INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
1. The duration of this paper is 2 hours.
2. Note that Moodle will automatically close any transaction with you immediately after the
due time is reached.
3. You are required to attempt ALL the 4 questions.
4. Each question carries twenty-five (25) marks.
5. Show your working clearly and neatly.
6. All diagrams should be well labeled.
7. Indicate your Name, Student Number and NRC number on the answer script.
Question 1
a. Derive an expression for the torque developed in an induction motor by Thevenin’s
theorem. [5]
c. Determine the matrix [Ldqo], and the corresponding flux linkage ψdqo for a salient pole
synchronous machine by applying the rotor reference frame, , to the stator flux
linkage equations, assuming zero current in all rotor windings. [12]
Question 2
a. Describe with the aid of a neatly labelled diagram the Kron’s Primitive machine. [5]
b. Explain 5 fundamental assumptions of a typical Primitive Machine. [5]
c. Write down induction-machine flux linkage current relations in dq0 frame assuming
that the induction machine has three-phase windings on both the rotor and the stator
and that there are no saliency effects. [15]
Question 3
a. The generic quantities fas, fbs, fcs taken to be a-b-c quantities varying with
ia = Ia cos 00
ib = Ia cos (-1200)
ic = Ia cos (+1200)
The rotor is rotating at some synchronous speed ωs, and the rotor direct
axis is aligned with the stator phase-a axis at time t = 0.
Calculate the direct - and quadrature - axis current components. [15]
1
Question 4
a. Explain the following in relation to the study of synchronous machine dynamics:
i. subtransient period [3]
ii. transient period [3]
iii. steady-state period [3]
b. Illustrate the salient effect of a sudden symmetrical short circuit across the terminals
of a synchronous machine, and name the condition. [6]
c. The transient reactance in a synchronous machine is defined as the ratio of no-load
voltage to the short-circuit current during transient period.
Sketch its equivalent-circuit representation. [10]
