CHAPTER 2
PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The YourVIEW display called "Weather 1 Display" is a

graphical user interface software for Vaisala's automatic
data collection system MAWS. It offers a graphical
presentation of real-time and logged data and allows you to
log data into your PC's hard disk. Several modified displays
are available. Also, the user can configure the layout and the
language of the real-time display.
The basic version of MAWS YourVIEW is included free-
of-charge in the MAWS delivery.

The network version of MAWS YourVIEW can be

purchased separately. The network version includes
additional TCP/IP server that transmits data to the
TCPSLAVE modules installed in the PC network. The user
can purchase a required number of these "slave display"
licenses or unlimited license allowing the free use of the
slave displays in the same PC network. For more details, see
Chapter 7 Networking with TCP/IP on page 41.

YourVIEW consists of three modules that run

simultaneously on your PC:

1. In the Receiver module you define the communication

settings for receiving data from a data collecting
system via your PC's serial port. Also the data logging
details are specified here.

VAISALA___________________________________________________________9
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

2. The Weather Display module is used for real-time

monitoring of measured and calculated data.
3. The Browser module allows you to study the logged
history data in more detail, both graphically and in
table format.

YourVIEW operation is password-protected. This means

that unauthorized personnel are prevented from making
changes to the settings or from closing down the program.

Chapter 3 ________________________________________Installation and Start-up

CHAPTER 3
INSTALLATION AND START-UP

System Requirements
The YourVIEW software will run on any IBM compatible
PC with minimum Pentium/100 MHz microprocessor and
Windows NT or Windows 95 operating system. Minimum
of 16 MB RAM is required (32 MB is strongly
recommended). YourVIEW typically requires
approximately 20 MB free hard disk space and additional
space for data logging. The PC also needs to have an SVGA
display, CD-ROM drive, and a mouse.

Software Installation
These instructions cover the essentials of installing the
YourVIEW software. It is assumed that the user of
YourVIEW knows how to use software that runs on the
Windows operating system.

The YourVIEW software is delivered on a CD-ROM. The

software selects automatically the current VGA or SVGA
screen resolution. The minimum display resolution
requirement is at least 800 by 600 pixels.
Before starting the setup program, make sure you have at
least 20 MB free space on your hard disk.

VAISALA__________________________________________________________11
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

To install the software on your hard disk, choose Start/Run/

D:\SETUP.exe (where D: is your CD drive's letter) in the
YourVIEW directory. The Setup program guides you
through the installation.

0010-081

Figure 1 YourVIEW Installation

When the Setup program asks for the installation directory,
you can accept the default by clicking the Finish button. In
case you want to change the default directory, click the
Change button and type the new path. It is recommended to
install the software in its own directory.
The setup program generates an executable file called
YOURVIEW.exe and the associated files into the directory
you selected for the YourVIEW path. The default directory
is YourVIEW.

NOTE The installation program also creates an Uninstall icon that

is intended to be used for deleting YourVIEW from the PC,
or for removing an old version before installing the updated
software.

After the installation of the basic set is complete it is

necessary to install a specific real-time Display module by
running the Setup.exe installation program from one of the

12 _____________________________________________________ M010069en-B
Chapter 3 ________________________________________Installation and Start-up

ready-made setup files from the CD-ROM. The standard

MAWS CD-ROM, QCD101, contains five ready-made real-
time display configurations, named maws1...maws5, in the
folder Yourview\configs. The MAWS YourVIEW TCP/IP
CD-ROM contains only one ready-made real-time display
configuration for the master display in the folder
Yourview\master and one for the slave displays in the folder
Yourview\slave. When the Display installation is finished,
the program group includes also an uninstall icon for the
Display module.
The above mentioned files are for example only. For your
application you may need to modify the configuration files,
e.g., logging, contents of display, or contents of data
messages, etc. The general instructions of how to change
receiver module configuration settings are explained in
section Changing Receiver Configuration on page 20.
Changing display configuration settings is explained in
section Changing Display Configuration on page 38.
After installation is completed remove the CD-ROM from
the drive. Store the CD-ROM in a safe place, and/or take a
back-up copy.

Computer Settings
For the YourVIEW software to run properly, you may need
to change your computer's general Windows settings. Go to
Start - Settings - Control panel - Regional Settings for
specifying the settings:

- Date format yy-MM-dd

- Time format HH:mm:ss
- Decimal delimiter (decimal symbol) should be defined to
be point (.).

With these settings, the LabVIEW function that converts

String to Number will work properly when parsing the
received data messages.

VAISALA__________________________________________________________13
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

NOTE It is recommended that you do not use a screen saver.

Hardware Installation
YourVIEW uses the standard serial ports of your PC for
communications. The default port is COM1. The default
line settings are 9600, 8, 1, N. Refer to the related manuals
for instructions on how to connect the maintenance terminal
cable between the device and your computer.

Starting Software
To start YourVIEW in Windows 95 or NT:

1. Click the Start button on the taskbar.

2. Select Programs - YourVIEW - YourVIEW.exe.

When starting the YourVIEW for the first time, the software
registration window opens, see Figure 2 on page 15.
Click on the Name field and fill in the user and company
names. The serial number is filled in already (Weather 1).
After filling in this information, click the OK button.

If the serial number field is left blank or it is not correctly

filled in, only the Receiver module will start. In this case,
stop and close the Receiver module. Start YourVIEW again
and fill in the correct serial number, as shown in Figure 2 on
page 15.

blank. We recommend that you change the password to

prevent accidental or unauthorized changes or closing of the
Receiver module.

Three windows will open on the screen of your PC.

Normally, the Weather Display window is on top.
The Weather Display window allows you to monitor the
measured and calculated values that MAWS is sending.
Data update rate depends on your configuration in MAWS.
Typically, e.g. the data is updated once in a minute except
for the wind data, which is updated every 1 seconds.
In case the data is not updated on the screen, see that your
PC's COM port is free for receiving messages from MAWS
and that the MAWS command mode is closed.
If a sensor is not connected or data is unavailable, the data
collection device may be sending (depends on its
configuration) any non-numeric value between the
delimiters, e.g. ///// or even nothing at all (which would be
received as 2 consecutive delimiters). In these cases, the
numeric displays will change to NaN (Not-a-Number) and
there will be gaps in the corresponding graph. In the
Browser, the corresponding table cell contains the same
string value that was received in the message, for example
///// or even nothing at all.

CHAPTER 4
RECEIVER

This chapter describes the program module that receives

data from MAWS and transmits the data to the real-time
Display module.
The YourVIEW Receiver starts automatically at each start-
up. In case it has been stopped, restart the program by
clicking the button at the left top corner of the display.

9909-040

Figure 6 Receiver Window

VAISALA__________________________________________________________19
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

The Receiver module must be running (the running

indicator is visible as in Figure 6 on page 19) all the
time, so that both the updating of data from the data
collection system to the display and data storage to the hard
disk are possible. In this module, you also define the
logging rules and configure network options (exporting data
via DDE). Different Receiver configurations can be stored
into the library.

Changing Receiver Configuration

The settings for the Receiver module are saved in a file
called receiver.cfg.

NOTE The old file gets overwritten when changes are saved, so
you should make a copy of the original file for backup
purposes.

Any changes to YourVIEW Receiver configuration should

be made while the Receiver is "running". However, the
changes do not take effect until you stop the Receiver and
then restart it.

When you want to edit the Receiver settings, click on the

field to be changed. YourVIEW now adds a button to the
tool bar. When you have modified any field, you need to
confirm the change by clicking the button or by pressing
ENTER. The modification(s) will be ignored until you have
clicked the button or pressed ENTER.
When you start the YourVIEW software for the first time,
we recommend that you stop the Receiver by clicking the
Stop button and go through the following checklist
(especially if you want to change the default settings):

20 _____________________________________________________ M010069en-B
Chapter 4 ___________________________________________________ Receiver

1. Check the communication port parameters. Make sure

that the communications parameters set for the data
collection system correspond to the ones set in
YourVIEW Receiver. The default parameters for
MAWS are 9600, 8, 1, N.
2. Set the data item names and units to correspond the
received data messages.

NOTE The data item names and units that correspond the received
data messages will be used as a header in your log file.

3. Check the start and stop characters.

4. Set the timeout a little bit longer than the data message
transmission interval in MAWS.
5. Define the logging parameters if you want the data to
be logged on the hard disk of your PC. See section
Logging on page 27.

Message Formats
This section explains the message formats that the
YourVIEW consumes. You can configure your own
messages to suit your application, sensor set and
display/data logging requirements.

YourVIEW expects two messages: one (PTU) including

temperature, pressure, humidity and precipitation data and
(WIND) including wind speed and direction. PTU message
interval is 1 minute and WIND interval is 1 second.

The message formatting must include Start of Heading, End

of Heading and End of Text characters, and the data must be
separated by tabulator.

General syntax is:

<SOH>title<STX>\t<variable_1>\t...\t<variable_n>
\t<ETX><CR><LF>

VAISALA__________________________________________________________21
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

The explanations for the syntax are presented in Table 3

below for the Yourview1 and in Table 4 below for the
Yourview2.

The MAWS setup must include two reports with names

Yourview1 (including wind data) and Yourview2 (including
rest of the data). Similar reports are available in the Basic_1
and DEMO setups, which are included in the MAWS
delivery or in any customer specific setup. Sending of these
reports has to be activated with MAWS Lizard Setup
Software. Refer to User's Guide of MAWS Lizard Setup
Software for details on how to activate the report sending.

You can also make MAWS send new reports for

YourVIEW by creating a new setup with the MAWS

22 _____________________________________________________ M010069en-B
Chapter 4 ___________________________________________________ Receiver

Lizard. The MAWS CD contains five example setups

(DEMO1 ... DEMO5) which correspond to the YourVIEW
display configurations named similarly.

For further details how to setup an output report, see the

User’s Guide of MAWS Lizard Setup Software.

Polling Rules
The YourVIEW program can be set to poll the data
collection device for the data instead of automatically
receiving it.
The available polling commands in the MAWS are: 000,
111, 222,…and 999.

Polling rules define the Polling string transmitted by the

YourVIEW to the data collection device. Transmission
interval as well as the Reply waiting time must be defined.
Both times are given in seconds with 0.1-second resolution.

Receiving Rules
When you have installed the Weather Display, the settings
already include default receiving rules.
There can be several rules for data messages incoming from
the data collection equipment. The Receiver can receive
more than one type of data message and at different
intervals. By changing the receive rule number, you can
define multiple report definitions coming in on a single
serial port. For Weather Display there are two receiving
rules: rule number 0 for PTU message and rule number 1 for
WIND message. For description of received data messages,
see Table 5 on page 24.

VAISALA__________________________________________________________23
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

logging parameters, see Figure 10 below and Table 7 on

page 29.

The data is stored on your PC, in the files of the directory

specified in the logging folder. The preferred file extension
is specified in the extension field. The default is CSV. The
file names are created according to the date and time when
logging is started, e.g., 96110614.CSV - a log file started
after 2 p.m.

NOTE A new file will be started each time when YourVIEW is

restarted.

Data will be logged as Comma Separated Values (CSV)

ASCII characters. Other application software such as
Microsoft Excel can directly read the files. The header of
each file specifies the names and units of all the parameters
in the file. When opening a log file into Microsoft Excel,
each value will be inserted in its own cell.

logged file can be set in the "file duration"
field. The default value is 24 hours. Setting
1 creates a new file every hour.
NOTE: If the logging interval is set very
short, e.g., 1 min, it is recommended to
have also a short file duration, e.g., 1 hour
or 1 day at maximum.
Autodel Forces files older than the specified value
(in hours) to be automatically deleted. If
autodel is set to zero (0) there is no auto
deleting at all. The default value is 0. When
autodel is set = 0, the user should monitor
the availability of the hard disk space for log
files.
Folder Used to define the target folder or a relative
path inside the log file directory where the
logged files will be stored. The folder name
must be unique for each receiving rule. If
the Folder is empty, then log files will be
stored directly in Logfile path.
Logfile path Defines the directory in which the logged
data folders and/or files are located. Default
logfile path is C:\YOURVIEW. If Logfile
path is empty, then log files will be stored in
the LabVIEW Default Directory.

Figure 12 YourVIEW Weather 1 Display

The program module is started by clicking the button at

the top left corner of the display.

The Display is a real-time data display with graphs, numeric

data boxes, a WAD21 look-a-like wind display with
selectable data averaging periods and with minimum and
maximum values. The wind display also includes a very

VAISALA__________________________________________________________37
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

intuitive presentation of variation in the wind direction

during the selectable periods.

The date and time on the Weather 1 Display corresponds the

time set on your computer.
The display includes fields for air temperature, humidity,
dew point temperature, pressure, solar, precipitation sum,
etc. The contents of the data field depend on the
configuration of the reports sent by MAWS. The text field
titles are editable.

A history window plots the previously received values for

the selected sensor (default: temperature). The real-time
graphs have a capacity of 360 values. Plot Rate setting from
1 to 120 seconds extends these graphs from 5 min. up to the
latest 10 hours.
The value (y) scale of the graphs is either auto scaling or
manual. To change the value range manually, double-click
or highlight the upper or lower range with your mouse, type
in the new limit, and press ENTER. Manual scaling can be
switched OFF by clicking the right-hand button of the
mouse and selecting Auto-scaling ON (ü).

Changing Display Configuration

If your system is similar to one of the DEMO (DEMO1...5)
systems included on the MAWS CD-ROM, you can
substitute the default file with the appropriate DEMO
display setup. Otherwise, you should follow the instructions
below.
Any changes to YourVIEW Display configuration should be
made while the Display module is "running". However, the
changes do not take effect until you stop the Display and
then restart it. The settings are saved in a file called
mawsdisp.cfg.

The Wind AVG field lets you define the interval for wind
direction and wind speed averaging. 1 minute, 2 minute or
10 minute averages or, alternatively, instantaneous values
can be selected. The wind display (top right corner) shows
averaged numerical values at the selected interval. The wind
direction display in the circle shows the average value
(orange color) as well as the variation of wind direction
during the selected period (yellow color).
The Plot Rate field lets you choose the plotting interval in
the all history windows by specifying the rate at which the
measured data are plotted on the graphs. Valid choices are:
greater than or equal to 1 (corresponding to total plotting
range of 5 minutes) and up to every 120 seconds (10 hours).

Chapter 7 ________________________________________Networking with TCP/IP

CHAPTER 7
NETWORKING WITH TCP/IP

This chapter provides information for MAWS YourVIEW

used in the PC network using TCP/IP protocol for data
transfer.

MAWS YourVIEW with TCP/IP

This version of the MAWS YourVIEW is for the PC
network using TCP/IP protocol for data transfer. TCP/IP is a
means for networked computers to communicate with each
other. MAWS YourVIEW with TCP/IP includes the
Receiver, Browser, the real-time Display module, and the
TCP Server module that must be running. In addition, it is a
server for the "slave" real-time displays (TCPSLAVE)
running in other PCs in the network. TCPSLAVE also
includes the Browser module for viewing the history files
logged onto the network hard disk.

The message format that YourVIEW consumes is the same

as with the basic MAWS YourVIEW, see section Message
Formats on page 21.

The TCPSLAVE display can be installed either in selected

PC’s (in case of limited number of software licenses) or in
the network server, when the unlimited license has been
purchased.

VAISALA__________________________________________________________41
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

The TCP Server module YourVIEW TCP Server.vi shows

the IP address and port number of the Server PC, see Figure
14 below.

0010-086

Figure 14 YourVIEW TCP Server.vi

The appropriate IP address and port number need to be
configured to all client machines running YourVIEW
TCP/IP Slave Display. If in the address field reads 0.0.0.0,
you need to ask your network administrator for an explicit
IP address.

TCPSLAVE Installed in PC
Follow the standard installation procedure running the
Setup.exe as described in section Software Installation on
page 11. In the TCPSLAVE, you must set the TCP/IP
address and TCP/IP port number of the server PC, see
Figure 15 on page 43. Any changes to the configurations
have to be made when all the YourVIEW modules are
stopped. Wait patiently while the Stopping soon text is
displayed. Follow the general instructions on how to change
configuration settings. For more information, see section
Changing Receiver Configuration on page 20.

TCPSLAVE Installed in Server PC

When you have purchased the unlimited software license,
then it is recommended that you also install the TCPSLAVE
in the same PC as the master MAWS YourVIEW is
installed. Follow the standard installation procedure running
the Setup.exe as described in section Software Installation
on page 11.

NOTE You have a different directory for this installation.

After installations, the users in the PC network can start the

TCPSLAVE directly from the server PC.

VAISALA__________________________________________________________43
User's Guide ________________________________________________________

In the TCPSLAVE, you must set the TCP/IP address of the

server PC. Any changes to the configurations have to be
made when all the YourVIEW modules are stopped. Wait
patiently while the Stopping soon text is displayed.

Modifying Real-time Display

If needed, the real-time display can be modified to the same
format as the master (server) display by following the
general instructions of how to change display configuration
settings, see section Changing Display Configuration on
page 38.
