Module 3 Biochemistry

This document summarizes a student's laboratory activity measuring the pH of water and household products. The student examined the pH of water, distinguished acids and bases, and calculated pH given molarity. Samples tested included water, vinegar, bleach, and bodily fluids. Results showed vinegar and citrus juices were acidic while bleach and blood plasma were basic. The student concluded pH testing with indicators determines if a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.

Activity 3

HOME-BASED LABORATORY1: pH of Water and other household products

Most Essential Learning Outcomes

At the end of the laboratory exercises, students must have:
1. examined The pH of water.
2. distinguishes between acids and bases.
3. computed for pH given the molarity of a substance.

Data and results

Attach pictures of the solutions before and after the addition of the blue ternate
(BT)indicator.

Sample Before adding After adding pH

to indicator to indicator
1. water 1 PH 8

2. water 2 PH 8

3. water 3 PH 7

4. vinegar PH 2

5. calamansi/ PH 3

Guides questions for discussion

1. At what pH (range) would a solution be considered As an acid? As a base?

- The range goes from 0 - 14, with 7 being neutral. pHs of less than 7 indicate acidity, whereas
a pH of greater than 7 indicates a base.
2. Based on the pH values, which among the water samples and other sample
solutionsis/are acidic or basic?
- The acids are Vinegar, Calamansi and the basic are the bleach and not distilled
water which is Water 1 & 2.
3. How will you relate the potential of hydrogen to the different water sources?
- The power of hydrogen (pH) level can measure how basic or acidic water is. It is essential in
determining the pH level of the water as it can cause harm to the body. The pH level of pure
water is 7.0, which is considered neutral on the scale.

Solve for the pH of the following samples and predict their acidity/basicity:
1. Blood plasma, [H+]= 3.98x 10-8M

Base

2. Human urine,[H+] =6.31 x 10-7M

Acid

3. House hold ammonia,[H ]=3.16x10-12M +

Base

4. Gastric juice,[H+]= 1.58x10-2M

Acid

Conclusions

Based on the findings in this experiment, it can be concluded that we can determined the pH
level of a solution by adding an indicator, it also tell us which solution is basic, acidic or
neutral.
