Gear Report Troubleshoot123

This document is a report on a gear experiment conducted by three mechanical engineering students. The objectives of the experiment were to differentiate between gear meshing and backlash, identify gear maintenance practices such as inspection, and construct maintenance procedures. The report details the safety precautions, equipment used, procedures followed, results obtained, and conclusions drawn. It finds that incorrect gear mesh can cause failure and stresses, so mesh should be checked when replacing gears. Regular maintenance like cleaning prevents friction and maintains gear quality.

Danesh A/L Dorai (24DKM20F1122)
Kumaresan A/L Muthiah (24DKM20F1171) Lecturer Name: Sir Alias Bin Othman
Shanker A/L Poovalaganathan (24DKM20F1182)

Class: DKM 5G

Course Learning Outcome : CLO2 Organize appropriately experiments in groups according to Standard
Operating Procedure (P4, PLO 5)

Title: Gear

Objective: 1. Differentiate gear meshing and backlash.

2. Identify gear maintenance practice such as daily routine inspection.
3. Construct the maintenance procedures.

Safety 1. Work habits – permission must be obtained from the workshop supervisor or lecturer
Precaution: before proceeding any work.
2. Always know the hazards associated with the equipment/materials that are being
utilized in the workshop.
3. Housekeeping work- work areas and equipment are to be thoroughly cleaned after
used.
4. Focus attention and calm at work.
5. Know the appropriate emergency response procedures.

1.B Place gears Place the all gears accordingly to none
correctly make it functionable

2.B Use lubric paper Then use a lubric paper to get a Lubric paper
to get a perfect good rotation for the gears

Results:

Discussion: 1. Why must the gear not have “loose” space?

DJJ30082 MECHANICAL WORKSHOP PRACTICE 3 pg.4

Answer: This "loose" mesh will not last very long under power and will eventually
strip.

2. How to prevent the basic common failure in gears?

Answer: The common failure in gears can be prevented by applying lubricants and
keeping lubricant clean.

3. How to maintain the quality of the gear?

Answer: The best way to maintain the best quality of the working gear is to do
regular maintenance to it, cleaning the teeth of the gears to prevent friction.

Conclusion: Through this practical activity, we have learned that gear mesh misalignment may
result in shifts in the load distribution of a gear pair that results in increasing contact
and bending stresses, moving the peak bending stresses to the edge of the face
width, and might also increase gear noise. Incorrect gear mesh is the most common
cause of stripped spur gears. Gear mesh should be checked and adjusted anytime a
gear is replaced.
