1. Overview
In the previous exercises, the process of creating base data model and taxonomy model has been
explained. Now the Dataworks has a specific data model and the relevant entity types, attributes,
relationships, and mappings can be stored in the specified location. As the base has been prepared, it is
the time to build the reference data.
In this exercise, let us discuss the process of creating a reference data model, which is also known as the
look-up table. The Reference Data can be used to define the metadata in the platform, which helps in
governing and defining the boundaries of different attribute values such as Colors and Sizes. Reference
Data can be used as context whenever required to extend the attribution or relationships for master data
entities.
This exercise has been divided into two parts. In the first part of the exercise, the process of creating
Reference Data Model using an excel workbook is discussed. In the later part of the exercise, the process
of creating reference data in the Platform is discussed.
2. Objectives
By the end of this module, you will be able to understand:
How to create a Reference data model, and link this Reference data model with Base data model
3. Target Audiences
This module is designed for the following roles:
Business Administrator
System Administrator
4. Business Scenario
To create Reference data model, and linking the reference data model with the base data model follow the
below steps.
Step 1: Download the reference data model excel template form the platform.
Step 3: Update the LOV (list of values) data type with the new reference entity type.

Step 4: Import

All Rights for the reference entity types.
Step 5: Download the base data model and link with the reference data model.
The reference data model excel template consists of six different worksheets that enables the users to add
data into the platform. These sheets are explained below:
Now, let’s see the example to understand, the reference data. Here we have taken, the two reference
entity types color and size.
The color can be defined, with list of attribute values, color name by mapping the color attribute, into the
list of values tables, which contains respective color code, and value as shown in the table.
Similarly, you can define, the list size reference entity, as shown in this table.
Step 3: Go to the “Upload/Download Reference Data Domain Model” widget, and click on the
Download button.
Step 5: Once the job completes, click on the download option, to download and save the excel file on
your local desktop.
Step 6: Now open the downloaded file. This will open a Reference data model workbook. You will see
out-of-the-box data, in entities data worksheet, attribute data worksheet, and E-A-R Model worksheet.
Step 2: Select the “ENTITIES” sheet in the excel workbook and enter the desired entity type in the
“Name” column such as colour and sizes.
Step 3: Next select the “ATTRIBUTES” sheet in the excel workbook, and fill the attributes refcode,
refvalue in the NAME column. Fill the remaining columns DATA TYPE, DISPLAY NAME, GROUP,
and DISPLAY TYPE as shown here.
Step 4: Next select the “E-A-R Model” sheet in the excel workbook. In this sheet, you need to map the
reference entities with its corresponding attributes.

Step 5: Save the excel workbook and upload it into the platform.
Step 2: Go to the “Upload/Download Reference Data Domain Model” widget, click on the Upload
File, and upload the saved excel file.
Step 4: In the Task Details page, get confirmed the file successfully uploaded.
Step 5: Go to Reference Data Domain Model page, and refresh the “Model Summary” widget to see
the increment in count after the upload is complete. Click on “Entity Type – View Details” to view the
list of attributes created through reference data model workbook.
Follow the same step to view the attributes, and relationships model of the reference data.
We have successfully created the reference entity type in the platform. Now, we have to upload the actual
data for reference data for colors, and sizes reference entity types.
Step 2: Select the colors entity type from the dropdown. Click on Apply.
Step 4: All the attributes are displayed, which are mapped to reference data entities, in the reference data
model.
Result: The newly added color reference data, will appear in the Reference data library.
Step 2: Select the colors entity type from the dropdown. Click on Apply.
Step 6: In the Task Details page, click on download option, the excel template will successfully
downloads to your local directory.
Step 7: Open the downloaded excel file to add the Entities for colour and sizes types as shown here.
Step 2: Select the colors entity type from the dropdown. Click on Apply.
Step 5: Drag and drop the excel or click on upload button and select the excel file to upload the data.
Step 7: In the Task Detail page, confirm the excel sheet is uploaded successfully.
Step 8: Go back to Reference Data Library, you can view all the reference data created, for colors, and
sizes entity types.
By the end of this exercise, the following tasks has been completed:
For example, if a user selects “sizes” as a reference data, should see the list of sizes available in the
platform.
Follow the below given procedure to create a list of values: The sample filled thing domain data model is
given below:
You can view the attributes color, and size. These two attributes are set with, "List of values" in data
type column, and "reference list" in display type column.
In the reference data model, we had defined entity type, Colors and Sizes.
Now, our goal is to utilize, reference data model’s, entity type as a reference data, within the thing data
model.
Thing data model template file, provides a column called, "USES REFERENCE DATA".
This column will hold the value, of the entity type defined, in reference data model.
Use reference data – Ensure to list only the available reference data table such as colors and
sizes.
Reference data thumbnail – In this column, users can add image or logo URL corresponding to
the attribute.
Reference data title- It denotes the column name that the platform needs to pick the values from
and it would be then assigned to the attributes in the UI. Currently the platform is designed to use
the attribute that has been marked as “Is Entity External Name” to true.
Reference data subtitle – This is an additional column where the values can be assigned and
made available in the UI as an add-on information. You can use “||” as a delimiter if you want to
display multiple reference data attributes in the sub-title.
Step 3: Save the excel, and upload to the platform.
Step 2: Go to the “Upload/Download Base Model files” widget. You can upload the excel by dragging
and dropping the file or by clicking on the Upload file option and upload the file.
Step 4: In the task detail page, get confirm the file is successfully completed or not.
Step 6: In the Search Thing Domain page, open any SKU entity.
Note: Ensure you have selected the entity type, which has the attribute mapped to reference data.
Step 7: Insyndigo.com

Step 8: In the Entity Manage page, select the basic attributes group.
Step 9: Here we can see the attribute, color and size. Click on edit option.
Result: We can see the List of Values, for attributes color and size.
