Module 5: Assessment
Prepare a short report on how an organization of your choice motivates its people
to perform their jobs.
Every person needs motivation occasionally. You may use incentives and recognition
programs to encourage your employees to become happier and more productive at work.
When a person interacts with a situation, they become motivated. It's a mental condition
in which the individual decides how much desire, interest, and energy to put into action. It also
refers to how much weight a person places on objects or ideas that serve as a guide to
behavior. It is made up of three parts, as stated in the equation below.
Motivation = Intensity + direction + persistence of effort
Additionally, there are four motivational methods and programs, these are Motivation
through job design, Organizational behavior modification, Motivation through recognition and
pride; and Motivation through financial incentives. First, Motivation through job design is the
allocation of specific work tasks to individuals and groups. Allocating jobs and tasks means
specifying the contents, method, and relationships of jobs to satisfy technological and
organizational requirements, as well as the personal needs of jobholders. The five core
characteristics of job design are skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and job
feedback. Second, Organizational behavior modification is a technique for personnel
management that focuses on improving observable and measurable work-related behavior.
Examples include absence or tardiness, but also quality or quantity of work. Third, Motivation
through recognition and pride is a natural human need and it is a strong motivator. Pride is also
a motivator, but one that is intrinsic. Workers who achieve outstanding performance experience
the emotion of pride. Also, Recognition not only boosts individual employee engagement but
also has been found to increase productivity and loyalty to the company, leading to higher
retention. Lastly, Motivation through financial incentives is a way to encourage employees to
work efficiently. It can be paid by an employer in monetary or non-monetary ways. A Financial
Incentive is a monetary benefit that is paid by a company to motivate employees or to
encourage a specific action or behavior.
Here are some examples of motivational ways from other companies on how they
motivate their employees:
1. A Friendly Work Environment
2. Acknowledge Employees’ Achievement
3. Rewarding Employees
4. Positive Communication
5. Welcome All Ideas
6. Give Your Employees Purpose
7. Encourage Team Work
To begin with, employees who are involved in decision-making feel a personal stake in
the organization and in its success. This naturally leads to more productive workers, as they
want to contribute more, especially when combined with higher morale and job satisfaction and
they feel their contribution is valued, and the process of sharing opinions and discussing work
matters itself can foster a sense of teamwork and improve relationships between workers
themselves. Another way is providing feedback is essential for employees' continuous
improvement. Feedback clarifies expectations, helps people in learning from their mistakes and
builds their self-esteem. Moreover, If you want your company to perform at its best, you must
keep your staff informed about what's going on. Employees who are well-informed are more
likely to be engaged, productive, and make fewer mistakes. Lack of communication ultimately
forces your employees to fend for themselves in the dark. This can lead to misunderstandings,
mistakes, and low morale. Most importantly, Trust is good for morale and motivation. Trust
builds teamwork and collaboration. Trust increases loyalty and the willingness to stay with a
company. Trust decreases stress levels and hostility in the work environment.
Therefore, employees are an organization's most important resource, and they should
be treated with respect and kept motivated at all times. Employees who are well-motivated are
always willing to put in long hours to help the company achieve its goals. Individually and
collectively, employees contribute to the achievement of the organizational goal for long-term
competitive advantage. It can be accomplished in a variety of methods, including ensuring safe
working conditions for employees, appropriately paying employees for the work they do, and
offering training programs to improve employees' skills.
