Cornell Notes

The class notes outline how to factor polynomials by grouping common factors and factoring trinomials. Factoring is reversing the process of multiplication and writing a number as a product of other numbers or variables. To factor polynomials, you find the greatest common factor of terms, factor it out, and check the work by multiplying. Factoring trinomials involves looking for two numbers with the same sign as the middle term if the constant is positive, or with one positive and one negative factor if the constant is negative. Factoring by grouping can be used when a polynomial has four terms and common factors exist between pairs of terms.

RECALL CLASS NOTES: OUTLINE FORMAT

Factoring by grouping GCF To factor a number means to write it as a product of two or more numbers.
(Greatest Common Factor) The product is a factored form of the number.
Multiply Factoring is a process that “undoes” multiplying. We multiply 6 * 2 to
Exponent Obtain 12, but we factor 12 by writing it as 6 * 2. Other factored forms
Prime number Of 12 are -6(-2), 3*4, -3(-4), 12*1, -12(-1), and 2*2*3.
Prime factor Step 1: Factor. Write each number in prime factored form.
Primes Step 2: List common factors. List each prime number or each variable that
Factor Is a factor of every term in the list.
Trinomial Step 3: Choose least exponents. Use as exponents on the common prime
Variable Factors the least exponents from the prime factored forms.
Product Step 4: Multiply the primes from step 3. If there are no primes left after
Polynomial Step 3, the greatest common factor is 1.
The exponent on a variable in the GCF is the least exponent on that
Variable in all terms. When you are factoring terms that have a common
Factor. You must find the GCF of the terms. Then factor out the GCF, if
One exists. (Divide by GCF). Then check by multiplying. When a
Polynomial has 4 terms; common factors can sometimes be used to factor
By grouping. Factoring by grouping: 6ax+24x+a+4 = (a+4) (6x+1)
When the constant term of a trinomial is positive, look for two numbers
With the same sign. The sign is that of the middle term.
When the constant term of a trinomial is negative, look for two numbers
Whose product is negative. One must be positive and the other negative.
