, as well as change
their settings depending on the device.
 Hands-free:
Amazon Echo are able to make calls and send messages. Users can make calls to
another Amazon Echo or speaker that is in the house by calling the device name. Users
can also make calls and send messages to other people that have an Amazon Echo.
 Music:
The amazon Echo supports a multitude of subscription-based and free streaming
services on Amazon devices. These streaming services include: Prime Music, Amazon
Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Audible,
Pandora, and Spotify Premium.
 Sports:
Amazon Echo allows the user to hear updates on supported sports teams. A way to do
this is by adding the sports team to the list created under Alexa's Sports Update app
section.

 Messaging and calls:

There are a number of ways messages can be sent from Amazon Echo application. Echo
can deliver messages to a recipient's Echo application, as well as to all supported Alexa
devices associated with their Amazon account.
 Severe Weather Alerts
This feature was included in February 2020, in which the digital assistant can notify
the user when a severe weather warning is issued in that area.[

14
5.2. Smart Doorbell Cam:
Doorbell Cam is a home security and smart home company owned by Amazon. The
intelligent doorbell cam is an innovative IoT invention that helps homeowners by notifying
them when visitors arrive at the doorway or pressing the doorbell. It enables owners to watch
the visitors and speak to them. It hosts an app, Neighbors, for online social sharing of captured
footage among users. Doorbell also provides video footage from its cameras and data from its
Neighbors app to law enforcement agencies on request. Its police partnerships have been
criticized by civil rights advocacy groups as building an invasive private surveillance network.

A doorbell is a signaling device typically placed near a door to a building's entrance.

When a visitor presses a button the bell rings inside the building, alerting the occupant to the
presence of the visitor. Although the first doorbells were mechanical, activated by pulling a
cord connected to a bell, modern doorbells are electric, operated by a pushbutton switch.
Modern doorbells often incorporate intercoms and miniature video cameras to increase
security.

In larger metropolitan cities, a trend has developed over the past decade that uses
telephone technology to wirelessly signal doorbells as well as to answer the doors and remotely
release electric strikes. In many cities throughout the world, this is the predominant form of
doorbell signaling.

Fig.No.3 Doorbell Cam

Features of Smart Doorbell Cam:

 Home security:
Its a wireless IP camera which notifies the homeowner when visitors arrive at the
doorway or pressing the doorbell. It enables owners to watch the visitors and speak to
them.

5.4. Air Pollution Monitor Device:

Air pollution is the biggest problem of every nation, whether it is developed or

developing. Health problems have been growing at faster rate especially in urban areas of
developing countries where industrialization and growing number of vehicles leads to release
of lot of gaseous pollutants. Harmful effects of pollution include mild allergic reactions such
as irritation of the throat, eyes and nose as well as some serious problems like bronchitis, heart
diseases, pneumonia, lung and aggravated asthma. According to a survey, due to air pollution
50,000 to 100,000 premature deaths per year occur in the U.S. alone. Whereas in EU number
reaches to 300,000 and over 3,000,000 worldwide.

The level of pollution is increasing rapidly due to factors like industries, urbanization,
increasing in population, vehicle use which can affect human health. IOT Based Air Pollution
Monitoring System is used to monitor the Air Quality over a web server using Internet. It will
trigger an alarm when the air quality goes down beyond a certain level, means when there are
sufficient amount of harmful gases present in the air like CO2, smoke, alcohol, benzene, NH3
and NOx.

The system will show the air quality in PPM on the LCD and as well as on webpage so
that it can be monitored very easily. Temperature and Humidity is detected and monitored in
the system. The system can be installed anywhere but mostly in industries and houses where
gases are mostly to be found and gives an alert message when the system crosses threshold
limit.

LPG gas is detected using MQ6 sensor and MQ135 sensor is used for monitoring Air
Quality as it detects most harmful gases and can measure their amount accurately. In this IOT
project, it can monitor the pollution level from anywhere using your computer or mobile. This
system can be installed anywhere and can also trigger some device when pollution goes beyond
some level, like we can send alert SMS to the user.

Fig no: 5 Air Pollution Monitor Device

18
MQ135 gas sensor will give the output in form of voltage levels and we have to
convert it into PPM. So for converting the output in PPM, we have used a library for MQ135
gas sensor and MQ6 sensor.

Sensor is giving us value of 90 when there is no gas near it and the air quality safe
level is 350 PPM and it should not exceed 1000 PPM. When it will exceed the limit of 1000
PPM, it will cause Headaches, sleepiness and stagnant, stuffy air. If it exceeds beyond 2000
PPM then it will cause increased heart rate and many different diseases. When the value will
be less than 1000 PPM, then the LCD and webpage will display “Fresh Air”. When the value
will increase from 1000 PPM, then the buzzer will start beeping and the LCD and webpage
will display “Poor Air, Open Windows”. And when it will increase 2000, the buzzer will keep
beeping and give an alert message on smartphone through GSM. The LCD and webpage will
display “Danger! Move to fresh Air”. It will contain temperature and humidity so it will
possibly show the current temperature and humidity of the air. For temperature we have used
LM35 sensor and for humidity SY-HS-220.

According to the model the 4 sensors works as input data, they transmit data for
knowing which gas it is, what is the temperature and humidity. LCD and Buzzer are the output
devices. LCD shows the data of the gases in ppm (parts per million) and Buzzer is used when
ppm crosses above a threshold limit.

5.5.1. Google Smart home devices are:

1) Google Nest Mini:

The Google Nest Mini is the second generation of the Google Home Mini, and the
smallest of Google's speaker range. Because of its diminutive size, the Nest Mini can be placed
virtually anywhere, including wall-mounted, and even kept out of sight if you wish. The Nest
Mini meanwhile, also has a physical microphone mute button, but the volume tap controls are
now next to the LED lights on the top of the device and there's an ultrasound detector built-in
that lights up when your hand approaches, allowing you to tap to pause too.

The Nest Mini gives you access to all Google Assistant features, so it's a smart home
control device, an entertainer and a plaything. Your Google Home smart speaker (Google
Home Max or Mini) needs a strong and secure Wi-Fi connection to work.

5.5.2. Google Nest Audio:

Nest Audio refreshes Google's original speaker, boosting eco credentials with more
recycled material, while bringing in a fresh new design too. Rather than 360-degree sound, the
sound is now directional, but with a good size of speaker driver and a tweeter in this compact
unit, the sound quality is really good for the price.
All the Google Assistant functions are supported, and the Nest Audio can be stereo
paired to make a bigger sound delivery. One thing is clear - there's no reason to consider the
old Google Home - the Nest Audio is better in every way.
Nest and Google Home devices are Wi-Fi speakers and can therefore stream music
directly from the cloud. You can access songs, playlists, albums, artists, and podcasts from
your favourite music services with just your voice. Or, if you prefer, you can send music from
your Android or iOS device through Google Cast.

5.5.3 Google Nest Hub Max:
The Google Nest Hub Max is the biggest Home device with a display and ushered in
the name change to Nest. That's because it incorporates a camera which can not only be used
for Duo calling, but offers full Nest Cam functions too, so it also acts as a security device. It
will also work with Nest's face recognition, so it can change the display details to suit different
users, though it doesn't deliver familiar face alerts like the Nest Hello or Nest Cam IQ.

Elsewhere, the Nest Hub Max boosts the experience of the smaller display device,
expanding to 10-inches and offering stereo speakers backed with a woofer for better sound
delivery. Otherwise the Nest Hub Max supports Google Assistant offering all the experiences
you'd come to expect from Google's AI system.

6. Conclusion:
Thus, we have successfully create a project on IoT devices and its features. All the
group members will worked really hard to create this project. Due to this project we have
gained a lot of knowledge about IoT devices. We learned what IoT device, various types of
IoT devices, how it work, which sensors are used IoT devices and also learned their features.
Internet of Things can create information about the connected objects, analyse it, and make
decisions; in other words, one can tell that the Internet of Things is smarter than the Internet.
Internet of Things is the concept in which the virtual world of information technology
connected to the real world of things. The technologies of Internet of things such as RFID and
Sensor make our life become better and more comfortable.
IoT devices is used for health and safety purpose. like Air pollution monitor device is
used to monitor Air quality and when the pollution get increase then it gives a alert message.
And also detect the harmful gases. Because of this we can care about our health.
