Course Description
This course introduces the students to the three most common high-stakes English tests, namely:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Occupational English Test (OET), and Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which are required for non-native speakers (NNS) who wish to study, work
or immigrate to countries where English is the first language. Exercises and practice tests are given to help
students develop the communicative competence necessary to get them to a CEFR level C1.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. understand the CEFR and its significance to NNS* immigrants;
2. differentiate the three high-stakes English tests: IELTS, OET and TOEFL;
3. develop competencies in listening, reading, writing and speaking as the core skills that are assessed in
the aforementioned tests;
4. apply practical tips and strategies in taking these standardized tests;
5. communicate effectively with patients and health professionals in a hospital/clinical setting in
countries where English is the first language, using appropriate register, tone and lexis;
6. demonstrate good understanding of English in a range of clinical contexts;
7. accept the importance of these tests as a passport to success in one’s career overseas.

Unit I. Language Proficiency, Language 1. Demonstrate the ability to use language with a level of
Assessment, and the CEFR accuracy that transfers meaning in production and
comprehension.
2. Identify the assessment tools used to measure the language
proficiency of NNS* who wish to migrate to countries where
English is the first language (i.e. UK, Ireland, Australia, New
Zealand, USA and Canada).
3. Gain insight into the CEFR and recognize how it can have
a positive impact on learning and assessment.

Unit II. International English Language Listening


Testing System (IELTS) 1. Understand extended speech even when it is not clearly
structured and when relationships are only implied and not
signalled explicitly.

2. Understand long and complex descriptive, narrative and
argumentative texts.
3. Appreciate distinctions of style.
4. Understand specialised articles and longer instructions, even
when these do not relate to the field of Nursing.
Writing
5. Write descriptions accurately and relevantly using
appropriate style and format.
6. Convey ideas in clear, well-structured text, expressing points
of view at some length.
Speaking
7. Present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects
integrating sub-themes, developing particular points and
rounding off with an appropriate conclusion.

Unit III. Occupational English Test (OET) Listening


1. Follow and understand a range of health-related spoken
materials such as patient consultations and lectures.
Reading
2. Read and understand different types of text on health-
related subjects.
Writing
3. Write a letter specific to the Nursing profession, based on
typical workplace situations.
Speaking
4. Participate in role plays simulating workplace situations
taking the role as a healthcare professional.

Unit IV. Test of English as a Foreign Listening


Language (TOEFL) 1. Infer meaning from conversations and lectures (that take
place in academic settings) that may include difficult
vocabulary, abstract or complex ideas, complex sentence
structures, various uses of intonation, and a large amount
of information, possibly organized in complex ways.
Reading
2. Demonstrate the ability to understand lengthy passages
with complex sentences and paragraphs, difficult
vocabulary, as well as abstract and nuanced ideas that may
be presented in complex ways.
Writing
3. Produce clear, well-developed, and well-organized text
expressing an opinion on a controversial issue, and
supporting that opinion with appropriate details and
explanations in writing, demonstrating variety and range of
vocabulary and grammatical structures.
4. Select important information from multiple sources,
integrate it, and present it coherently and clearly in writing.

Speaking
5. Communicate fluently and effectively on a wide range of
topics with little difficulty, using intonation to support
meaning so that speech is generally easy to understand and
follow.
