This document is the question paper for the subject Reinforced Concrete Design (CE-3203) for the 5th semester B.Tech examination. It contains 7 questions related to topics in reinforced concrete design. Students are asked to answer any 4 questions out of the 7 questions given. The questions cover topics like failure modes of RCC members, design of beams, slabs, staircases, footings and columns. Design of the members involves calculation of reinforcement details using limit state design method according to Indian standard code IS 456-2000.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, ROURKELA - 769 008

End Semester Examination 2019-20

B. Tech. 5th Semester (Autumn), November - 2019
Subject: Reinforced Concrete Design (CE- 3203)
Full Marks: 100 Duration of Exam: 3 Hours
Answer any FOUR questions. Use of IS 456-2000 is permitted.

Q1a. Write and explain the different modes of failure of a RCC [15+10]
1) Flexural member. 2) Axially loaded short column. 3) Column with moments.
b. Explain the factors affecting shear strength of reinforced concrete without shear reinforcement.

Q2a. Derive the equations for depth of neutral axis and moment of resistance for an singly , [15+10]
reinforced, under -reinforced T-section for different positions of neutral axis in the section.
b. What are the parameters considered in serviceability limit state? How are they controlled in RCC
design.

Q3. A three span continuous beam with simply supported ends is shown in Figure 1. Design the [25]
beam using M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Use moment coefficient method for design and
draw reinforcement details. Assume width of beam =280 mm and effective cover =30mm.

W=22 kN/m
W=20 kN/m W=20 kN/m

Q4. Design a slab panel of size 4.2mx7.6 m with corners held down. The two longer sides of the [25]
panel are continuous. The live load on slab is 3 kN/m2 and floor finishing is 1 kN/m2. Show the
reinforcement details for main reinforcement with the help of neat diagram. Use M20
concrete and Fe250 steel.

Q5. Design an intermediate flight of a suitable staircase provided in a public building. The size [25]
of room is 4m x 4m (center to center) and height to ascend is 3.6m. Use M20 concrete and
Fe415 steel. Live load including floor finishing is 5 kN/m2. Show reinforcement detailing .

Q6. Design a RCC sloped footing to support a column of size 450mm x 450 mm , carrying an [25]

ultimate load of 1250 kN. The safe bearing capacity of the soil is 280 kN/m . Use M25 and
Fe500 and apply all the norms specified in IS 456-2000. Also draw reinforcement details.
Q7. Design a column of size 450mm x450mm using M25 concrete and Fe500 steel for the [25]
following data. The column receives moments about major (Mux) and minor axes (Muy) at
top and bottom and undergoes a single curvature deflection. Assume reinforcement distributed
equally on four sides.
The unsupported ht. of column lu=6m , Ultimate axial load Pu =2000 kN ,
Effective height along major axis leffx = 4.8m and minor axis leffy=3.9m.
Mux1= 100 kNm and Muy1=60 kNm at top, Mux2=80 kNm and Muy2 = 40 kNm at bottom,
factors k1=0,207 and k2=0.425 and effective cover d’=45mm and percentage of steel p=2%.
The interaction chart 48 is provided in Figure2.
