2. Presentation
Alright class, what do you think is
our lesson for the day? - I think it will be all about the sun’s
effect to people.
That is right! Our lesson for the day
is all about the harmful effects of
sun’s heat and light to people.

The Sun emits ultraviolet radiation-

a kind of light that is not visible.

There are three kinds of ultraviolet

light.
Kindly read what’s shown on the
screen.

UVA has a long wavelength, and is

least damaging to us.

UVB & UVC have shorter

wavelengths and tend to burn us
rather than give us a tan.

Fortunately, for us, UVC, the most

damaging of the two types, is
completely filtered out by the
planet’s ozone layer

The sun affects some people more

than others. In particular, those with
fair or freckled skin. People with
dark hair and dark skin are less like
to suffer from sunburn. People with
black skin are likely to be not
affected by the sun and yellow and
brown skinned people are much
less likely to suffer than white
skinned people.

Long term exposure to sun causes

premature aging of the skin,
wrinkles, blotching, yellowing and
sunburn.

After repeated sunburn, cancer

areas can develop.

When the sun is highest in the sky,

its rays are strongest. The most
important thing is to avoid the mid-
day sun at all times.

What should you wear on a hot,

sunny day? At home? In school?

Wear something white to reflect the

heat and thin shirt to feel the least
heat possible.
If you are going to wear long
sleeves, wear very breathable
fabric, like cotton. At home, you can
also wear white shirts, or any thin
shirts, sandals or flip-flops.

How will you protect yourself from

the heat of the sun?
a) wearing appropriate clothing; b)
wearing headgears like hat to
protect your head from long
exposure to the sun's heat; c)
wearing sunglasses to cover your
eyes from extreme brightness of the
sun; d) using umbrella to shade not
only your head but your body from
too much exposure to the heat of
the sun;
and applying sunblock lotion on
your skin for soothing effect and
protection from too much heat.)
