1.5 Lesson

1. The document discusses inverse functions and their properties, including: - The inverse of a function can be found by switching the x and y coordinates or by interchanging the domain and range. - The graph of an inverse function f^-1(x) is a reflection of the original function f(x) across the line y=x. - Examples are provided to demonstrate finding the inverse of linear, constant, and square root functions algebraically and graphically. 2. For a function f(x) to have an inverse function f^-1(x), f(x) must be a one-to-one correspondence so that each input x maps to a single output y. 3.

MCR 3U1
Unit 3: Chapter 1 Introductions to Functions

1.5 The Inverse Function and Its Properties

Learning Goal:
By the end of the lesson, I will be able to
a) determine, through investigation, the relationship between the domain and range
of a function and the domain and range of the inverse relation, and determine
whether or not the inverse relation is a function
b) determine, using function notation when appropriate, the algebraic representation
of the inverse of a linear or quadratic function, given the algebraic representation
of the function [e.g., f(x) = (x – 2) – 5], and make connections,between the
algebraic representations of a function and its inverse e.g., the inverse of a linear
function involves applying the inverse operations in the reverse order

Inverse functions are a special class of functions that undo each other.

*The ordered pairs of g(x) can be found by switching the coordinates

in each ordered pair of f(x).

• The inverse of a function can be found by interchanging x and y in

the equation of the function.
• The inverse of a function can be found by interchanging the
domain and the range of the function.
• The graph of f -1(x) is the graph of f (x) reflected in the line y = x
• A function and its inverse are congruent and are symmetric about
the line y = x
