Chapter I: The Problem & It’s Background

Comprising of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines lies at the far eastern

edge of Asia. Flaunting the world's longest coastline, it packs in an abundance of

superb seashores, segregated tidal ponds and watersports. Its megacities are

flooding with culture, home to galleries, recorded milestones, and a gigantic cluster

of shopping centers. This dazzling archipelago is a nature-sweetheart's heaven,

home to beautiful seashores, for example, Boracay and El Nido, and the coral reefs

of the Tubbataha Reefs National Park. Excellent traveling spots can be found

among the numerous mountain ranges, for example, Mount Pulag and Mount

Kanlaon, with uncommon natural life, for example, Philippine hawks and water

wild oxen found during the vegetation. You will experience the primary tourist

spots of Fort Santiago and Manila Cathedral inside this deep-rooted locale. The

most well-known convenience choices are inns and condos, with numerous a short,

Innovative Technology can allude to something new for example, an

innovation, or the act of creating and presenting new thing. An Innovation is

regularly a new product of technology, yet it can likewise be another method of

accomplishing something or even another perspective. The result is often good

when ideas are applied by the organization to additionally fulfill the requirements

and desires for the clients. This is one of the reasons why hospitality management

in the Philippines is barely catching up to other countries, because they lack

innovative technology ideas and products. There are many good ideas to create a

new technology that can help to promote your business, but yet others failed to do

this because they are afraid to take the risk that can affect their business. Which

makes this research to be a reliable idea so that hospitality industry in the

Philippines can be well known around the world.

This study aims to create a proposed idea that can help hospitality industry

in the Philippines to upgrade its technology to a better version and to increase the

new technology product that can help promote business.

Conceptual Framework

The concept of innovation is so broad that it has been studied in a number of

academic realms, from management and the behavioral sciences including

sociology, psychology, and anthropology to economics and also to politics.

Innovation is defined differently by scholars, but it is largely defined as offering a

new change to the organization which adopts it in the form of a product,

technology, or program or another vehicle. According to Gopalakrishnan &

Damanpur, they explain that innovation is one of the means by which a new

change can be accepted according to creation and changes.

Demand pull, technology push, and customer heterogeneity. The emergence

of the demandpull innovation research stream does not mean that traditional,

technology-based innovation research treats the role of customers–users as

secondary or trivial. Instead, the key difference between the two research streams

is that technology-based innovation research tends to assume that customers’ needs

are certain and that an innovation’s value creation is a given. In this sense, the role

of innovation is to reduce production costs or to increase efficiency in satisfying a

given customer’s needs, consistent with the RBV’s basic assumption of “two

business firms competing in a production market, one of which has a competitive

advantage over the other” (Peteraf & Barney, 2003: 315, emphasis added).

Technology as defined by dictionary is the application of scientific

knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Technological innovation

on the other hand is comprises of new products and processes and significant

technological changes of products and processes, wherein innovation has been

implemented if it has been introduced on the market.

According to the Technovation and Journal of Small BusinessManagement,

it is only normal for small businesses to go through of series of transitions or

shocks that can lead to a rapid increase in growth and in value or a sudden and

sharp decline. Whether the change involves information communication

technology (IMT), such as e-commerce or materials requirement planning (MRP)

or something traditional physical nature, it still requires the introduction of new

technology to make both the business and technology mutually adapted to each

other. And if these two successfully adapted to each other, the business

profitability and survivability will quickly increase.

According to Tornikoski, Rannikko, and Heimonen (2017), they found out

that the technological distinctiveness of the firms coupled with managerial

tolerance of uncertainty led to competitive advantages in firm. This signifies the

need for a combination of technological competencies and managerial capabilities

for managers in smaller businesses to succeed in technologically intensive

environment.

As access to mobile broadband becomes widespread and less expensive, it is

potential as an enabler for the creation and development of small business

increases. This is according to Alderete (2017, on the same issue), he also added

that the development of mobile telephony infrastructure has a good impact not only

to consumer choice, but also in economic development. He used the mobile

telephony as an example of an enabling technology that can either be used as a

basis for a creation of a new business or for the development and expansion of an

existing business.

Innovation is the key to improve technological strategy in a business,

together with technology both can help to upgrade the services provided by the

business owners in different field. Technology innovative keep the businesses on

track with changing demands and needs of its customer. The researchers

understand that the importance of applying technological advances will increase

profit and will keep the sustainability of a business.

Relating it to the current business situation of hotels and restaurant in

Olongapo City, the advancement of technology improves and will continue to meet

the needs of the customers dinning in around the area. Consisting of wide variation

of hotel and restaurant services, technological changes are a necessity to cope up

with the needs of every customer.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to describe the research problem in terms of Location,

Strength, Weakness, and effectiveness of Innovative Technology.

Basic Assumption

This research will help businesses like restaurants and hotels to improve

their marketing strategy and technologies inside their respective places by adding

new innovative technology that can increase their profit and attract more customers

to come to their business. It gives emphasis that running a business needs a lot of

changes from time to time for it to keep up from its other competitors and to be

always be in talk of trends.

Scope and Delimitation

The researchers limit the study on identifying new ideas on how to

improve the business industry in Olongapo City through technology and

innovation. The main focus of the study is to create a list of new innovative ideas

that will help business owners to improve their customer service, and to give

emphasis on the significant of innovative technology in running a business and

how it will increase profit and business sustainability.

Improving business requires an upgrade from the product and services

offered, this will happen successfully through the help of innovation and

technology, from basic security features to how people will remember their

product and services.

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

1. Business Owners- Their business will be known on other places that will
help them increase their profit.

2. Workers- They will have an easy job on promoting their business products
and other things that they want to show on their customers.

3. Customers- They can have an easy way to communicate to the hotels and

4. Future researchers- They will have a background, and this will serve as their
guide and basis.

Chapter 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers made use of the descriptive method of research in

identifying the different techniques and principles that will apply in the study. The

descriptive research is a quantitative research method that attempts to collect

quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis of the population sample.

(Bhat, A., 2019, Descriptive research: definition, characteristics, methods,

examples, and advantages). A descriptive research is a scientific method which

involves observing and describing the behavior of a subject without influencing it

in any way. It is also defined as a valid method for researching specific subjects

and as a precursor to more quantitative studies. The descriptive model of research

helps the researchers to generate to knowledge from existing theories and

principles from analyzing and observing the phenomena in real life situations to

produce a lifelong solution.

The researchers critically collect data in a form of case study to evaluate

information that will be generated into useful facts. A descriptive style of showing

data collected will help the researchers to explain the importance of

technologically innovative to Olongapo City’s growing industry in hotel and

restaurant. With the great locale of Olongapo City, facts show that it is a good

place for hospitality industry because of the various beaches that surrounding it,

which is good for beach adventures and stay in vacations.

Research Instrument

The researchers made an inquiry through direct call and emails to the Hotels

and Restaurants that they choose as a subject, they simply inquire about the basic

commodities that they are offering and asked the price range of every services.

They also know how to process these services without being physically present in

the location. They observe how the front desk officers deliver the services they are

offering in a limited source of communication. With the help of social media, the

researcher successfully done the inquiry and short interview, they also conduct

interview to the 10 close friends of them about the services that they are looking

from a hotel and restaurant, they enumerate it and used as a basis for the ideas on

how to improve business through innovative technology.

The researcher’s information gathered was evaluated and used as facts that

will supplement to the study.

Locale of the Study

The study was conducted at Olongapo City, a highly urbanized city in the

province of Zambales. Known as a province that has a wide variation of superb

beach destinations. Olongapo City is also a destination for some tourist who enjoy

staying in the city proper, where commercial and entertainment areas are located

such as bars, supermarkets, big malls, parks, and many more.

Staying in a city can be a hassle, especially for a group of family or peers,

and staying in a hotel would be an easy access for them. That is the reason why the

researchers choose Olongapo City as a locale for their study for it comprises of

different hotels and restaurant everywhere. For the researchers, it will be easy for

them to identify the strength and weaknesses of these industries in terms of the use

of technological advances and how these ideas are helping the business to cope up

with the needs of their customers. Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBMA) is also

located inside the visibility of Olongapo City, it also captures tourist and a good

place for vacation, serving people with its finest and classy hotels and restaurants.

Data Gathering Procedure

In this chapter the researchers will show the process of how the data were

gathered and interpreted into a useful information that will show how Hospitality

Industry in Olongapo City acquire ideas and concepts of Technological Innovation

to their business, and how these ideas were used to attract and improved their

customer services.

The researchers looked for two different hotels with great feedback from the

customers online to compare and differentiate both hotels according to the

customers reviews that they have with the question about the characteristics and

services that they are looking for a hotel accommodation. The researchers choose

Mansion Garden Hotel and Cherry Midtown Hotel both located in Olongapo City.

Based on the customers reviews, the researchers compare and differentiated the

two hotels according to cleanliness, location, service, value for money and

facilities.

Statistical Tool

The researchers used a statistical mean on finding the guest’s ratings of the

two hotels and their overall rating. Statistical mean is a certain kind of

mathematical average that is very useful in computer science, and in machine

learning. Simply speaking, the statistical mean is an arithmetic mean process, in

that it adds up all numbers in a data set, and then divides the total by the number of

data points. That's simple and straightforward, and so the arithmetic mean or

statistical mean has been widely used throughout the modern era and into the age

of computer programming.
