Systems of Linear Equation in Two Variables

The lesson plan is about teaching systems of linear equations in two variables to 8th grade mathematics students. The objectives are for students to be able to illustrate and graph systems of linear equations. As a motivation, the teacher presents a word problem about a girl saving coins in piggy banks. They develop a system of linear equations to represent the girl's savings. The lesson will discuss what a system of linear equations is using examples. It will also explain the three possibilities for the graphs of systems of linear equations: intersecting lines with a unique solution, parallel lines with no solution, and coinciding lines with infinitely many solutions.

A. Preliminary Activities

May I request everyone to stand for a prayer, ____ will you please led the prayer? The students stand for the
prayer. Then, ___ led the
prayer.

Good morning, class! Good morning, teacher

Hannah.

How are you today? We’re fine teacher.

It is great to hear that you are all fine. And now, let’s check your attendance first.
Who is absent today? None teacher.

Very good, students. Keep it up!

Let’s have first our agreements.

What will you do if the teacher is talking here in front? Listen attentively.

What will you do if you want to answer? Raise your hand if you
Exactly! What else? want to answer.
Very good! Do not answer in chorus.
Who can recall our lesson last meeting? Our lesson last meeting
was all about “Finding
The Equation of the Line”.

What are the three ways in determining the equation of the line? The three ways in
determining the equation
of the line are the two
points, the point- slope and
the slope – intercept.

If the graph of a linear equation passes through the points (x 1, y1) and (x2, y2). What
It is a two – point form
is the equation in finding the equation of the line?
with the equation of y – y 1
= y2 – y1/x2-x1 (x – x1).

Exactly! If the graph of a linear equation as a slope ma and y – intercept b, then use
Slope – intercept form.
the equation y=mx + b. This form is called what?

If the graph is of a linear equation has a slope m and passes through the point (x 1,
y1), then use the equation y –y1 = m (x-x1). It is called? Point – slope form.

Correct!

B. Motivation (answers may vary)

Do you have make it a habit to save money?

Do you have your own piggy banks or “alkansya” at home? (answer may vary)
The simplest way to save money is to collect your change or coins and keep them in
a coin bank or your “alkansya”. Start with an easy and achievable goal that
gradually increase your targets as you adjust your daily or weekly budget. Also,
make sure that you will not spend them unless it is needed or for emergencies. Let’s
try answer this problem.

Lea is starting saving one peso and five peso coins in her piggy
banks. And she know that she have put 10 coins with a total amount of P22.
What is the mathematical model that best represent of Lea’s savings?

So, let us say that Lea start saving one peso and five peso coins in your piggy
banks. You know that Lea have 10 coins with a total amount of P22. Now, let us
use what we learned to create mathematical model to represent Lea’s savings. To
write a mathematical model in which we do not know the number of each coin yet,
we can use variables x and y.
Let x = the no. of one peso coins ( in the piggy banks)
Let y = the no. of five peso coins (in the piggy banks)
There are 10 coins: x + y = 10
Total amount: x + 5y = 22

But how can we write the second statements? The total number of peso coin can be
represented by (1)(x) “be the number of one peso coins” = x. While the total
number of five peso coin can be written as (5) (y) “be the number of five peso
coins” = 5y and there sum is P22. Hence, the second equation is 1x or just x plus 5y
= 22. Again, the mathematical model of our savings is given by two equations:
x + y = 10
x + 5y = 22.
A set of two or more linear equations in two variables is called a system of linear
equations.

C. Presentation

Based on the activity, our lesson this morning is all about “Systems of Linear

D. Discussion two variables.
(M8AL – Ih-
2)
A system of linear equations is a set of two or more equations of the same
variables in each equation. For examples:
1. x + y = 4 and x –y = 2
2. 3x + y = 4 and 3x + y = 10
3. x – y = 5 and 2x – 2y = 10.

Recall that every point on the graph of an equation is a solution. However, a

solution to a system of linear equations in two variables is a set of numbers that,
when we substitute them for specified variables in the system, makes each equation
in the system a true statement. The lines of each equation in the systems of
equations in two variables do not always intersect at exactly one point, hence, it
does not always have a unique solution. In fact, there are three possibilities as
shown in the figures below:

Figure 1. A system of linear equations whose graphs are intersecting lines

{xx−+ y=4
y=2
Notice that:
 The lines x + y = 4
and x – y = 2 have
different slopes
 The graphs intersect
at only one point,
hence, the system has
only one solution
 The graphs intersect
at (3, 1)so the
solution of the
system is (3, 1)

Figure 2. A system of linear equations whose graphs are parallel lines

{33xx++yy=4
=10

Notice that:
 3x + y = 4 and 3x + y
= 10 the same slopes
but differently y –
intercepts.
 The graphs do not
intersect, so the
system has no
solution.

Figure 3. A system of linear equations whose graphs are coinciding

{2 x−2
x− y=5
y=10

Notice that:
 x – y = 5
and 2x –
2y = 10
can both
be written
as y = x -
5
 the lines
have the
same
slopes and
the same
y –
intercepts
 the graphs
are coinciding or are the same lines, hence, the system has infinitely
many solutions.

Generally, there are three types of systems of linear equations in two variables
according to the number of solutions. Here are the three types of system of linear
equations as shown in the table below.
