UNIT 4 Assignment

1. With suitable block diagrams, derive expressions for input resistance and output resistance
with feedback for a current – to – voltage feedback amplifier.
Soln: Please refer PESU Academy Slides or Textbook

2. The circuit shown is designed for a nominal gain of 4. (a) Determine the actual gain if A1 =
1000. (b) Determine the percentage change in the gain if A1 drops to 500.

Soln: Nominal gain Af = 1/ β Hence β = 0.25.

Actual gain Af = A1/(1+A1β) = 3.984, for A1 = 1000
Actual gain Af = 3.968, for A1 = 500
Percentage change in gain = (3.984 – 3.968) / 3.984 = 0.004 = 0.4%
Inference: Though the open-loop gain decreases by 50%, the closed-loop gain decreases
by only 0.4% implying that the closed-loop gain is very stable

3. Determine a) closed loop gain b) closed loop input impedance c) closed loop output
impedance for the circuit shown, Assume R1+R2 >>RD

Soln: The circuit is a Common – Gate amplifier with voltage – to – voltage feedback.
a) The open-loop gain of CG Amplifier considering λ = γ = 0 is A0 = gmRD
Also, β = R2/(R1+R2)
Hence closed-loop gain = gmRD / [1+ gmRD R2/(R1+R2)]
b) Open – loop input resistance considering λ = γ = 0 is Rin = 1/gm
Hence closed-loop input resistance Rinf = Rin (1 + A0β)
= (1/gm) [1+ gmRD R2/(R1+R2)]
c) Open – loop output resistance considering λ = γ = 0 is Rout = RD
Hence closed-loop output resistance Routf = Rout / (1 + A0β)
= RD / [1+ gmRD R2/(R1+R2)]
4. Determine the loop gain of the circuit shown below

Soln: The circuit to determine the loop gain Aβ, as per the procedure, is shown below

The voltage at the input of CS Amplifier is VA = R2Vt / (R1 + R2).

The output of the CS Amplifier is Vf = -gmRD VA
Vout = A1VE wherein the error voltage VE = Vf – 0
Hence Vout = A1(-gmRD VA)
Vout = A1[-gmRD R2Vt / (R1 + R2)]
The transfer function Vout / Vt = A1[-gmRD R2 / (R1 + R2)]
Loop gain Aβ = A1[gmRD R2 / (R1 + R2)]

5. A voltage amplifier with feedback has a gain of 50. It is found that without feedback, an
input signal of 30mV is required to produce a given output, whereas with feedback the input
signal must be 0.6V to produce the same output. Determine A0 and β.
Soln: Given Af = 50, Vin = 0.6V.
Hence Vout = Af Vin = 30V
Also, the input without feedback VE = 30mV
Hence A0 = Vout / VE = 1000
Using the expression, Af = A0 / (1+A0 β), we get β = 0.019
