GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. This module is made to help you continue education amidst the threat of this COVID19 pandemic
which has affected not only the Philippines but the entire world. This includes lessons and
activities that will help you develop further understanding in the study of computing.
2. You will be provided with a hard-copy of the module. This is expected to be finished in one week.
Note: There are activities with specific directions on their mode of submission so make sure to
read, understand and follow the directions properly. Some activities are to be submitted only
online to also improve your ICT skills so it would be better to have access to the internet from time
to time.
3. For those who have limited or no access to strong internet connectivity, you can write your
answers on a long bond paper which will be collected weekly in exchange for the next module.
You can directly indicate your answers, provided that they are labeled accordingly.
4. It is highly recommended that you jot down important details of the lessons in the modules to
serve as your personal notes in a different notebook or any piece of paper since modules will be
retrieved at certain schedules.
6. Further questions and clarifications will be entertained through email, messenger or SMS. You
can also write them on a separate bond paper which will be collected together with your answered
modules.
7. Do not send any unnecessary information to the contact details given to you. Refrain from sharing
these to respect your teacher’s privacy.
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of the information technology requirement is to ensure that students achieve an
essential understanding of information technology infrastructure encompassing systems and devices;
learn to make the most of the Web and other network resources; protect their digital data and
devices; take advantage of latest technologies; and become more sophisticated technology users and
consumers.
Because software development is based on computer hardware, this chapter will discuss the
general nature of computer hardware and its relationship to software as a way to prepare students for
software development. The authors hope that this text will engage a new generation of software
developers including not only the mathematically and scientifically inclined students commonly found
in programming courses, but also a new generation of students from the arts and humanities who are
finding that computing is as relevant to their fields as it has ever been in the sciences.

Objective: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize the importance of computers in
various fields.
Let’s Explore!
Uses of Computers in Various Fields
The modern age is the age of Information Technology. The computer technology has
importance in every field of life. With the help of IT, all departments of life and organization are
performing their functions efficiently & perfectly. Computers have made a significant impact on our
society. Today they are an essential part of every person’s life. It is difficult to imagine our lives
without a computer being involved. Electronic computers have been around for a relatively short
period of time.
At home, computers can help us to purchase different things via Internet. We can check our
bank balance and pay different utility bills online. Computers are used in making a telephone call,
typing a letter and driving a car, cooking food in a microwave oven, and so on. Computers are found
in offices, banks, schools, businesses and in the every field. They are used in banks for record
keeping and maintaining accounts of customers. Banking and commerce could not have existed on a
large scale without use of computers. Computers are widely used in banks for calculation purpose.
Let’s Expand!
Computers have also revolutionized manufacturing processes. They are used to automate
processes in factories. The use of computers in factories has increased productivity and quality of
products. Their use has also reduced production costs. Computers are used to making the
statements, check and balance of employee salaries in factories.
In accounting and finance activities, managers are using computer system to estimate
revenues and other business activities, find out the best sources and uses of funds, manage cash
and other financial resources, analyze investments and perform different reviews to ensure that the
organization is going well and that all financial reports and documents are accurate and up-to-date.
As computers can do jobs better and more efficiently, they are replacing workers in offices,
businesses and in factories. Therefore, many people see computers as a threat to their jobs.
However, the use of computers creates many more new jobs relating to design, manufacturing,
installation and maintenance of computer hardware and software. Different changes have also taken
place through the force of interactive technology, web-cams, video conferencing etc. Now, with the
help of the Internet and web-cams a video conference can be set up in which everybody can take part
in the meeting without leaving their physical offices.
Computers are used in every field of life. They are used in homes, business, educational
institutions, research organizations, and government offices. They are used for a variety of purposes.
They are used as typewrites, calculators, accounting systems, record keepers, data processors and
even as telecommunication systems. Following are some examples of uses of computers:
Medical Field
Computers are used in hospital management system, patient history, CT Scan, X-ray, ECG,
other medical tests, monitoring and diagnosis purpose.
Homes
Computers have many uses in homes. Personal computers are used for word processing,
maintaining personal records and connecting to the Internet. Our homes also contain many devices

that use computer systems. For example, computer system is used in the microwave to control its
processes. The TV uses computer to tune to the broadcasting stations. Many houses have satellite
dish or cable decoders. The decoder uses computer to process the signals so that the TV can use
them. At our homes, computers can help us to get different information regarding different goods and
services, check our bank balance, get our bank statement and at the same time pay our different
utility bills by using online service.
Entertainment
Computers are playing important role for the entertainment of human beings. People can
watch TV programs, shows, movies, on internet. People can play games online, listening music and
many more entertainment is available on internet.
Government
Computers are extensively used for word processing, data processing in government offices.
They are also used to network government office for data communication and give us a paperless
environment.
Business
Businesses use computers for keeping payroll records, printing pay-checks, billing customers,
preparing tax returns. Computers are used in marketing and stock exchange. Computers are also
used to maintain employees’ information and inventories. Nowadays many businesses use websites
to sell their products and contact their customers. With today’s increases competition life and global
market environment, it is almost impossible for a firm or organization to stay and remains in the
market without the widespread use of computer technology.
Industry
Computers are used to perform several industrial tasks. They are used to design products,
control manufacturing processes, control inventory, manage projects, and so on. Computers are used
to control and manage different manufacturing systems and continuous running of the industry.
Education
Computers are used in Computer Aided Learning (CAL), distance learning, online classes and
online examinations. Computers are used in teaching and research. The students can solve so many
problems through computer. Students can get different information related to their subjects on
computer. They are used to do lengthy and complicated mathematical calculations. They are also
used to collect, store, and evaluate data from experiments. Nowadays, computers are also being
used in distance learning programmes, computer based training. There are different methods in
which educational institutions can use computers to educate the students. Many computer-based
softwares are available in market.

Computer Engineering
Is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science
required to develop computer hardware and software. Computer engineers usually have training in
electronic engineering (electrical engineering), software design, and hardware-software integration
instead of only software engineering or electronic engineering.
Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing,
from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit
design.
