BABIES HAVING BABIES HAVING BABIES

Newly released statistics from rural clinics outside of Thohoyandou (Limpopo) show that
children as young as nine are falling pregnant or acquiring HIV infections. According to
the Department of Health, Mukhwantheli Secondary School in Dididi village has a record
number of 36 pregnant learners. Another 31 learners aged between nine and 19 from
both primary and secondary schools in the same area have been infected with HIV,
putting a strain on the department’s fight against the spread of HIV among the youth.

“We are worried as a department when learners between nine and 14 are being found to
be HIV positive and both their parents are negative. It tells us that most children in this
age group could be involved in sexual activities,” said Ramathuba.

“Life is about choices and if you choose to engage in early sexual activity you will regret
it when you grow older. Why should you break your virginity in the bushes when you can
read books and be educated and successful in life to a point where you can choose any
hotel in the world where you can then engage yourself in sexual activity as an adult?”

QUESTION 3

TRENDING

According to reports from Fin24, South Africa’s employment market shrank by 48, 000
jobs during the first quarter of this year. Statistics South Africa confirmed that on
average, employment declined by 0.6% over the last year. This decline was driven by a
decrease in trade (1.5%), business services (1%), community services (0.3%),
manufacturing (0.3%), and transport (0.2%).

Adzuna’s findings indicated that there was an increased trend towards a demand for
technical skills, although the number of vacancies in the field declined. This was
indicated by an analysis done on over 130,000 unique online job listings in South Africa.
This trend is predominantly ushered on by an annual trend of more new talent being
hired at the end and start of the year, excluding the month of December of course.

Civil engineers earned top-tier salaries for the month of March, pocketing an average of
R628,000 annually, a statistic that has gone unchanged. Although no conclusive
inference could be drawn, other engineering titles (such as geotechnical, facilities,
treatment, and section engineers) scored higher when it came to an increase in wages.
Engineering managers are currently earning annual remunerations of R862, 701 on
average, placing them at the top of their ranks. Compared to the stats Adzuna released
last year, outliers - including “surveyors” - now earn twice as much as they did at the end
of 2016. Employees in the sales force, such as sales managers and executives, are now
demanding salaries which are around 25% higher than they were in March 2017.

Could this trend indicate proof that companies are now paying more on performance in
an effort to tighten their belts in the current economic climate? Adzuna believes this
might be the case. Since March 2017, recruiters reported a marked decrease in salary at
49% lower, since the first quarter of 2017. The demand for recruiters is now much lower
than it was, which might be an indication of a seasonal trend or just a show of how
effectively companies have started to manage their own staffing solutions, instead of
outsourcing this service.

3.1. Briefly explain why the IT career field is the most ‘trending’ in South Africa. (1X2) (2)

3.2. Advise your friends as to why it is best to choose a scarce skill to study. (2X2) (4)

3.3. Critically discuss the disadvantages of choosing a job that is very popular
or in demand. (2X2) (4)

QUESTION 4

Read the extract below and answer the question that follows:

Source: 2019. Available from: https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/binge-drinking.htm

BINGE-OH!

Binge drinking is one of the most dangerous types of drinking and one of the most
common. It is classed as drinking more than 5 standard drinks per occasion (usually a
4 hour period). It also refers to the rate of drinking - that is - consuming drinks in quick
succession. It is also sometimes called “drinking to get drunk”; or “preloading” – which
means people drink to get drunk before they go out on the town or to a party.

Nearly half of drinkers aged 12 to 24 usually drink more than 4 standard drinks on a
single occasion, at least doubling their risk of injury in the 6 hours after drinking. The
main risks to young people from drinking too much include being involved in violence,
other crimes, sexual assaults, unprotected sex, accidental injury, and alcohol
poisoning (which can cause death).

Construct an essay on the dangers of binge drinking (please number your paragraphs
clearly).

Use the following as a guideline:

● Define the term ‘binge drinking’ and state TWO reasons why teenagers
are more likely to engage in binge drinking. (1+2) (3)
● Discuss TWO possible negative consequences of binge drinking in teens. (2X2) (4)
● Recommend ONE way in which teenagers can protect themselves
against sexual assault, unwanted sexual attention or unprotected sex. In
your answer, also indicate how they can influence others to do the same. (1X3) (3)
