Activity Le4

This document outlines an activity for pre-service teachers as part of their Learning Experience 4 course. The activity involves observing Grade 1 students in a music class and recording evidence of cognitive abilities based on Piaget's theory of cognitive development. Some examples of cognitive abilities observed in the students included classifying examples of steady and divided beats, reading and singing rhythm songs, and answering questions correctly. The document also includes questions for students to reflect on factors that can enhance or hamper cognitive development and suggestions for future activities to support students' cognitive growth.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE 4
Understanding the Learners
I. INTRODUCTION

Learning Experience 4 is a follow up of what you have learned in your Child and Adolescent
Learners and Learning Principles earlier. This field experience will specifically help you validate the
age-typical cognitive characteristics of middle childhood (Grades 1 to 6) and adolescent (Grade 7 to
12) learners according to Piagets’ theory of cognitive development. We will be focusing on these
development stages since they are the learners in Basic Education (K-12).

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES

 Identify the cognitive characteristics of learners belonging to their particular developmental stage.

ACTIVITY

FOR BEED

Record as many evidences as you can for each ability

Observed Evidences of Cognitive Abilities
(Concrete Operational)

Grade Observed: 1 Subject Area :Music Time: 9:30am to 10:30am

Subject Matter: Steady beat and Divided beat
Lesson Objective: Recognize the difference of steady beat and divided beat.
Cognitive Abilities Evidences
(Specific student behaviour/ action/ response/
work sample)
 Children can classify or group The teacher write the example of steady beat
and divided beats in the view board. After that,
the teacher ask the students to identify which
of the examples are presenting steady beat and
divided beat. The students are correctly
identify the example of it.
 Children begin to read and write early The teacher let the students to read and sing
in middle childhood and should be
skilful in reading and writing by the some example rhythm songs in the book.
end of this stage
 They can think through their actions
The teacher ask the students to make a sounds
and trace back events that happened to
that shows steady beat and divided beats.
explain situations
 Children learn best when they are While the teacher is discussing, she notice that
active. While they are learning rather some of the students doing something in their
than just listening to an adult explain chairs and some of them are talking to their
rules seatmate and they are not listening. So the
teacher call the students and ask them some
questions regarding on their topic and the
students answer the questions correctly.
 Children can focus attention and take The teacher ask the students to answer one
time to search for needed information activity in the book but some students did not
finish to their activity because of some
distraction caused by their seatmates.
 There is greater memory capability The teacher write an activity in the view board
because many routines are automatic that students should write the symbol of steady
now beat and divided beat.

ACTIVITY 2
Drawing generalizations form observations of learners’ behaviors.

1. Are all the learners in a given age range (Example middle childhood or adolescence) capable
of performing all the cognitive abilities? Give reasons for your response.

Yes, because everyone of us may have differences but I do believe that all of us can do
cognitive abilities but there is some instances that they did not do it perfectly and understand
not until they saw it to others that ahead from them. The learning’s of every learners has a
process to develop and to enhance.

2. What cultural factors can enhance the cognitive development of learners? Illustrate

The cultural factors that can enhance then cognitive development of learners is their
cognitive skills wherein the parents have a vital role on the development of the learners.
Parents are one of the important people who educate every learners to develop their critical
thinking, problem-solving and also their self-control.
3. What factors can hamper development? Illustrate

The factors that can hamper the learners development is their cultural differences, beliefs,
morals and values depending on how they are educating and parenting by their parents.
Each parents have diverse ways on they are taking care, educating and parenting their
children’s.

PORTFOLIO ENTRY NO. 4

Think of others activities which you as a future teacher can do or introduce to further
enhance your learners’ cognitive development. Choose a specific level and subject area to
serve as context for your work.
