The document discusses the impacts of colonization, statements from Captain John Smith that showed exaggeration, statements that proved the concept of orientalism, and how commercialism affects the worth of a story. Colonization can cause oppression, economic changes, and land issues for the colonized country but also introduce benefits. Captain John Smith exaggerated by referring to Indians as savages from the east. His statements about Indians being savage, uncivilized, and a consultation being held in a barbarous manner showed the concept of orientalism. Commercialism can compromise a story for marketing purposes but increase interest, though it questions the accuracy and value of the information.

Read carefully what is asked in each statement. Then, write your answer briefly but comprehensively.

1. Explain two impacts of colonization on the colonized country in general.

• The colonizing country's oppression to the one being colonized brings about destruction
to the social, indigenous living, and the economy because the colonization will apply new
governance, and a unique way of living must be adopted. Economic structures changes,
land displacement, and land degradation will occur for the satisfaction of the superior or
the colonizing country. Exploitation and repression will also have to be seen due to the
authority from power and superiority. Colonization makes the independent nation
unprepared to function in the modern global nation-state system and vulnerable to
outside influence and pressure. Medicine, education, improved infrastructure,
Christianity, and boundaries are some of the benefits of colonization to the colonized
country. Moreover, colonization ruptured many ecosystems as one country can potentially
bring in new organisms while eliminating those existing inside the colonized country. This
can result to diseases to be brought inside the colonized country which can potentially
affect the colonized country’s population.

2. Based on the account of Capt. John Smith, cite statement/s that you believe
showed an exaggeration of the event/s that transpired.
• Captain John Smith referred to Indians as "savages, devil, grim, ugly-uncivilized people"
because they are from the east, which is being applied by orientalism where the western
is strong and superior and eastern are weak and inferior. That statement from Captain
John Smith is an exaggeration because superiority cannot be decided by the direction we
live in or our settlements or origin. It shows how shallow Captain John Smith reduced the
Indians into something that is based on his assumptions alone. In terms of governance
and discipline, the Indians showed excellence based on the journal of Capt. John Smith.
Another statement that showed exaggeration is where John Smith became a slave in
1602 and killed his master to regain his freedom.
3. Enumerate three statements of Capt. Smith which prove that the concept of
'Orientalism' was evident in his account.
• Capt. John Smith referred to the Indians as savage, devil, grim, ugly—uncivilized people.
• "Romantic as it may seem, the movie has covered the bitter facts about colonialism –
that the Indians were treated as inferior to the Englishmen and that the English language
was somehow forced to them as it was seen superior over the native language of the
Indians."
• "Having feasted him after their best barbarous manner they could, a long consultation
was held."
• The statement that proved Capt. John Smith proved the concept of orientalism is when
he referred to the Indians as savage, devil, grim, ugly—uncivilized people.

4. Discuss how the practice of 'Commercialism' affects the worth of a story whether
it is written or filmed.
• Commercialism affects the worth of the story in a marketing way. Some parts or aspects
are questionable, sometimes wrong or compromised but still piqued the people's
interests. The original story written or filmed may contain some unbearable, foul, dull, or
be sold to the people that some parts of the story are manipulated in the journal of Capt.
John Smith was attacked by 300 bowmen, which it is questioned as how sure is he that
there were 300 bowmen, but no one can confirm as he was the only survivor. The point
is, the worth of the story with the practice of Commercialism raises some questions and
is exaggerative but still selling and exciting for people. Commercialism affects the value
of a story by tweaking some of the facts to make it more appealing to the
readers/viewers. It loses some of the accurate information that the story has. On a
negative note, commercialism tends to exaggerate a scenario to the point where it brings
confusion to its viewers or readers and tend to bring in a more unrealistic approach of
what is being said and done in one story. Commercialism can either be used to pique
interest or convince the people to believe something that is in the movie is not just merely
imaginary but something that can happen in real life.
