Paper Punch Button Proposal Sheet
Button Designs Button Template (large size)
Scissors
Button Components (3 piece)

LEARNING GOAL: To demonstrate button making with drawing techniques.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

 List steps involved in button making.


 Explain drawing techniques for good quality designs.
 Utilize size and shape constraints in designing buttons.
 Operate the button press under supervision.

INTRODUCTION:

 Introduce students to topic

BODY:

Drawing Designs
 Colour in one direction
 Colour over edge of template to avoid white space on your button
 Erase pencil lines following fineliner.
 Ensure words are inside dotted line to avoid cutoffs.
 Design should include colour, word, image, and demonstrate appropriate use of space.
 Use computer printouts to trace designs if wanted.
 Use dark colours last.
Button Creating
1. Cut out design roughly using scissors.
2. Place design in paper punch, centering it.
3. Punch paper using minimum force.
4. Remove scrap paper from punch.
5. Place shield in front of button machine, convex side facing up.
6. Stack design facing you.
7. Stack clear circle.
8. Spin button machine and press handle after bringing to pressure.
9. Place backside of button with zig zag facing up in back of button machine.
10. Spin button machine again and press handle after bringing to pressure.
Introduce Assignment
 Students will:
o Create 4 separate button design proposals
o Choose 3 design proposals to make buttons of
o Brainstorm a list of 6 button ideas

CONCLUSION/SUMMARY:

 Summarize the lesson


 Ask questions to ensure student understanding
o Which lines should words be inside?
o Why did I colour out of the lines?
o What if you are not artistic?
o Etc.

EVALUATION: Buttons will be graded.

ASSIGNMENT: Design 4 buttons, create 3 buttons.
