How to become a writer

M any gurus are teaching ‘How

classes for 30,000/- Rs to 1,00,000/- Rs.
They are fooling you.
I did many courses with such gurus. They are
not honest with their teaching. I found such
foolish gurus that when I started following
their ideas my accounts got block on various
platforms, including Facebook.

I found that those Gurus are only the

salesmen.
They tell you that ‘books are Engineered.’
They are misguiding you. Do not get trapped
by them. The book can not be engineered

certain level.)

Those so-called gurus misguide you, not to

write a good book, but to write a best-selling
book.

They have taken this quote from ‘Rich Dad

Poor Dad’. ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ was
popular due to MLM businesses in India in
the early nineties. The quote has different
parameters in that book.

Please follow a simple formula, write a good

book. Then as a result, it may be the best
seller for you.

For many days I was thinking about how a

book can be a best-selling book if it is a bad
written book?

In this book you will read the changing

fundamentals of marketing.

New writers will start to sell books on

Amazon or Flipkart. Buyers will buy your
book. On the other side, the e-com website
has a strategy, that buyers can return the

product within ten days.

If the book is not good, it will be a

boomerang on you. You will sell 100 books
and you will get the garbage back.

It is the truth with e-books also.

Google Books and Kindle Books has also

return facilities. So do not try to deceive your
readers.

As a writer, be honest. Write niche, cell

niche. Get good feedback. Get the
satisfaction.

In this book you will read how to write

Novel, a Text Book, Screen Play for feature
film, Screen Play for TV serials, Screen Play
for Web Series, Screen Play for Drama.

This book discusses about Writing Columns

How to become a writer

Module1:

Story, Novel (Fiction) writing

16 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Introduction:

Story writing is very easy. Everyone has

some experience about something in his or
her life.

It is wonderful to know you have written

many stories in your school days.

That was known as Essay writing.

“My first day in the school”,

17 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

“My Family”,

“A trip to a zoo”,

“My Pet”, etc.

At that time, you must have taken help from

your father or mother to complete your task.

You must have solved questions like ‘fill in

the blanks or complete the story’

“A crow was thirsty… Pot of water… deep

water… stones… fly.”

Then after you have grown up, in the eighth

standard, you started making stories while
answering the question papers. Lier Lier
everywhere... Then your teacher laughed at
your imagination and punished you with a
big Zero on your answer sheet.

Then in your college days while flirting with

girls (or boys) you must have narrated how
you will earn money, how you will be the

18 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

next millionaire, what are your plans about

life etc. etc.

In short, anyone who is lying or making

stories to prove himself or herself right is the
spark of a writer. Writers are freaky. They
are the creators of their world.

Writers are ‘God’ of their World.

The writer creates character gender, whether

the protagonist will be male or female. The
writer decides its age, what language the
character may speak, what clothes the
character may wear, in which part of the
world the character belongs, etc. The writer
decides what the character is thinking about
himself and the world. The writer may ask
the character to love or to take a divorce.

It’s fun, but it comes with the responsibility.

Responsibility towards the reader. The writer

is responsible to give the entertainment and
the philosophy of life.

19 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Even in the story is based on the facts, the

writer has to write in such a way that the
reader must feel it is happening in front of
him.

There are many branches of writing fiction.

1. Short story (some paragraphs)

2. Long story (four to five pages)

3. Short Novel (forty to hundred pages)

4. Novel (More than a hundred pages)

One can write any storyline in the above

formats.

If you want to be a good writer,

you must be a good reader.

A good writer must have a command of the

language, and the logic of the story.

20 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

You must read ‘not as a reader, but as a

writer’. While reading does not get involved
in the theme, but try to analyse everything,
and ask yourself what if... I write this...

Do not read ‘only’ great fiction. You may

lose confidence while reading great authors
that writing a book is not your cup of tea.

You must read third-class books also.

(do not spend much time on them.) Third-

class fiction gives you confidence, “yes, I
can write better than this author.”

You will find authors who have money to

publish a book but there is nothing in the
book. In any library, you will get thousands
of badly written books.

I also advise you to

start writing in your mother tongue.

Do not try to write in English as a beginner.

You must write what your brain thinks. If
21 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi
How to become a writer

you are thinking in your mother tongue, not

bad, go ahead with it.

The reason is, while writing, there might be

a gush of emotions you have to jot down fast
otherwise you have lost the thought. This can
be fast in your language. Then in the future,
you may translate your book.

Indian language scenario.

India has around thirty-four script writing

languages and two thousand eight hundred
colloquial (unwritten) languages.

The ancient languages are Malayalam,

Bengali, Marathi, Hindi, and Odia. Those
languages have a rich heritage of literature.
Language like Gujarati and Bhojpuri has no
ancient scripts, but yes, any writer can write
in colloquial language also.

Like in Marathi writers are writing in

Varhadi, Malavani, and Konkani languages.

22 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

At present, the readers might be fewer but

within the next few years, you might create
History in your language.

Write down whatever the stupid idea or story

on the paper.

Wait a minute, did I say ‘on the paper’? If

you are 40+ you may like the idea of writing
on the paper. When I started at the age of
forty six before eight years I was also writing
with pen and paper. Then It was difficult to
type in PC and laptop. So I develop the habit
to type while thinking.

You please also follow the same thing. Keep

pen and paper aside. There are few
advantages of working on PC.

First is Copy and paste. Second is search any

word or meaning or information online
within a second. Third, save paper, the
mother nature.

Ok.. Now let’s begin.

23 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Come fast, join the mission to create history.

You might be the next Premchand,
Shakespeare, or Leo Tolstoy...

24 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Creativity

How to create a plot

Novel or rather every story has the main plot.

First decide the genre. Whether your story

will be romantic, horror, thriller, comedy that
is known as genre. Someone may have tint of
everything. That is good but the main plot
must have perfect genre.

25 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Your novel may have one more sub-plot or

sometimes two subplots.

Please do not add more than three subplots

to your navel.

If you are writing a seven hundred plus pages

novel then only you can have four-five
subplots.

As a beginner I will advise, you not to have

any subplots in your novel. Sometimes
subplots are confusing if not crafted
carefully.

The subplot should not be contradictory to

the main plot. Until and unless it is too
necessary, do not add sub plot.

If you are still confused about the subplot, let

me explain.

Example:

26 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

A story of ‘a boy from a village dweller to

the city business tycoon’ is the main plot.

The subplot may be, when he is in the city

‘his brother or sister is having a love affair’,
or a poor life or he or she turns into a cruel
character.

Suppose the protagonist has met a rich man,

and a ‘rich man is telling his story’ to the
protagonist can be a subplot.

A subplot can be a parallel story or it may

reflect in a flashback. The writer must treat
the subplot as a subplot, not as the main plot.

Technically, Subplot should not have more

than thirty percent weightage in the novel.
The subplot should not divert the main plot
mood, rather it must support the main plot.

It's very important to remember that subplot

must be a little different from the main plot

27 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

or it will be monotonous for readers to read

same story again and again.

Example:

If a protagonist is toiling hard to earn money,

you can not have his friend’s story, toiling
hard to earn money. If the protagonist is
flirting with a girl, you can not have a subplot
of a friend or his boss flirting with a girl.

As a writer present something new.

Make it a habit to record

thoughts and ideas in your phone.

Mobile phone is extended part of modern

human brain. It is extended part of Human
body; it is not bad device. Use it for
betterment of your creativity. As soon as you
click some idea or read a story, record it.

Thoughts are invisible, they appear fast they

disappear fast, catch them quickly.

28 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

How to create characters and plot

Creating a character is a very vital part of any

story. The psychological parameters of
characters are very important.

The reader is not interested in the character’s

daily routine life, such as ‘he woke up. He
visits the washroom, and today he did not
feel pressure to potty. He flushed out after
finishing. Then he took toothpaste on the

29 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

brush. He brushes his teeth. Then he took

bath’… bla..bla.. bla...

Avoid unnecessary detailing of a character.

The reader is interested in what the character

is ‘thinking’ or ‘reacting’ to a particular
situation.

The classic example of characterization is

Lord Ram in Ramayana. Ramayana has full
family drama with emotional stress. He is the
prince but still for some unwanted situation
he is sent to exile. Then the story begins.

Your Central Character, the protagonist,

must follow three parameters.

30 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

What is the goal of your character?

Readers must be able to understand what is

the goal of your character. Why the
protagonist is taking a particular action or
thinking about a particular situation.
If readers fail to understand the goal of the
character, readers may lose interest to read
your story.

If you have a negative character, you must

give the goal to his grey shades. A strong
‘Why’ must be answered by you as a writer.

A protagonist must feel as a live character,

then it will touch heart of the reader.

Premchand, Shakespeare, Tolstoy and many

other legends are immortal because of their
immortal character sketch.

31 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

The logical actions of your character.

Whatever is happening in your plot must

have a logical base. If your characters start to
behave or act illogical then no one will read
it.

Example:
A good character suddenly kills someone, or
reacts very loud then it’s a confusing
situation.

Always remember the plotting and

characters of Mahabharata and Ramayana.
Those great epics have many characters,
each character has a perfect goal,
psychological parameters, reactions,
thinking, and strong logical philosophical
base, is the reason behind its immortality.

32 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

The achievement by the character.

Every character must have a task, or goal, to

achieve. Then, challenges to achieve it.
There must be achievement by each
character.

Every story must have The Perfect End. If

the writer fails to End any character’s goals
perfectly then the total story is a mess.

The reader must understand clearly what

happens with the protagonist. While writing,
you should not forget characters, you should
not introduce new characters frequently. Too
many characters are difficult to remember
for a reader.

33 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

How to dramatize a plot

Every plot must have a drama. Everyday life

is also full of drama. Everyone enjoys drama.
If two women or men are fighting on the
road, it will attract a huge crowd.

On TV, debate shows have more viewership

than plane news readings, because drama
attracts humans.

Your plot must have twists and turns.

The drama could be a family drama, social
drama, action-thriller drama, suspense
drama, emotional drama, or anything. While
plotting one has to dramatize the plane event.

Example:

(Its my experience, now I am not telling a

story..)

While traveling in a rural area of Bihar I saw

a funny situation. One sixty plus stout village
34 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi
How to write a book

man was looking at the driver carefully. He

was feeling very bad for the driver.

After around, one-hour time driver got down

for refreshments. Passengers also get down.
The bus was almost empty and I was
watching the painful guy from my seat.

He suddenly jumped into the driver's cabin

and started struggling with the gear rod, after
putting a lot of effort he was able to pull out
the gear rod.
After refreshments driver returned and saw
that the gear rod is removed. He was
shocked. The painful man told the driver
proudly that he was watching that the driver
was unable to pull out the rod, so it was taken
out by him…

One villager was arguing with the

‘conductor’ that he has put the wrong
signboard on the bus, so the bus should be
turned to the destination where it has started
from.

35 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Now, this normal situation can be

dramatized... like this.

“ Ramcharan was a good Shepheard. He was

Rambhakt and fully devoted to Lord Rama,
he always feels like Lord Hanuman. He
many times has a dream that he is Hanuman
serving Lord Rama and hence helping
everyone.

He never travels by vehicle.

One day a Hermit ordered him to fetch some
goods from the district place before sunset.
Ramcharan was worried because he had
never taken any vehicle in his life.

Early in the morning, he worshipped Lord

Rama and Hanuman. Asked for their
blessings. And started his journey.

He got the seat behind the driver.

36 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

In his life, he was watching any driver. Since

the road was hilly the driver was changing
gears now and then.

Ramcharan was feeling bad for the driver.

Being a very kind person, he tried to help the
driver, but the driver shout at him. So he sat
down.

After driving through the hills driver stopped

for refreshments. Ramcharan took the
chance, all the way he was thinking that the
driver is trying to pull out the standing rod,
but he is unable to do so. He jumped into the
driver’s cabin and started pulling out the gear
rod. Finally, he got the victory to pull out the
gear rod.

After the refreshments driver came back and

tried to start the bus but the gear rod was
broken.
Suddenly Ramcharan jumped in and told the
driver proudly,” Look, son, you are very
weak, you were unable to pull out the rod. I

37 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

was watching you that you want to pull it out

now and then. I helped you to pull out the
rod.”

Let’s expand it further as another example of

narration.

You can describe some other details in this

one-liner. You can write about the day, the
crowd, and the roads, without changing the
central idea of traveling. You can describe
the clothes, the condition of the bus, and the
body stature of your characters with the
drama. The language, of course, and many
other details like chewing tobacco, the man
shouting at other vehicles, etc.

While dramatizing one must know that it

should not be too lengthy, and that reader
must not lose interest to read. You should not
make the mistake to declare the suspense,
like, the man in pain was thinking to pull out
the gear rod, or the drunken man was
thinking to argue with the bus conductor, etc.

38 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Just try it, in your way and get feedback from

your friend.

[Now it is my style as a writer, you may

present it in a better way.]

It was a very hot summer. I was never been

into the interiors of Bihar.

The bus was very hot. I can see the

passengers, some were frightened, and some
were carrying hen and goat puppy. It was hell
for me. I was trying to gulp some water from
the bottle but the road was hilly so I was
unable to drink.

I was able to see an old stout man gazing at

the driver. I could guess he might be
traveling for the first time. I can see the pain
on his face. He was shouting abusive words
at passing vehicles, he might be the
shepherd.

39 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

I was feeling very tired. And thank god, the

driver took the brake.

The conductor shouted,” bus will stop for

five minutes only.” Passengers start to alight
slowly. Everyone was asking him,’ how
much time..?’

The last passenger asked him the same. He

shouted,” for the last half an hour I am telling
everyone that the halt is only for five
minutes.”
I laugh and relaxed in my seat. The cold wind
blew inside; I drank half of the water. I was
feeling dozy. Suddenly my nap was
disturbed by a strange noise.

From my seat, I was able to see the man in

pain was struggling with something in the
driver's cabin. I found he has plucked out the
gear rod.

After the refreshments, the driver grabs his

seat and found the gear rod, not in its place.

40 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

The village man showed the rod to the driver

in the mood of victory, “Look my son you
are very weak. So I pulled out the rod, I was
watching you, and you was unable to pull out
the rod. Now get it. Be strong like me.”

The driver fainted.

******

You can try to dramatize more, make two or

three parts of the drama. You can narrate as
if you are telling a story or you can use the
third person as a narrating style.
In the modern era, readers enjoy the first
person narrating style rather than the third
person.

The best examples of social drama are the

stories by Premchand.

41 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

How to select your language style of

writings

One has to keep writing a lot. You will

automatically find your style.

There is nothing like, I will adopt XYZ type

of writing style. Every writer has some
influence from some great writers. While
writing, one finds the style to narrate. It is a
natural process.

Adopt the style that you love the most.

Always try to find the style which you

command the most.

Effective Quotes

Tip: Make collections of good quotes, some

are available on Google for free. Collect
relevant quotes then use them effectively in
between your book. Readers enjoy good

42 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

quotes, but please remember, that it must be

relevant to the subject.

Ask Google, best quotations for life, student,

health or whatever is your subject. You may
ask for particular great thinker or
philosopher also.

Quotes are powerful tool in writing a book.

43 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

How to select a genre (Romantic,

Suspense, Action etc.) And how to
select characters

After selecting a plot, think about the

characters. Technically it is known as the
‘protagonist’. The protagonist is the central
character. It can be a man, a woman, a good
person, or a bad person.

The character must have a name. Always

remember to select a common name. Do not
Create an uncommon name or difficult name
or something supernatural name. The name
itself must suggest the characteristic of the
character.

Example:

In Hindi “Chameli bai” can be a name of a

female entertainer, not a good Housewife.

44 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Do not give mythological popular Gods and

Goddesses' names to a Villain. The reader
has sentiments towards his Mythological
hero.

You can not name a bad woman (prostitute)

as ‘Sita, Radha” etc.

The name itself suggests the age of the

character, the lifestyle, and the geographical
area he lives in.

Example:
“Gopal” can be the name of a village-
dwelling person, around forty-plus age.

“Jack” can not be the name of an Indian

villager, it must be from a metropolitan city.

“Dharmadas” can be a sixty-plus age-old

person, he can not be a “twenty” year-old
modern youngster.

45 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

“Muthu Swami” can be a South Indian

Character, “Bidyut Bhattacharya” can be a
Bengali Character.

“Sweety” can not be a 60-year-old village

woman.

The characterization is easy in every genre

except, Thriller.

Thriller needs maximum characters to divert

readers' attention on who is the culprit. The
name of the characters must be confusing.

The reason is while reading, readers also try

to find out the culprit.

The writer has the responsibility to confuse

the reader and keep the plot moving fast. (Do
not confuse actual characters)

After the name now, write what is the age of

the character, what is his language, and his
emotional level and thinking process of it!

46 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Follow the above formula for every

character.

As a beginner, you should not plot more than

two to three main characters, or five to six
supporting characters.

You have to plan everything clearly before

you start to write.

Use of Images

Use of images gives depth to your work. It

How to become a writer

How to select a perfect Title

Your novel must have a catching Title.

Readers must feel to read the novel before
going through it.

The Title of a Textbook is like: “History of

India”, “Chemical Reactions Engineering”

The Novel title should not be like the

textbook. It should not be very artistic, but it
must cover everything. The title part can be
the protagonist’s name.
Example:

Harry Potter, David Copperfield, etc

It can be descriptive like, “Blackmail” “One

Hundred Years of solitude” “Coward Killer”

I have written a novel, “Coward Killer” then

who will get attracted towards it?

48 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Definitely a reader who loves crime thrillers.

“Coward Killer” title can not have a social
drama, or the reader may feel, as deceived.

Every reader has his taste. According to his

taste, he will search the title. If you fail to
give a good title your novel may boomerang
on you.

There are many examples that after changing

the title readers start to read it.

The title of my novel was “The Rock” then

no one was reading it, I rename it as
“Blackmail” readers start to purchase the
novel like a hot cake.

Title of the book

The title of the book is not what you like, but

what readers are looking for. Your creation

49 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

is not for you, it must be from the reader’s

point of view.

The novel must have a small but catchy title.

Do not give lengthy big titles. The title must
sound good to pronounce. The title must be
mass appealing.

Subtitles to lessons

The subtitles must be descriptive, but not

disclose the suspense or readers may lose
interest to read further.

Example:

A novel is about the man who is a self-made

man, and in the final chapter I have given a
Sub title like “A sweet end”

Then readers may feel not to read further, as

the suspense or motivation has ended by the
writer himself.

50 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

For beginners, I will advise not to give

subtitles to the chapters. You may change
the topic by Dots or Stars like [… *** ]etc.

How to write grammatically correct

Do not worry about the grammar.

There is no grammar in any language.

If you are writing a novel, which has a

countryside canvas, then your characters will
follow the rough language.
They may use abusive words (as a part of
their communication) they may use many
phrases and local sayings. While narrating
you may narrate in Standard language or the
language adopted by the characters.

If you want to write grammatically correct

English, there are many applications to help
you. The most popular application is

51 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

“Grammarly” which is freely available. If

you are very serious about grammatical
mistakes then you may purchase the plan.
There are various other applications also,
you may “Google’ for it.

How to write a book

Think about Cover ideas

Everyone is judged by the style of clothes,

books are judged by its cover.

In the modern era, you have to sell books on

Amazon, Flipkart, Google Books, etc.

98% readers population is searching for

books on mobile phones, laptops, or PC.
Your book cover must have attractive color,
in Title and background.

Example:

Please search stress management books

written by me on Amazon. You will find the
perfect color combination and perfect
images according to the subject. A stress
management book has a lady in a saree
looking outside of the window and another
background is black.

53 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

There are professional book cover designers,

you may hire their service, or ask me, my son
is among the world's top cover designers. He
has an amazing color sense.

All my book covers are designed by him

There are two parameters for the colors.

When anyone looks at it on the mobile,
laptop, or PC screen those look vibrant, but
while printing, the colors are dull.

The vibrant colors on the PC screen must

have 60% opacity while printing. I have
made many experiments on the cover
printing process.

As one can see 183 books published by me.

The target of my life is to write more than
2000 books to create history.

Anyways, to study the international cover

ideas.

54 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Search for top novels from various countries

on Google or Amazon. Every country and
culture had different colors stuff, but still,
you will get the idea of how colors should be.

Novels are generally with mysterious

images, Textbooks are only with plain text.

Cover making according to targeted

audience

The cover should not only attract the targeted

audience but must have strong logic while
designing.

What you like is not important but what the

audience is looking for, is very important. I
have seen many writers designing the cover
with their ugly children, ugly family, or ugly
Guru with ugly cameras. Please avoid it.
One has to study world-class covers, before
designing them. Sit with the DTP designer,
spend at least three to four hours, create two-

1. Type setting

Internationally “Times New Roman” font is

accepted as print material.

Never use fancy or cursive fonts, fonts like

Arial, and Calibri should be avoided.

The standard size to read is 13 or 14 size. In

ancient days type setting was 11 but now due
to the excessive use of smartphones, laptop,
PC readers have less capacity to read small
fonts than 13.

How to adjust the Microsoft Office

visible.
Select ‘layout’.
Under layout, you can see Margins,
Orientation, Size, Columns, Indent,
Select ‘Size’ > select A5
Make sure that Indent, Spacing everything
as Zero level.

Adjust Font

In ‘Home’ you can adjust font size and style.

There are various fonts available on Google
for free, apart from the preloaded fonts.

I have a collection of Sixteen Thousand

Fonts. I will suggest not to keep more than
500 fonts, it will slow down your system.

60 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Integrating fonts is a very easy method. Just

follow the instructions for the downloaded
TTF file, and install the downloaded font.
Save TTF file in the C drive.

Adjust pages

Adjust every page to A5 size. Then every

page is linked with whatever you work for
until and unless you unlink the page or Break
the page link.

Under Layout, always select A5 size for a

paperback book, which is 14.8 x 21
centimetres.

Left and Right margins should be 3

centimetres. Top and bottom margins can be
2.54 centimetres.

iii. Adjust paragraphs

Under the tag ‘Home’ you can see, Font,

Header, footer

Header Footer is very tricky.

Method 1-

It comes under ‘Insert’. Find out the tab

Header then Type your header, select your
style, and font, and keep the size to a
maximum of 10.
In the footer select ‘Page numbers. Select
your style.

Method 2-

Click on blank space, one centimetre from

the top of the page or at the bottom of the
page.

Immediately Header Footer tab will get

activated. Now play with the given options.
Select all the options, where the Different
Odd-Even Page is important. After selecting
it you have to activate oddly and even page
numbers by writing numbers in it.

This gives you the choice to have a different

Header as the Title of the book in even
numbers and your name in the odd number
pages.

If you are a more technical person then you

can delink the header footer to give different
Headers according to your lessons.

But if you are not technical savvy do not go

for it.

64 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Select your paperback style

Always select A5 size for a paperback book,

which is 14.8 x 21 centimetres. Do not go for
any other odd sizes, as it will cost you more
while printing.

A5 is exactly half of A4 so there is no

wastage.

I have printed 183 books to date, so please

take my advice. Many new writers think their
books should be unique.

Yes, your book must be unique, but by

content, not by physical look.

The reason is, if you invest one lakh Rs to

print one thousand copies, in one book and if
you are unable to sell it, then it will be a
boomerang on your family. It is frustrating to
see books turning into scrap. Believe me, one
lakh Rs material may have 250 Rs cost as a
scrap.

Creating an e-book is a good idea. In

Marketing

Marketing is a very essential part of book

writing.

If you read ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ the author

says every now and then that my nook is the
best-selling book, it is ‘not the best book’,
but ‘best selling book’.

He is very honest about his book.

68 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Take my advice,

do not try to write a ‘best-selling book’,

Always try to write ‘honest’ book. No one

can write Best selling book, if it is badly
written book. When you write a good book it
becomes popular then as a result it is the
best-selling book.

The author of ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ was

already filthy rich, so writing a book was his
hobby. His book was popular due to MLM
business in India in the era of the nineties,
nothing great about it.

I know, as a writer you belong to a middle-

class family, do not have luxurious money to
spend on advertisement, and invest Ten lakh
INR in printing, like ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’
book.
Following the step-by-step slow process, you
may be able to earn good money.
How? Yes, I did it.

69 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Along with your job you can start to earn a

little amount and then accept it as your
passion then you can work as a full-time
writer, get retired from the job, and be
immortal.

You know what is the pain of life?

To make both ends meet!

There are thousands of writers, singers,

artists around us. But they are running to earn
money, they are bearing abusive treatment at
work place, because they have
responsibilities of their families.

They are talented but they have to leave

home at 7 am and come home at 10 pm. They
can not, even if they can.

Even God is helpless, to help such trapped

people.

How to write a book

What is ISBN code

If you ask me, do not go mad for the ISBN

code. It is good to have an ISBN code, but

it is not at all important to

have an ISBN code.

There are two-three reasons.

The Indian government has only one institute

to offer ISBN codes.

71 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

This institute has limited staff, they have to

read each book before evaluating it.

It takes 8 to 10 months to get the ISBN code.

Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency

www.isbn.gov.in website has simple steps to
follow. ISBN code is not required to sell
book, even online.

There are only 3.5% of books in India got

ISBN codes, every year Indians publish
eighty to eighty-five lakh books. An average
book has150 pages. 127,50,00,000 (127
crore pages to read, do they have staff to
read, No! so they have backlog of ten years.)

It is mainly for government papers, Ph.D.

thesis. Do not give importance to ISBN code.

Some agencies may demand one or two lakh

Rs. For ISBN but it is free, be aware of such
agents. In Amazon select category as
‘generic’ instead of ISBN.

How to write a book

Decide Price

Many gurus may misguide you that writing a

book is a business.

Ask me, honestly, create a beautiful book it

will give you royalty. Don’t write a book as
a business activity.

To write a book is for the betterment of your

personality and good for society. If you start

73 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

to write it as a business activity, you will get

trapped and no one will buy your book.

Price is a factor from a reader's point of view.

We are not staying in U.K. or U.S.A. we are
staying in India. One has to think about
oneself, if you are a reader, how much will
you spend for XYZ book?

As a beginner, an ‘A5’ paperback book

around 100 pages to 150 pages should start
the price at 130/-

A book around 200 pages to 250 pages

should have a price of 210/- Rs.

A book around 300 to 400 pages should have

a price of 280/- to 290/- Rs.

My Experience:

1. Show more price and give discount; that

is very attractive policy, readers enjoy
discounts. Online platforms like
Amazon shows maximum discounted
price books on the top.

74 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

2. Never print your first book more than

400 pages. It will cost you double as
you cross the limit of 400 pages.

3. If you want to sell on Amazon or

Flipkart, you have to add 12% to the
price as their fees. Then add 10% more
as packaging and handling charges.

4. Retail shopkeepers ask 30% to 40%

profit margin.

Amazon and Flipkart have a big problem of

‘the returns’. They have 10 days return
policy and 30 days return policy on clothes.

People read book within 10 days time and

return, they xerox it and return, they scan the
book and return.

There are big sharks in Amazon, Flipkart as

a seller in your category.

75 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

They order new books like mad. You will be

happy and start dreaming that you are going
to earn one crore rupees by end of the year,
but within the next week’s time, it will start
to return.

As a beginner, you will get frustrated. Your

books may be stolen by those sharks, your
books will be damaged, instead of returning
books, the fake reader will put scrap in the
return package.

You will have to fight on every front, with

amazon or Flipkart.

Some big competitors will start to give

negative remarks about the book on Amazon
and Flipkart. It will affect badly on your
selling activity. Then you have to respond
against negative response, if possible contact
the buyer, request him to change the remark.

Some buyers will place the order, once you

pack and courier, they will cancel it. Then
again, they will put the order again and

76 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

cancel it. It costs money for packaging and

make the product.

One has to have sustaining power, you

should not fear those sharks, you must keep
yourself fighting for at least six months then
everything will be smooth.

Many writers give up within

first ten returns.

As a beginner, you have to sell your book on

a no-profit no-loss basis. Once you are
famous as a writer then you may increase the
price to the next level.

The E-book price should be $ 1 or 99/- INR,

for whatever size of the book.

As e-book does not have any further

investment you can play low with the price.

Do not worry, no one will print and circulate

your book.

77 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

If you found your book is selling on the black

market, then you are lucky. Party for it.

Only that book is selling on the footpath

which is a smash hit. Do not get panic about
it. If you are a Film producer and your film
tickets are selling on the black market, means
the film is Super Hit.

There is one more market, that is Audiobook.

The audiobook market is still not opened in

India but it will open fast in India, get ready
for it.

78 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Where to get first book printed

Do not go to ‘any’ printing press. Book

printers are specialized printers. It is not
‘Only’ a printing activity but it has a binding
cutting activity. It is a laborious job so they
will ask to go for One Thousand copies.

An average book of around 100 pages will

cost approximately one lakh Rs. After
compromising on the quality, you may get it
printed in 80,000=00

79 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

The problem is, a huge investment to see

your first book. I wrote my first book before
27 years and I was able to see it before 6
years, as my family always guide me, what if
you use One lakh Rs. For the family, instead
of books; what if you unable to sell it.

Then How I have written and published 183

books. It could be in Crores investment and
needs a big space to stock the books.

I have a unique facility to make even one two

81 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Then at every step get the Support from the

Amazon team. Amazon has a wonderful
team to support. Creating a Catalogue is a
time-consuming process, but get through it.

For at least six months do not go for the

advertisement. After six months, you may
invest in advertisement. Amazon ads have a
powerful impact on selling books. Attend
many free webinars by the Amazon team,
then decide your strategy.

My Advice:

Do not hire any Amazon third-party

professionals. They will ruin your business.

They are paid to finish you as a competitor,

do not pay them to ruin you.

Keywords:

While creating a catalogue you have to write

Description, Keywords, Bullet points, etc.

82 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

It is very difficult for a beginner to find out

keywords. The best idea is to go to Google,
and type the subject of your book then
Google will suggest many words, those are
the keywords for you.

Log into Amazon and type the subject,

Amazon will suggest you the keywords.

Now make a description in such a way that

Keywords are included in it.

If you remember the exercise in Fifth

standard, there were some topics, and you
were supposed to fill up and expand the
story.

Example:

I am giving here practical example of one of

my descriptions.

The Keywords:

1. Hypnotism

How to become a writer

2. Practical Hypnotism with Tratak

3. practical Hypnotism
4. a class on Hypnotherapy.

15. to reprogram the subconscious mind
16. Worlds great hypnotist.
17. real tricks of hypnotism..
18. to quit cigarettes,
19. to quit liquor,
20. to quit tobacco

21. to develop confidence

27. how to hypnotize a woman.
28. how to hypnotize husband
29. vashikaran
30. hypnotism book for medical practitioners
31. How clinical hypnosis works

Now study, how I fabricate Keywords for

humans reading

Everyone is eager about hypnotism and how to do

Practical Hypnotism with Tratak. This book in Hindi
deals with practical Hypnotism. This book is actually a
syllabus of class of Hypnotherapy. Since from the ages
humanity is curious about What is hypnotism? How
Hypnotism is performed? What is covert hypnosis? (How
to get knowledge about Hypnotism? Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

to add, so they search Hypnosis therapist near me.

Hypnosis has power to restructure and reprogram

Hypnotism. For many, to quit cigarette, or to quit liquor,
or to quit tobacco is a game of life and death. To quit
cigarette, or to quit liquor, or to quit tobacco is possible
with hypnotism.

The frequency of Keywords allows Search

Engines to reflect your matter in media.
Please keep in mind humans should also find
it comfortable while reading it. Only putting
keywords many times will not solve the
purpose.

Do not give only Hindi Keywords, the

Search Engine can not search Hindi scripts.
Write (Hindi) like this.

Selling on Flipkart is the same as on

Example:

Flipkart will not allow you to change your

images, it will not allow you to change your
price, Title, etc. Whereas Amazon has given
free hand to the seller to change the Title,

If you made any mistake, delete the product

and go for new listings.

Flipkart is always in the number two

position, the reason is, ‘Wallmart’ has
purchased Flipkart for One lakh Crore INR,
but the deal has been pending for the last few
years, so the Flipkart team has lost
motivation to work. Anyways but you can
still keep your books on Flipkart.

Other platforms like Snapdeal, Meesho, Tata

Olx and Quikr deal with used products. Now

then Kindle and Google are the best options.

Kindle has the option of lending, and

circulating books, so one person buys it and
circulates for free. You can see the book read
by thousands of readers and the actual sales
are not more than 500 INR.

92 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

My Experience:

I closed down my account on Kindle as they

started lending and circulating my books on
their own. I calculated the revenue I got after
4 years, I spent more on the ads and was
unable to generate revenue in my bank
account, even after 183 books.

Whereas, I am very active on “Google Book

Partner Centre” which pays well. I am
very active on Smashwords and other
platforms.

How to sell on other e-book platforms

As mentioned above there are various e-book

platforms everywhere they ask to go for the
advertisement. This is painful because you
have to pay through a “Credit Card” and in
Dollars.

While paying through “Credit Card” be

careful, the best paying option is “Pioneer”,

Social Media Management &

Marketing

Manage social media is a subject of ‘Digital

Marketing.’ Though the purpose of your
writing may not be to earn money, definitely
your thoughts or the creation must reach to
maximum population.

To cover the maximum population, you have

to use social media, up to a certain level.

96 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Please remember that only likes on Facebook

or any social media do not mean you are a
good writer. If you are a beautiful girl you
may get likes, for the face not for the book.

Readers must purchase or read your books.

You must be able to convert your book into
a best-selling book.

To reach readers and to make a business of

it, are different concepts.

A businessman is interested only in selling

and making a profit.

A real writer charges the minimum price of

the book and sometimes donates to School
libraries, poor students who can not afford
the minimum price.

There must be a human touch to the selling

activity. At the same time do not give books
free, charge something as little as 20 Rs. For
other philanthropical activities.

97 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

I have an NGO, “Naya Savera” for

philanthropical activities among poor and
Adivasi students.

Use Facebook effectively

Facebook is a powerful medium to reach

maximum readers.

1. Change your profile as a writer. Facebook

uses your profile as a suggestive platform to
suggest to you more authors, books, readers
forums, etc.

2. Make a new business page.

3. Join readers or writers’ groups. (Not more

than four groups in twenty-four hours,
Facebook has a limit of Five. Do not go

aggressive. Do not be lusty to join many

groups, Facebook may ban your account.

4. Do not forget to give your contact details

to readers. If you are on Amazon, give the
link,

5. If possible, you may advertise your

business page on Facebook.

Use Linkedin effectively

To use Linkedin is a good idea again Change

your Profile, use maximum images and
create articles related to your book. This is a
good tool to attract Publishers, Translators,
and other professionals who need ghost-
writers.

iii. Use Youtube effectively

If you want to increase face value, use

YouTube. Read few pages for public.

Or ask other influencers to criticize your

book. They may charge some XYZ amount.
You have to give him a written script,
because he may not have time to read your
book. He is not a book critic he is the
YouTube star.

If he has 10,000 subscribers and if he creates

video for you you may reach 10,000 readers.

Do not forget to give your contact details or

Amazon link in video.

Use Blogger, WordPress, Quora

Blogger or WordPress allows you to put at

least few pages of your book.

You have to answer various questions, while

I get maximum queries from Quora. If you

want to advertise, invest money in Quora
than Facebook.

Facebook gives you popularity, where Quora

gives you the real business.

Please note that social media work is

addictive, you may get addictive to the social

media.

Use Quora effectively

Quora is more powerful than Facebook.

People use Facebook as entertainment.
Quora has the format of questions and the

answers. The questions are generated by the

general public and answered by anyone.

The best part is you can give a link to your

work or a website in Quora.

I fight with Quora to change many strict rules

at the beginning. They ban my account; they
suspended my account many times but
ultimately, they have changed their few
policies.

As a thinker, and writer you must contact and

write emails to where ever you feel it is
necessary. As a person, I used to keep
writing to Central Governments, the State
governments, and the top-level personalities.
You may not get credit for it; you may not
get money for it. But when you see some
impact of your thoughts, it gives you
satisfaction.

As a thinker, I sent many policy-making

ideas to the central government. Two ideas
were adopted by Central Government. One is

102 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

Lighthouse, a low-cost housing idea. And

another is the De-Monetisation idea. The
basic thought is from my brain.

I have sent a letter to Bandhan Bank and the

bank was able to save 38 crores Rs. Per year.

I sent a letter to Amazon, with the idea

Amazon earned 26000 Crore. I sent the idea
to the Nigerian and Somalian governments
regarding the water management system.
They implement a few of the ideas.

I do not expect money out of it. I do not get

enamored with it. The law of nature has
given you the brain to think and create good
ideas for humanity.

Do not expect that politicians will give you

any credit or money.

example is for the robots as well as the

Textbook writing

112 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

T extbook writing is a very easy task

than Novel writing.

The fun is that a Textbook does not need any

creativity, it needs organizing and
synchronizing the topics and knowledge you
have.

Example:

A science textbook for 5th std or tenth std or

graduation level may have Newton's laws.

No one can change newtons laws while

writing a textbook. No one can present
Newton's laws in poetry forms or any artistic

forms. The language will also be almost the

same in all Textbooks.

Textbooks are in huge demand but no one

can sell Text Books all the time. It has
limited time selling strength.

It is limited to the population of particular

students. If you have the best collection, you
may get the best price, if it is Engineering,
Law, or any specific subject.

are UPSC, then various state-level exams

Various exams like C.A., Banking is a big

market. Every competitive has many
subjects, you can choose any subject, you
command.

Language learning
‘Spoken English, Spanish, Chinese, French,

write books on it. Please do not just copy-

Physical fitness
Physical fitness is a general subject. Anyone
can write on it, But keep in mind that it may
need color pages. To add color pages is very
expensive. So the price may be at a higher
level. You must think about your targeted
audience.

Diet, Health, Naturopathy etc.

Due to fast life, health is declining fast so

eat, what is Naturopathy, and how to follow

nature's rules.

The health segment is also a fast-rising

segment, you can focus on it.

Collections of thoughts, quotes, short

stories
If you want fast recognition as a writer, you
do not want to toil hard, you do not want to
write anything. Then this segment is for you.

Start collecting thoughts, great quotes, or

short stories from here and there.
The quotes are the quotes with the name of
the great person. You do not have to add a
single word to it. Go on copy paste and that’s
it.

A classic example of a collection of small

stories is the Jack Canfield series of Chicken
Soup.

118 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

You may also collect small moral stories,

cultural stories, stories from Ramayana,
Bible, or any honey script. Stories from
Purana. No one may know about the writer
of that particular story. So there is no
question of copyright.

Motivational, Psychological Health

Motivational and Psychological Health has a
huge market. Multi-Level Marketing, Sales
team force like Insurance sector needs
motivational books on a large scale.

Example: Rich Dad Poor Dad book

promoted by many MLM companies. This
book talks only about how to sell and buy
properties.

Psychological health has a good market like

physical health.

Module 3:

Screenplay writings

123 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

S creenplay writing is not as easy

as writing a novel or a story or a textbook.

The screenplay is related to technology. It

is related to teamwork. Film-making
involves a lot of money.

A novel or Textbook is your direct creation.

You write it, you finish it. There is no one
‘you try to make happy’

Whereas many factors are involved in

Screenplay writing. The novel is one-time

124 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

creation. The screenplay must be passed by

the Director, the Production house, and the
superstar Hero.

You have to satisfy everyone. In India, we

have a star system, so the Hero must get
convinced, then the director or producer.

Novel creation is like creating a new world.

Your characters are your creations, but in a
screenplay, you have to obey many
instructions, by the director. You have to
make everyone happy.

There might be some spontaneous changes

at the shoot. You have to change the Scene.
Many times, the shooting is spontaneous,
an actor or director may change the idea or
get a new idea you have to write on it
instantly.

The canvas of Feature film is larger than the

life. You have the liberty to create the
screenplay. You may have long shots or
drone shots.

125 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

The TV serial has maximum close-ups. The

viewers are sitting in his drawing room with
the family so the TV serial has different
parameters while writing.

Web series is a mixture of TV serial and

Feature film. It is personal entertainment.
So one can have vulgar language, intimate
bed scenes, bloodshed, etc.

Writing a screenplay for Drama has many

limitations. As the writer has to create
everything on the stage, on that movement.
In drama, where no one has re-takes.

The technological limitations are in Stage

Drama. There are no close shots. A drama
is based on dialogues than showing actions.
The actor has to perform loud than films.

Let’s understand it one by one.

126 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Feature Film

How to select a subject

The writer has to decide which genre

attracts him. Try to understand your
strength.

If you like melodrama, romance, action, or

thriller please go for it. If you are not
convinced about your subject then you can
not convince the audience.

127 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Film producing houses are dedicated to a

particular genre.

Example:

V.Shantaram films were into social drama,

Yashraj films into Romantic subjects, BR
Chopada into suspense and family drama,
etc.

So the writer after finishing his work must

approach those producers who like the
subject genre most. Since it attracts huge
money no one will take a risk on a new
subject.

Example:

Dharma Productions will not take any risk

to make Horror movies. Or Rajshree films
will not make a war film.

The final line is, to select a subject which

you love the most.

128 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

How to create a plot, storyline

A storyline can be anything. You can select

a story from a newspaper headline,
something happening around you, Or a
short story listened to by you in childhood.
A story based on mythological characters
but in a modern scenario. Your storyline
can be adopted from any novel, story or
drama, etc.

129 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

You must have a strong storyline. The

treatment of the story is very important.

A love story is an old formula but how you

present the characters is important.

A revenge story is an age-old formula but it

needs new treatment to present to the
audience. Know your audience first. The
viewers have different personalities,
thoughts, professions, religious ideas, etc.
Despite that your storytelling must be so
convincing that everyone should love it.

Remember a golden rule,

Don’t Talk,

just Show.

If characters are talking and talking and

talking, no one will watch the film.
Minimum dialogues and maximum
happenings must be on screen.

How to write a scene

Here is another example of “The Spider

Man”

INT. BASEMENT - DAY

A single glistening strand of a
spider’s web bisects the BLACK FRAME.
As CLASSICAL MUSIC caresses our ears,
we see the strand criss-crossing others
in a perfect orb web. A spider-- black
with an intricate pattern-- drops INTO
FRAME. It gracefully gathers and weaves
the strands together.
The web and spider become small, a gray
mass against a basement ceiling corner.
The further BACK we go, the grimier
the scene becomes: peeling industrial
green paint, tangles of pipes and
electrical cable, harsh lighting.
We hear a low WHIR, the pitch growing
higher-- a cyclotron. The colossal
donut-shaped accelerator dominates the
basement lab. It’s a cylindrical,
metallic tube, suspended from the
ceiling, with wires and fixtures over
its length. Utilitarian, a patchwork
of technology from the 40s to the 80s,
with radioactivity warnings.

135 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

INT. EXPERIMENTAL CHAMBER - DAY

A steel and glass chamber is built
around and below a section of the
cyclotron. Metal shelves of equipment,
a large electrical transformer with
heavy cables leading to it from the
floor.
A three-fingered mechanical claw-- a
“waldo”-- thrusts INTO FRAME. Its
telescoping arm extends, lifts a tiny
one-gram cylinder from a rack of
standard weights on a shelf. Another
waldo holds a lead canister, a third
removes a sealed vial containing a
thick, muddy liquid. A fourth arm
reaches up to adjust a crystal focusing
cone, which juts out from the
cyclotron tube. The arm aims the cone
at a digital scale on a table in the
center of the room.
The four waldos are mounted on a panel
with a thick, clear pane above it.
Through the glass, a shadowy figure
manipulates the controls. A fibrous
BLUE-WHITE BEAM erupts from the cone,
focusing on the weight & the TITLES
END.

INT. CONTROL ROOM - DAY

The WHIR is muffled now, the MUSIC loud
from a stereo in the control room. A
video monitor shows a waldo placing the
gram weight on a scale; a digital read-
out beside the screen jumps from
0.000000 to 1.000000. A computer screen
displays irregular, colored patterns
describing the downward arcs of sub-
atomic particles. A digital clock:
8:57 AM. A half-eaten chili dog lies
on the control panel.
DR. OTTO OCTAVIUS (“DOC OCK”)
manipulates the waldo controls. In his
50s, Ock is broad, thickly-featured,
brooding, with unfashionably long
hair. He wears a stained sweatshirt,
protective goggles. Without
interrupting his concentration, he
lights a fresh cigarette from the butt
of the last, and takes a bite of the
chili dog.
INT. BASEMENT HALLWAY - DAY
ALEXANDER THORKEL and SOLOMON ROSOMOFF
(ROZ) enter from a flight of stairs.
Tall, thin, 40, Thorkel wears horn-
rimmed glasses and a Brooks Brothers
suit. Roz, a professor of
astrophysics, walks spryly despite his
75 years. The men head to the door at
the end of the hall: “CYCLOTRON,

How to become a writer

Now you must have got the idea of how to

convert a scene into a Script.

Imagine that you are telling a story to your

friend, if you can not tell a good story, you
won't be able to narrate it for anyone.

Do not try to give camera movements or

Editing ideas until and unless you know
about it.

The reason is directors, Cinematographer

everyone knows his job very well. You may
give the guidance but not necessary that
everyone will accept it. You may suggest a
close-up or long shot if it is necessary etc.

Think about any storyline visualize it and

write how you want to see it on the screen.

It’s like visualizing and learning to swim.

You can not learn by reading the only book.
You have to practice a lot. You have to
download various scripts from hit films.

156 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

You have to watch films from a learning

point of view.

When I attend many courses, I was feeling

that script writing is very difficult but when
I start to write, I found, it was very easy.

Creating Your First Script

Tips:

The age of the character is shown (for the

first time) in the bracket,

EXT/ INT means Exterior or Interior,

It is suitable to denote locations and scene

timings for outdoor locations.

If you have an idea about the atmosphere,

pleasant, horror, etc. you can mention it.

Let’s convert a village love story into a

screenplay.

157 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Storyline:

Sweety and Ramesh met on the riverside

rock and they are in deep love with each
other.

A scene of a normal love story:

Location: Village River

Ext: Evening, raining in August-Sawan

Action

Ramesh (20) is waiting for someone on

a big rock. He is restless. Slowly he
starts enjoying the rain drops.

A village girl, dancing legs, dancing

movements from the back.

Sweety (16) dancing with the rain

closes Ramesh’s eyes from behind.

RAMESH

Baat mat karo mujhase. Ek ghante se

bhig raha hu. Tumhare pyar me.

158 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

SWEETY

Achcha, tum to bol rahe the mere pyaar

me tum is nadi ko bhi par kar jaoge.

RAMESH

E pagal, mujhako tairana nahi aata.

SWEETY

Bas yahi hai tera pyaar?

Ramesh gets excited takes out his

shirt and jumps into the river.

Sweety gets terrified, she looks

around wish to shout for help, but
thinks about her secret love may get
expose.

Ramesh is sinking in the water asking

for her help.

Then she also jumps inside. Her big

Ghagara drowns with the water. Ramesh
holds her and starts laughing.

Sweety shows anger but gets melted in

Ramesh’s arms. Both starts to kiss
each other.

Somebody in the bushes watching them

secretly. **********

159 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

I can give many examples like this. You

have to just imagine the scene is happening
in front of you.

Here you have to go for industry standards.

You have to purchase (or get a crack
version of) “Final Draft”

You have to learn the technical parameters

of “Final Draft”. The software has given
video tutorial in it. Once you understood,
how to handle it, you will start to enjoy it.

I will suggest writing a script in Office

Words before using the software.

Many production houses demand script

only in “Final Draft”

160 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

How to select locations, according to

the storyline

The selected location depends on your

imagination. If you watch James Bond
movies, you will find some text on the
screen explaining where the story is taking
place.

161 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

You can select the location, whether the

story is happening in a village or city, or
overseas locations.

Then you have to select locations like

office, factory, on the plane, on the ship, or
at home. You have to select the lifestyle of
the character so that it could be a lavish flat,
an old building room, etc.

Along with the locations you may give tips

about the timings, whether it is morning,
evening or night. Do not mention the exact
time in the script.

How to write a book

How to write dialogue

Dialogue writing is an art. You must know

what kind of language the characters will
speak. The classic example is Munnabhai
MBBS.

How a rowdy will speak, how a doctor will

speak, how a comedy character will speak..
writer must know the language.

Many times heavy dialogs are written

163 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

according to the stars.

Example:

Dilip Kumar, Rajkumar starrer Film

“Saudagar”

Many times dialogs are written in a crispy

way.

Example:

Tezab

Sometimes dialogs are normal in a real-

time conversational manner. At that time
dubbing is also avoided, for the depth of the
film.

Example Shyam Benegal or Satyajit Roy

films

The all time classic example is “Sholey”.

The film has a perfect impact with
dialogues. The dialogue cassettes sold more
than the music cassettes.

How to write a book

How to create Drama

First, decide about the drama in your film.

An example is Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip
Kumar starrer film “Shakti”. The Drama
between son and father.

The family drama in Sunil Dutt Starer

“Khanadan”, the love triangle drama in Raj
Kapoor’s “Sangam” The emotional drama
in Sanjeev Kumar starrer “Koshish”

165 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Drama can be defined as the stress level

between two characters and their thinking
process.

In Ramayana King Dasharath is knowing to

send Rama to exile is not right, but he has
to send him as Kaikeyi demands it.

The emotional drama is always hit.

In Deewar, Shashi Kapoor knows Amitabh

is his brother, still, he has to fire at him as
Amitabh is a smuggler. That is known as
drama.

Viewers must feel right and wrong at the

same time. The moral values, the culture
and there could be many factors creating
drama.

In one of my scripts, a criminal boss is not

knowing, that his daughter is kidnapped by
his colleague asking the boss whether to kill
the girl, while the boss is enjoying the
holiday with his wife.

166 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

You can create drama for any situation.

Drama doesn’t mean fighting with each
other.

Drama is sometimes suspense also. The

viewers know but the characters are not
aware of the situation.

The lost and found formula is, Drama. The

Example is Rajkumar, Sunil Dutt Starrer
“Wakt”.

If Shyam Benegal is the director he will

shoot this for more than five to six minutes.

He may start with a long shot. Horiram is

returning with his bullocks. Some other
farmers are working. Dhaniya is busy with
cow dung. Then close ups of some thirsty
sparrows, stray dogs and barren land. Then
Horiram enters. The camera moves from
Horiram to Dhaniya. He will get every detail
in his story.

A normal director will have only two shots

to finish within few seconds time.

How to become a writer

Length of Feature film Screenplay

The idle length of the screenplay should be
60 pages to 80 pages.

But should not be more than 120 pages.

Screenplay should not be bound like a book;

it has to tag with brass buttons. It should file
properly. Keep one copy with you. Do not
take xerox. Always take good print outs
while presenting your work.
Before presenting, you must have SWA
membership.

Compensation of a script writer

The script must be registered with SWA.

Before signing a film, you must sign MOU.

A full package writer, means story,

screenplay, dialogue gives you 8 to 10% of
the total film production cost.

170 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

There is no parameter to measure how much

money they spent on the project, but a good
screen play writer may get Ten lakh to
Twenty-five lakh rs.
Film industry is not like a corporate world
where rules and regulations have perfect
laws to follow.

Since it is a world of dreams, people are

always in dreams, so they declare plans
which may turn as lies.

No one cares about no one. You will find

liars everywhere. Film industry moves on
moods and making others happy. It has stiff
competition. People are there to steal your
ideas, but still, it gives you unbelievable
money as well.

171 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

TV Serial

After the Feature Film, the TV industry

needs good screen play writers.

The film can run for two hours to two and

half hours.
TV serial episode runs for 14 to 22 minutes.
It can me 52 episodes to 500 episodes.

172 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Episode has three breaks. So you have to

write in such a way that viewers must get
attracted towards the story line.

TV serial has two three subjects. Love story,

family drama, relationship problems.
Mythological characters drama.

Public watch a feature film in dark.

So you can create any illusion. Public will

not run away, they are at your mercy for
three hours, because they have paid for the
comfort. No one disturbs anyone in the
theatre. No one can stop the film while
watching. As the only priority is to watch the
film, nothing else. No guests, no other
factors to disturb.

Public watch TV serial in the daylight.

Family members are moving here and there.
No one is serious about whatever is
happening on the screen.
Many times, one has to mute the voice.
Guests may enter. Due to this factor one has

173 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

to shut down the TV. TV can shut down

anytime, with compare to the film in theatre.

It reflects in the screenplay TV drama as

well. The shooting is always in full light. All
characters are with closeups or with close
shots. It has melodrama rather than action. It
has rare outdoor shooting.

Create a drama with relationships. No one is

interested in action on the TV screen.

Brief scenes are important in TV serial

screenplay. TV serials do not have a new
story. It is always the adoption of some hit
film or literature. Small twists and changes
create a TV serial idea.

In old times, episode was on air after one

week’s time, but now TV serials are
following Soap opera style, i.e. daily
episodes.

In TV serial, dialogues are more important

than other action.

174 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Even in the crime stories, drama is important.

It needs 5 to 6 pages per slot. And it needs 3
slots to complete the 22 min. episode.

The thumb rule is one minute per page that

means around 20 to 22 pages per episode.

Ninety percent of the times the episodes are

written on the floor, in the studio. The writer
has to consider availability of actors, and
write accordingly.

With many limitations one can understand

that TV serial gives more money than feature
film to the writer. In the feature film, once
you create the script, it may have small
changes. But in TV serial, producer need
writer every day. Until and unless dialogues
are written, no actor can deliver. This gives
writer, importance and money.

My Advice:

Instead of feature film, focus on TV industry.

One TV serial means, booked for at least
three years.

175 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Web Series

Web series is now more popular version of

entertainment due to the smart phone.

90% of the entertainment is personal. Web

series has the liberty of expressions. It may
be full of abusive words, intimate bed scenes,
and bloodsheds.

The sensor board is not as strict as TV serial

or films.

176 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Web series has a large audience beyond

languages. The dialogues are not important
in it, but the action is important. You might
have seen multiple languages option and the
lisping is matching.

Web series does not follow emotional drama

at large like TV serials. The anytime hits are
crime drama and the action. Horror,
suspense, thriller dramas are very popular
subjects in the Web series.
The episode is generally 50 minutes to 60
minutes in length, without any break. Every
episode needs at least 50 to 60 pages script.

Every producer needs at least 5 and

maximum 10 episodes of work from you.
That means you should be ready with 600
pages work.

It’s always good to write more and allow

director producer or any other team member
to edit work with suggestions.

177 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

The great lyricist Anand Bakshi Sahab was

known for this kind of professionalism.

If the producer asks for one song, he used to

present Twenty. Then the producer has to
choose one. He had the biggest lyric bank in
his stock.
The point is, you must think about the story,
what is next. You should not tell your
producer that, ‘sorry, I can not write further
or exhausted with the ideas’.

Many times, the director or producer is out to

hunt for an idea. You have to respect their
idea and expand it, does not matter how
stupid the idea is.

178 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Drama

To write a script for Drama is a very

challenging job. The limits of props,
costume, decoration, lights, backstage scene,
etc. has to consider.

You can not keep all characters sitting on

sofa and talking to each other. 90% of the
times characters are standing and moving
here and there on the stage. If the character
is on the stage but some other characters are

interacting with each other, then only the

character can sit in a chair or on the floor.

Lets take the example to create Screen

The story line is:

apani stri Dhaniya se kaha, ‘Gobar ko ukh
godane bhej dena. Mai na jane kab lautu.
Jara meri lathi de de’. Dhaniya ke dono hath
gobar se bhare the. Upale path kar aayi boli,
‘are kuch ras pan to karo’.

Drama Screenplay:
Dhaniya (52) is busy with cow dung. On
the wall.

Horiram (55) enters. He looks back. He

is moving here and there restlessly.

DHANIYA

Aaaj bailonko kuchh khane pine nahi

created in dialogues. The costume and

backstage may create the feel of the village,
you can not show the large canvas on stage.

Drama has two three subjects. The story

must play in-house. It can be a thriller,
horror, or social drama. No outdoor shooting
is possible. The characters must follow
psychological and logical parameters.

Since from the thousand years, humans are

attracted towards drama. Ramayana,
Mahabharata are evergreen drama materials.
Shakespeare, Kalidas, and many drama
writers have ‘made’ the humanity.

Drama needs attractive dialogues. You can

not create art film type average person
characters. You must have perfect language
to deliver the content.

It’s best way to watch and read Drama.

English, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil,
Malayalam languages have powerful

producer or director. No director or producer
can access to your work.

Whenever you approach to any producer, he

will ask for the SWA registration ID. You
have to produce your ID card at the time of
meeting, or else no one will entertain you.

In South India they have ‘Tollywood’ and

another organisation with whom you have to
register if you want to enter in South
Industry.

If you want to go to Hollywood, you have to

register your work in Hollywood. There are
four to five agencies to register your work.
They may charge from 25,000 to 1,00,000
INR per script.

You may try for the web series in Hollywood

rather than the Films. No one will gamble on
your idea as Hollywood films are 700 to
1000 crores INR. In budget.

How to write a book

How to sell your screenplay

To sell screen play is a big task. It’s not easy

to sell your screenplay to producers, the
reason is there are many over excited but
useless people who spoil the time.

You have to send emails; you have to send

mails; you have to visit producers’ offices.
You have to adopt many ideas to reach to the
production house.

187 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

In Hollywood they have many festive and

open competitions. If you want to participate
in that, it will put a big hole in your pocket.

It demands at least 4,000 to 5,000 INR feels.

If you participate in ten such competitions
you will already lose 50,000 INR.
There is no guarantee that your script will be
read and will get presented to any production
house. I believe some of the agencies might
be fake. They are only collecting money. I
have invested more than 60,000 till date but
it finishes with no results.

Then one of my friend introduced me to an

ex-Netfix employee who gave some tips.

In Mumbai there are some agencies but you

have to spend a lot of time with them. At the
end of the day, you do not know the
production house will entertain your script or
not.
The best part is Try and Try and Try
physically. You will get the results.

188 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

What is One liner and Bible of script

Before going through the Script, producers

ask for one liner and the bible.

One liner must be very powerful that within

one line the producer must get convinced to
invest multi millions on your idea or not.

One liner gives an idea about the genre and

canvas of the story.

Example:

How to write a book

What is the Bible

Bible is not The Holy Bible of Christianity.

It is a 5 to 6 pages document gives an idea to

not.

Your Bible should be perfect. It must have

followed things.

LOGLINE:

A story about psychological disorder

and crime of sophisticated middle-
class persons including God-man to
insurance agent involved in
international human & drug
trafficking, necrophilia with a strong
philosophical base.

ONE-SHEET

This is the story of criminals who have

a very normal social life, inspired by
crime news headlines.

Thousands of middle-class educated

families dream to earn quick money in
Mumbai, this leads them to criminal
activities. They justify their crime.
They are small-time business persons;

ultimately waste their life in vain.

They pretend to be kind-hearted,
socially sensitive, keeps a good name
among their relatives.

People look normal but they have

psychological disorders, perhaps they
are unaware of it. Human trafficking
in Kamathipura, drug supply among
youth, Italy, Gaza belt mafias Swiss
bank digital money hacking, mistaken
religious philosophy used in well-
settled Ashrams are part of our
society. Some of the activities weaved
beautifully in this epic, here.

The protagonist is a family man and

best-performing Insurance agent,
actually has a psychological disorder
like sadistic, cannibalism, and
necrophilia knows his elder daughter
is investing against him still he loves
family. He gets necrophilia attack for

daughter.

Ghosts' characters add a tint of horror

to this thriller drama.

This has a parallel plot of organized

criminals who have posh establishments
and businesses.
This is the story of malpractices and
money-making at Ashrams that happened
at Haryana, Gujarat. This story has a
social message also, makes the audience
stop and think.

I choose to write this story because

as a Psychological Counselor (Doctor)
I came across some cold-blooded
criminals who have a very normal
routine life. The plot has strong
entertainment potential as characters
crafted with complex behaviors.

It was disturbing to me to know that

religious guru's (Asharam Bapu Ashram,
Baba RamRahim ashram, Baba Rampal's

Ashram) turn into villains in society.

Therefore, I select 'boss of the
villains' as Baba, the religious guru.
A large part of society believes in
Ghosts (and sometimes enjoys its
presence) so sometimes ghosts also
appear in my story to give more depth
to the suspense. The appearance of
ghosts is like a fantasy of Dinosaurs
with humans.

Website Content writing

205 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

W ebsite content has two

parameters. First, it should be Search Engine

Friendly. Second, it should be for the
humans.

Most of the times websites are technical in

nature. Technical writings have to be precise
with the technical words and it must give
idea about the website.

The writer has to study other competitors’

websites. Study the style and keywords of
the subject.

Do not use keywords more than 40% of your

writings.
206 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi
How to write a book

Website writing is creative work but website

developers never advise any client that he
should go for professional writers. Your
website must have many articles explaining
the subject.

More and more Text

means high ranking chances.

Then it has Rich snippets, Google Ad

writing. And much more this subject in detail
known as SEO (Search Engine
Optimisation)

The detail SEO comes under Digital

Marketing, so book writers may not be much
interested in this topic. Interested person
should read my book on ‘Digital Marketing’
available on Amazon, Flipkart.

How to become a writer

Selecting subject

The Subject for website writing must be

relevant to the business it wants to represent.
One may think, it’s obvious.

Friends, there are some websites they write

about irrelevant things. I have seen one
restaurant website.

What do you expect from a restaurant

website? About the menu card, and services,
right?
208 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

It surprised me to see a love story of the

owner. How he left his Papa’s home. How he
met his lover, how he … blah..Bla..Bla..

A client searching for a restaurant is not

interested in any love story.

Do you think Google Search Engine will find

this website? No chance!

Collect information from the net

The writer must collect information from the
Net, analyse competitors’ websites.

The available information must be edited and

synchronise with the flow.

In such cases website takes advance payment

Writing articles (Columns) for

Newspapers

221 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Introduction:

Newspaper writings will give you

recognition as a thinker writer. But you have
to keep writing for years together to get paid
by the News Paper company. They are not
good pay master, the reason is to run the
newspaper is a minus-balance-sheet
business.

222 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

They do not pay but gives you popularity and

direct connectivity with your fans.

My Experience:

I was writing for Indian Express, The Times

Of India, Dainik Bhaskar and many regional
language newspapers. Out of which, only
The Times of India pays well.

Others do not pay or pay very little. I tried to

raise a voice against it then they stopped my
columns.

How to get job-work for newspapers.

Send letters to the Editors; express interest to

write for their newspaper.

Try to find the local newspaper first. They

will not pay you but at least you can get some
popularity, and some material to show other
news papers.

223 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

How to write catchy articles in the

newspaper language.
Please study the language of the Newspaper
it is different from colloquial language or
language in the textbook.

You have to adopt a formal language. It is

not about the news reporting but the articles.

Many times, Newspaper asks you to submit

your sample articles. You must have at least
two to three sample articles ready with you.
Those sample articles should not be more
than 3 pages, and not less than 1 page.

Preferably, the article must be printouts. Do

not submit hand written articles.

There are two reasons. First is if your article

is passed, then you have to provide soft copy
so that they can simply copy paste your
articles.

The second reason is its very unprofessional

to submit hand-written copy.

224 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

How to create a book of your articles,

as it is a copyright of Newspaper.

As you start to write in any newspaper, ask

them about the verbal contract of the
Copyright. If they pay you a big amount, that
means you have sold it and newspaper has
purchased it.

If they do not pay, then you have sold

nothing. They have paid nothing. If they
have not signed any MOU regarding articles,
generally no one signs any MOU, in India,
you are the owner of your words.

The copyright is still with you, do not worry.

Copyright has no importance in India. No

one will sue you for that, even if you breach
the contract of copyright.

To play on the safe side, you may change

some words or sentences, then there is no
copy right.

225 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

How to write an article?

You can sit with the editor. They may give

you a particular day, once in a week, and
limitations of the words. That will be the
regular column writing.

If you are writing irregularly, then if your

Put cuttings of the newspaper on your social

media channel. It will add the popularity.

Module 6:

Translations

227 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Selecting a subject

The Big Publishing house allots translations.

Write a sample of any book wish to translate.
Translate at least 3 pages, around 1,000
words.

Then send it to the publishing house. Please

remember not any publishing house but the
particular publishing house.

228 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

If possible, you can contact the original

writer. Due to social media, all writers’
contact information is easily available.

The publishing house may pay you a good

amount, but the writer may not pay you that
significant amount. But you can enjoy the
thrill to translate for the original author as he
will give you a little liberty while translating
the words.

You can use Google translator, or any other

paid software for translations, but those
translations are horrible.

Advice:

Do not use any translation software, or

Google Translator.

Sometimes it will be difficult to translate the

translated words.

Not understood….
“Sometimes it will be difficult to translate
the translated words.” It’s that horrible.

229 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

You can get some idea from the translators,

but can not rely on them. The translations
should be smooth.

I used to read many translations, many times

they translate word by word not
understanding the meaning of the sentence.

230 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Art to translate fiction

Fictions translations need your efforts to

understand the beauty of the language.

Hindi To English Examples:

Usane puchha,’Chaay loge?”

He asked, ‘will you take tea?’

This is the wrong translation. British person

will not be able to understand what do you
mean by ‘taking tea?’ (They visualise taking
231 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi
How to become a writer

‘tea bags’ or ‘powder’ from one place to

another place.)

It should be,

He asked,’ Would you like to have some

tea?”

Bachcha bola, “Mummy barish gir rahi hai,

bahar jaau?”

If you translate literally, it may be..

The child told, “Mom, rain is falling, shall I

go out?”

This is wrong. It should be..

Baby asked,” Mom, it’s raining. Shall I go

out?”
When someone translates from English to
Hindi, it may find like Christian missionary.

Christian missionaries started translations in

India first time. English to Hindi translations
to translate Holy scripts.
232 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi
How to write a book

Then it was carried forward by many

translators. Christian missionaries start their
work from Kerala, Pondicherry, i.e. south
India. Their translations are influenced by
the South Indian tone of Hindi.

Example:

Jesus heals people.

Yeshu ne logonko Changa kiya.

[Changa should be Thik kiya, Achcha kiya,

ilaaj kiya ]

Phrases and sayings are the beauty spots of

any language.

While translating, one has to understand the

phrases and sayings. No one can translate
phrases as it is.

233 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

Mistakes while translating

While translating, the big mistake can be

losing the central idea of a novel or article.
Some translations are very horrible that
normal readers find it difficult to understand.

Example:

Translations of Government gadgets,

amendments, forms, etc.

The translated word should be in today’s

language. Any language changes after the
234 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi
How to write a book

intervals of fifty years. If it is English, Hindi

or any language.

Try to remember your tenth or twelfth

standard language book. It has some 500
years old lessons, some were 200 years old,
some were 100 years old. The most difficult
was to understand 500 years old scripts even
if it was in the same textbook.

In today’s world, every language has

accepted 60% of English words. If anyone
tries to translate in a very pure language
without using English words, readers won’t
be able to understand your scripts.

Translation does not mean translating every

word. Translation means to make the
meaning of the script ‘understandable’.

235 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to become a writer

How to select a genre to translate

The translating writer must know his

strength and weaknesses.

It’s very difficult to translate text books. To

write text book is easy, but to translate Text
book in any language is very difficult.

The reason is the terminology. If you are not

aware of the terminology, you should not
translate.

Example:

236 | Dr. Ishwarbhai Joshi

How to write a book

Anyone can translate novel or fiction.

If one has to translate a Law book or

It is the truth with Website translations as

well. Anyone can not translate any Website,

There are two kinds of creativity.

One what you like to write. Another, what

your readers want to read.

It’s like making an Art fil or a Masala Film.

Art Film is your own satisfaction, only for
the class. Masala film is for the masses.

Example:

Satyajit Ray films vs Manamohan Desai

Films

You have to decide to follow the Satyajit Ray

formula or Manamohan Desai formula.

If I am your adviser, you should be like

Bimal Roy (Madhumati, Do bigha Zamin,
Devadas)

A commercial film with artistic touch. The

point I want to make is to create a book like
immortal classics but it should be the best
seller as well.

human civilisation, and world peace.

Writing books is not easy for everyone, only

selected wise humans can do this noble job.

You are the selected one by the universe.

If I can, anyone can. Join the mission to write

something everyday. Let’s make this world
