Circular Motion

The document discusses uniform circular motion. It defines uniform circular motion as the motion of an object moving in a circular path with constant speed. It describes the key parameters of circular motion including period, frequency, angular speed, tangential speed, and centripetal acceleration. Several example problems are worked through applying the concepts and formulas for these parameters.

HELLO!

Uniform circular
motion
Uniform circular motion

The motion of an object moving

in a circular path with a constant
speed is defined to be uniform
circular motion.
Uniform circular motion

S: arc, distance in the circular path

r: radius of the circle
θ: swept angle in Radians
Interesting Fact
π (Pi) is circumference divided by diameter
Uniform circular motion

The angle swept out by the radius vector is

a) in degree measurement: 360 degrees
b) in radian measurement: 2π radians

!"#°
2𝜋 radians = 360° ⟹ 1 radian = %&
= 57.3 °
Period and Frequency

Period is a time needed for an object

to complete one revolution
%&' )*+,
T= (
T= -.+/,'

The frequency counts the number of

revolutions per unit time.
1
𝑓=
𝑇
Tangential speed

The velocity vector of the object is

always a tangent to the circular path,
and is called tangential velocity.
Angular speed

The angle swept out by the radius

vector per unit time is called the
angular speed of the object.
Example
The drum of a washing machine rotates 1200 times in 1 minute.
a) What is the period and frequency of the drum?
b) What is the angular speed of the drum?
c) If the diameter of the drum is 40 cm, what is the tangential speed
of a point on the drum? (Take π=3)

a) f = 20 Hz,
T = 0.05 s
b) 𝝎 = 120 rad/s
c) v = 24 m/s
Problem #1
An object exhibiting uniform circular motion, as shown in the
figure, travels from point K to point L in 1 s. Find the following
parameters of circular motion
a) Period
b) Frequency
c) Angular speed.
d) What is the tangential speed of the object if the radius of the
circular motion is 0.5m?
(Take π to be 3)
a) 6s
b) 0.17 Hz
c) 1 rad/s
d) 0.5 m/s
Centripetal acceleration
Centripetal acceleration
In a uniform circular motion the
direction of the velocity is always
changing.

Centripetal acceleration is directed

to the center of circle.
Example
A toy car is following a circular path with a constant speed of v = 3
m/s and a period of 2 s, as shown in the figure. If the radius of the
circular path is 1 m, find the centripetal acceleration of the car
(Take π to be 3)

a = 9 m/s2

Central Asia. It is 50 m high and takes 15 minutes to make
one revolution.
a) What is the tangential velocity of cabines? (π=3)
b) What is the tangential speed of the point 10 m from
the centre?

a) v ≈ 0.17 m/s
b) v ≈ 0.067 m/s

c) The tangential speed at the rim of the wheel.
d) The centripetal acceleration at the rim of the wheel. (Take π to be 3)

a) 25 Hz,
T = 0.04 s
a) 15 m/s
b) 45 m/s
c) 6750 m/s2

speed of a point at the far end of the arm.
(Take π to be 3)

a) 0.05 s
b) 300 m/s
Problem #7
