Principle of Cohesion
Principle of Cohesion
CONTENT STANDARD The learner demonstrates understanding of how world literature and
other text types serve as sources of wisdom in expressing and resolving
conflicts among individuals, groups and nature; also how to use
evaluative reading, listening and viewing strategies, special speeches for
occasion, pronouns and structures of modification.
PERFORMANCE The learner skilfully delivers a speech for special occasion through
STANDARDS utilizing effective verbal and non-verbal strategies and ICT resources.
I. LEARNING A. (Knowledge) Expand ideas using the principles of cohesion
OBJECTIVES (cohesive devices).
B. (Skill) Arrange events in a paragraph using cohesive devices.
C. (Attitude) Express one’s concern for environmental protection and
preservation.
II. CONTENT Topic : COHESIVE DEVICES/GLOBAL WARMING
Integration: Science/EsP (caring for nature/environment), ICT (posting
an advocacy campaign through FB page) and Math (interpreting graphs)

D. Discussing new Coherence is aspect of writing which means the “sticking together” of
concepts and ideas. To make ideas stick together it uses cohesive devices (or words
practicing new skills or expression) that help connect logical ideas as in sentences.
(#1)
Activity: Expand the following sentences by using any of the cohesive
devices in the box.
HOWEVER AS A RESULT MOREOVER
BECAUSE IN THE SAME SO
MANNER
WHILE FOR THIS REASON IN ADDITION TO
E. Discussing new
concepts and
practicing new skills
(#2)
F. Developing mastery Combine the following sentences by filling in the correct cohesive
device.
1. Illegal logging is the unauthorized cutting of trees. Kaingin is the
burning of trees or of a forest. (while, on the other hand)
2. Many lives and properties were lost. Many people have not learned
the lesson. (still, yet)
3. Storm surge can put lives in danger. PAG-ASA should educate
people about its adverse effects. (therefore, thus)
4. Climate change becomes a cause of several disasters. It continues
to ruin the environment. (moreover, in addition)
5. Responsible citizenship also means caring for the environment.
Sooner or later, we will be the victims of our own negligence. (or,
otherwise)
G. Finding practical Problem-Based Learning (using Speaking Roulette)
application of
concepts and skills Each group will be asked to come up with a possible solution to the
in daily living following environmental problems. The first member of the group will
start stating the solution which will be expanded by the next member
until everybody has shared his/her answer. Students must use cohesive
devices in expanding ideas.
Group 1: Flooding
Group 2: Landslide
Group 3: Air Pollution
Group 4: Water Pollution
Group 5: Excessive Garbage

CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change is the catch-all term for the shift in worldwide
weather phenomena associated with an increase in global average temperature.
In addition, the temperatures have been going up around the world for many
decades. Relatively, reliable temperature records began in 1850 and our world
is now about one degree Celcius hotter that it was in the period between 1850
and 1900. Moreover, the change is even more visible over a shorter time period
– compared to average temperatures between 1961 and 1990, 2017 was 0.68
degrees warmer, while 2016 was 0.8 degrees warmer. Nevertheless, global
efforts are now focused on keeping temperatures from increasing more than
two degrees. Meanwhile, as temperature increase is referred to as global
warming, climate change is the term currently favoured by scientist as far as the
increase is concern.

*NOTE: Teachers do not need to go through all ten (10) parts in every lesson. Teachers need to ensure that the procedures of the lesson
lead to the achievement of the stated objectives
