BSBA 1A Readings in Philippine History

Read the questions carefully and give what is asked. Write your answer on the spaces provided.

1. Define “History” based from the various perspectives given by historians.

History has been around the moment humans began to write on basically anything that can
leave impressions and lines on surfaces. Historians said history is written and told by the historian.
Historians tell their story from their own experience, or they re-enact the story of the things they studied
for other people to understand. History’s common definition now is history means “past of mankind”.
Reconstruction of the total past is unattainable for the reason that not every moment, everything that
was said and everything that you saw will your mind be able to recall because not everything will make
an impression to you while the event is happening thus make it unattainable.

2. Why is the Filipino term for history “Kasaysayan”?

“Kasaysayan,” according to history in the Filipino language and perspective, came from the root
word “saysay,” which means narrative, relevance, and importance. According to Zeus Salazar “ang
kasaysayan ay isang salaysay na may saysay para sa sinasalaysayang grupo ng tao.” “Kasaysayan” is
therefore, a “salasay na may saysay” or a meaningful narrative.

3. Explain how there are so little usable materials left to historians to use.

Generally there are two types of historical sources, primary and secondary sources. Primary
sources are materials from the people who witnessed and are involved in that event or topic that is
being studied, which is the most reliable source. Secondary sources however is not directly from the
people who witnessed the event but from the people who analyzed the primary resources, this is why it
is not very reliable for the reason that the person who wrote it was not on the event being studied. This
is the reason historians usually rely on primary sources for its reliability. The downfall however is the fact
that there have been so many studies conducted by different historians who used the available historical
sources thereby leaving no room for others. Artifacts, weapons etc. are being seized by the government
which leads to scarcity of materials to use by historians.
