Flip Flop Conversion Part 2

This document describes the steps to convert a JK flip-flop to other flip-flop types including SR, D, and T. The steps are: 1) Draw the truth table of the required flip-flop, 2) Use the JK flip-flop excitation table to determine J and K inputs for each output transition, 3) Use a K-map to find expressions for J and K in terms of the required flip-flop inputs and the current state, 4) Draw the logic circuit. As examples, the conversions are: JK to SR - J=S, K=R; JK to D - J=D, K=D'; JK to T - J=K=T.

Flip-Flop Conversion

(JK to SR, JK to D and JK to T Flip-Flop Conversion)

Steps for Flip-Flop Conversion:

The following are the steps for the flip-flop conversion.

Using these steps, let’s convert the JK flip-flop in SR, D and T flip-flop.
JK to SR Flip-Flop Conversion:

Step-1: Draw the truth table of SR Flip-Flop (Required Flip-Flop)

Step-2 : Using the excitation table of the JK flip-flop (existing flip-flop), find the required J and K
inputs for each output transition of SR Flip-Flop.

Using the excitation table of the JK Flip-Flop, the following are the J and K inputs for each
output transition.
Step- 3 Using the K-map, find the expression of J and K in terms of S, R and Qn.

From the above table, we can find the expression of J in terms of S, R and Qn. The J is logic ‘1’ for
the input combinations 1 0 0 (minterm m4) . And five input combinations m1 (0 0 1), m3 ( 0 1 1),
m5 ( 1 0 1), m6 ( 1 1 0) and m7 ( 1 1 1) are don’t care terms. Write these minterms in K-map, and
find the simplified expression of J.
Similarly, let’s find the expression of K, in terms of S, R and Qn.

K is logic ‘1’ for the input combinations, 0 1 1 (m3). Five input combinations 0 0 0 (m0), 0 1 0 (m2),
1 0 0 (m4), 1 1 0 (m6) and 1 1 1 (m7) are don’t care terms. Write these minterms in K-map, and
find the simplified expression of K.
In this way, the expression of J = S and expression of K = R
Step-4 Draw the logic circuit

JK to D Flip-Flop Conversion:
Step-1 Draw the truth table of D Flip-Flop (Required Flip-Flop)

Step- 2 Using the excitation table of the JK flip-flop (existing flip-flop), find the required J and K
inputs for each output transition of D Flip-Flop.
Using the excitation table of the JK Flip-Flop, the following are the J and K inputs for each
output transition.

Step- 3 Using the K-map, find the expression of J and K in terms of D and Qn.

J is logic ‘1’ for input combination 1 0 (m2), while input combination 0 1 (m1) and 1 1 (m3) are
don’t care terms. Write these minterms in K-map, and find the simplified expression of J.
K is logic ‘1’ for input combination 0 1 (m1), while input combination 0 0 (m0) and 1 0 (m2) are
don’t care terms. Write these minterms in K-map, and find the simplified expression of K.

So, in this way, for JK to D flip-flop conversion, J = D and K = D’.

Step-4 Draw the Logic Circuit

JK to T Flip-Flop Conversion:
Step-1 Draw the truth table of T Flip-Flop (Required Flip-Flop)

Step- 2 Using the excitation table of the JK flip-flop (existing flip-flop), find the required J and K
inputs for each output transition of T Flip-Flop.

Using the excitation table of the JK Flip-Flop, the following are the J and K inputs for each
output transition.
Step- 3 Using the K-map, find the expression of J and K in terms of T and Qn.

J is logic ‘1’ for input combination 1 0 (m2), while input combinations 0 1 (m1) and 1 1 (m3) are
don’t care terms. Write these minterms in K-map, and find the simplified expression of J.
K is logic ‘1’ for input combination 1 1 (m3), while input combinations 0 0 (m0) and 1 0 (m2) are
don’t care terms. Write these minterms in K-map, and find the simplified expression of K.

So, in this way, for JK to T flip-flop conversion, J = K = T

Step-4 Draw the Logic Circuit
