Monitoring Process

The Monitoring Process

• Once the models have been built, someone has to monitor them for early signs of
equipment problems
• It’s crucial to put in place a formal monitoring process in your organization
• By its very nature, “early warning” is never an emergency, and is therefore the easiest thing to skip
when things get hectic
• Having people formally assigned to the monitoring tasks ensures it won’t get overlooked

Daily Reviews
General Principles

• Use PRiSM Web rather than System Monitoring

• Assign a state to all New Alerts
• Check existing Alerts
• Remove old Alerts
• Create a standardized process

Viewing Alerts

• The Alerts tab shows a list of deployed projects

and their Alert states
• Many ways to arrange this list:
• Column sort/filters
• Quick filters
• Search
• Hierarchical Selection
• Asset Hierarchy
• Template Hierarchy
• User Lists

Tips to Speed Your Analysis

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Tips to Speed Your Analysis
Alerts Screen

• Build User Lists for commonly viewed groups of projects

• Set your desired default columns in Preferences
• Look at “Latest Alert” column with “7 Day Event History”
• Use the Alert State icon to prioritize your review
• Set Filters to help
• Click the Case Status icon to view any cases associated with that project

Tips to Speed Your Analysis
Trending

• Watch for shifts in the OMR, then check individual sensors for changes at that time
• Click on Signal Contributions and Fault Diagnostics to view the associated bar graphs
• Click a specific bar for a shortcut to the associated trends
• Check for Alert shading at the top each trend
• Indicates a signal “underneath” that one is in Alert: OMR > Individual Signals > Deviations

• Click on the Alert state icon next to the point name to change the Alert state from within
the trend window

Alert Management -
Choosing an Alert State

Choosing an Alert State

• Goal: Keep the list organized

• Goal: Keep the list clean
• Use Alert Management to categorize each Alert

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Choosing an Alert State

For a ‘New’ Alert:

1. Look at the charts

2. Determine the most likely cause of the Alert
3. Set category and take required action

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

If you see
something, say
Pick a bucket something

Rinse and repeat

Not of immediate
concern

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Choosing an Alert State

For an ‘Existing’ Alert:

1. Check if condition has changed
• Stable, worse, or better?
2. Take required action / change state if needed
3. Clear if possible!

When to Use Each Alert State

Pending State

• Choose if...
• Condition is not of immediate concern
• More time is needed to see if a trend develops
• Will come back as Action Due
• Try not to put right back into Pending again

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Acknowledge State

• Choose if...
• Condition is not of immediate concern
• Condition is a “special case” that doesn’t fit elsewhere
• May overlap somewhat with the Monitor state

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Monitor State

• Choose if...
• Watching something closely; not yet worth notifying end user
• Something that will likely turn into an Equipment issue soon
• Similar to the Acknowledge state, but for more concerning issues

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Model State

• Choose if...
• Equipment appears OK, but model is tracking poorly
• New ambient conditions
• New operating conditions
• Post-outage changes
• Remove (or add) sensors to Operational Profile

• Can include adding new data, removing old data, changing thresholds, etc.
• May need to wait to collect more data

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Sensor State

• Choose if...
• Alert appears due to a bad sensor issue
• Flatlined
• Erratic
• Needs calibration

• Open a case to track!

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Equipment State

• Choose if...
• Alert appears to be caused by something wrong at the site
• Mechanical Problem
• Process Upset

• These are often the issues that lead to bona fide catches
• Open a case to track!

© 2020 AVEVA Group plc and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.

Clear State

• Choose if...
• Condition has returned to model predictions
• Transitory issue
• Model update completed
• Work done on equipment
• Alert no longer relevant

• If there was an open case, close it

Alert Management in Practice
PRiSM Web

Case Management in AVEVA Predictive Analytics
When to make a case?

• Make cases to track potential equipment reliability or process/performance issues

• Also consider making cases for instrumentation issues
• It’s usually easier to create a case when you first detect and report an issue
• Correspondence between the monitoring center and engineers, operators, maintenance, etc. can be
uploaded to the case

Tip: As soon as you mark an

Alert as “Equipment” or
“Sensor,” create the case
directly from the Clear Alert
window
