we , siya , mahek and prisha are going to explain about


tenses through a ppt presentation

Siya (definition ) : tense is a term used to indicate whether a sentence (a verb) is an action done in
the past, the present or the future. there are 3 types of tense : past tense, present tense, and future
tense

Siya (past tense definition): the past tense is the verb form you use to talk about things that
happened in the past.

Eg: I played with her yesterday…………..in this the played is showing that the activity was done in the
past

Siya (simple past tense definition ):


 to refer an action which was already done before the time of speaking
ex: we had cake last night
 to indicate something was done in the past as a habit
ex: my brother always had cereals for breakfast
 to express an action that occurred over a period of time in the past
ex: I lived in Kolkata till I was 4

siya (past continues tense ):

 To describe an action going on in the past over a period of time :


ex- she was working on her research till 3am
 to describe an action that was in progress when another action took place :
ex- we were playing monopoly when my mom came

structure of past continuous is :was/were + verb + -ing

siya (past perfect) :

 1. to denote an action that took place before another action in the past :
ex- when we reached the theatre, the doors had been shut
 2. to indicate a past hope or desire that has remained unfulfilled;
we use words like hope, expect, think :
ex- I had hoped to go to a cycling race

structure : had + past participle form of the verb

such as : cook will be cooked ……..where you have to add en/ed to the ending

siya (past perfect continuous ):

 to express an action that began before a definite moment in the past, had continued up to
that moment and was still in progress at that moment, or had recently finished :
EX - 1. the student had been cheating when the teacher arrived
EX - 2. the worried parents had been consulting doctors for atleast two weeks

structure: had been + present participle form of the verb ……….laugh = laughing (present participle)
prisha (present tense definition):

Present tense is a term used for verbs that describe action happening right now.

example: I am eating a cake

in this eating is telling that the action is currently taking place

prisha (simple present definition):

1. to state a universal truth :


ex - there are 7 continents
2. to describe something that has been happening for some time and is still continuing
: ex - the shahs live in America
3. to refer to something that happens regularly or is a habit :
ex- I read books every night
4. in proverbs that are considered permanent truths :
ex - honesty is the best policy

prisha ( present continues tense ):

1.to describe an action that is continuous happening now.

• Ex:- Gaurav is cooking rice and soup.

2. to describe an action that has been going on over a period of time but may not be going on at the
time of speaking.

• Ex:- anshul and arpita are going to the gym these days.

3.for an action that is about to take place in the near future.

• Ex:- their plane is landing at 9am

(Structure: is/are + verb +-ing)

prisha (present perfect ):

1. to indicate that an action has been completed just now or a little while ago. Ex:-

 I have bought a new car.


 Bijoy has completed his homework.

2. to express an action whose time is not given and is not definite. Ex :-

• He has painted this.

3. to describe a past event which has its effect on the present. Ex :-

• We have received a good response from our clients. (So we will continue doing what we
were doing.)

4. To talk about continuing state and not an action .Ex:-


• suman has been in bed since last night
• we have been friends for ten years

Structure : has/have + past participle form verb

Prisha (Present perfect continuous):

1.to express an action which began sometime in the past, is in progress at the time of speaking and
will extend into the future.

• Ex:- They have been playing fir two hours

2.to indicate an action that finished just a short while ago.

• Ex :-He has been cleaning his apartment all day (he has stopped cleaning now.)

(Structure: has/have been + present participle form of the verb)

Mahek (future):

Future tense:-

a tense expressing an action that has not yet happened or a state that does not yet exist.

 Ex- I will go to play tomorrow

Mahek( Simple Future):

1. to say what we think or know for certain will happen in the future.
• Ex:- I will make pudding for breakfast

2. to make a promise or to offer to do something.


• Ex :- We will pick you up at 4 p.m.
• You look tired. I will get you a cup of tea.

Mahek (Future continuous):

1. To denote an action that will be in progress at some point of time in the future.
 Ex:- sakshi will be sleeping in the evening.

2. To talk about future events that are planned or to describe an action that is fairly
certain to happen in the future.
 Ex :- the principal will be announcing the names of outstanding students
 my pen is broken. I shall be buying a new one tomorrow

structure : will/shall + be + verb + -ing


mahek (Future perfect)

1. To refer to the completion of an action by a certain time in the future.


 Ex :- we will have submitted our holiday homework by then.

structure : had + past participle form of the verb

mahek (Future perfect continuous):-

1. To express an action which will begin before a given moment in the future, will continue up
to that moment and will be in progress even at that moment.
 Ex:-mahima will have been teaching at the school for 5 years by the end of this
month.

structure: will/shall + have been + present participle form of the verb

prisha: now we have some questions for you to answer


first question is why do you live in France? (give time to answer)
the correct answer is SIMPLE PRESENT tense.

Siya : second question is you are visiting English club (give time to answer)
the correct answer is PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Mahek : 3rd question is I haven't had breakfast yet.


the correct answer is PRESENT PERFECT tense.
4th question is Were you working at 9 o'clock?
the correct answer is PAST CONTINUOUS tense
