Math 101 Presentation Others

This document provides a summary of key concepts in functions presented by 5 students to their mathematics professor. It defines what a function is, discusses domain and codomain, outlines different types of functions including injective, surjective, and bijective functions, and covers inverse functions and function composition. Examples are provided to illustrate the different function types.

INTRODUCTION OF FUNCTION

 A function is a relation in which each element of the domain is paired

with exactly one element of the range.
 Another way of saying it is that there is one and only one output ( y )
with each input ( x )

x f(x) Y
Domain, Codomain and Range of a Function
► Let be the function, then set ‘A’ is called the domain of f and set ‘B’ is called
the codomain of f. The set of those elements of B which are related by elements
of A is called range of f
► For example :

A B A B
R7 R8
a 1 a 1

b 2 b 2

Dom (R7) = {a, b} Dom (R8) = {a, b}

Codomain = {1,2} Range Codomain = {1,2}
(R7)= {1} Range (R8)= {1,2}
Types of Function

 ❑ Injective Function
 ❑ Surjective Function
 ❑ Bijective Function
Injective Function
 A function in which one element of Domain Set is connected to one element
of Co-Domain Set is called (one-to-one) or injective function.

Surjective Function
 Definition: A function f from A to B is called onto, or surjective

Surjective
Bijective Function
 A function which is both injective (one to - one) and surjective (onto) is called
bijective (One-to-One Onto) Function.

Injective Flg. 1 Flg. 2

Surjective
 Example 1:
 Let A = {1,2,3} and B = {a,b,c}
 Define f as
 1→c
 2→a
 3→b
 Is f is a bijection? Yes. It is both one-to-
one and onto.
Inverse Function
 Definition: Let f be a bijection from set A to set B. The inverse function of f is the
function that assigns to an element b from B the unique element a in A such that
f(a) = b.

 The inverse function of f is denoted by f-1. Hence, f-1 (b) = a, when f(a) = b. If
the inverse function of f exists, f is called invertible.
Composition of Function
 Definition: Let f be a function from set A to set B and let g be a function from set
B to set C. The composition of the functions g and f, denoted by g O f is defined
by (g O f)(a) = g(f(a)).
