MULTIPLICATION OF MIXED NUMBERS

PROCEDURE
Mixed 1. Multiply the denominator 2. Add this product 3. Write this sum over
Numbers and the whole number. to the numerator. the denominator.

3 5 x 3 = 15 15 + 2 = 17 3

1 8x1=8 8 + 7 = 15 1
Writing a fraction for each mixed number is the first step in multiplying with
mixed numbers.
PROCEDURE To multiply with mixed numbers:
1. Write a fraction for each mixed number.
2. Multiply the fractions.
3. Write the answer in lowest terms.
EXAMPLES:

a) 8 x 3 b) 4 x 3

Solutions:

a) 8 x 3 = x b) 4 x 3 = x

= x = x

= =

= 24 = 14

APPLICATION

1. A carpenter is repairing the four legs of a stool. A piece of lumber 13 inches

long is needed for each leg. How many inches of lumber are needed for the
four legs?

2. A plank is 11 inches wide. A carpenter wishes to cut four strips each 2

inches wide. Can the carpenter cut the four strips from the plank?

3. Each board in a stack of roofing boards is inch thick. There are 32 boards
in the stack. How high is the stack?
APPLICATION : DISTANCE FORMULA
You can use a formula to find the distance traveled when you know the rate (speed)
and time.
Distance = rate x time or d = rt
EXAMPLE: Because of the rotation of the earth, all points on the equator are moving
eastward at a speed of 1660 kilometers per hour. How far does a point on the equator
travel in 5 hours?
SOLUTION: Use the distance formula
d = rt
= 1660 (5 )

= 1660 x

= 9130 A point on the equator travels 9130 meters in 5 hours.

EXERCISES
1. A baseball pitcher threw a ball that traveled at the rate of 46 meters per
second for second. How far did the ball travel?

2. A snail travels at a “snail’s pace” of 0.5 meters per hour. How many meters
does it travel in 8 hours?

3. A home run ball traveling at a rate of 135 feet per second was caught by a
fan 2 seconds after the batter hit the ball. How many feet did the ball travel?

4. The attention of a driver traveling at the rate of 75 feet per second (50 miles
per hour) wanders for second. How many feet does the car travel during
this time?
