THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Schools essential start on time and end on time, as well as all classes and additional activities.
Thomas Chandler Halliburton’s quotation: “Punctuality is the soul of business”, can be very
specifically functional to the business of schooling. Both teachers and learners must attempt for such an
attitude. When learners are punctual for the beginning of school and their classes, they can only benefit
Republic of South Africa, 2010:9) if a learner is registered at a school, the learner is now obliged to
attend school punctually and habitually. In South African schools, tardiness become a critical
discussion point. An article by equaleducation.org.za (2012) contains the following statistic here by

littoral village in Bulakan, Bulacan, unpunctuality and absenteeism are normal for Senior High School
students who have to stride through floods or yield a banca ride to and from school. Half
of Taliptip National High School are not attending the classes at the end of each week because they
have to take a banca ride to school for 25 pesos, and another ride back home for another 25 pesos, cost
that many parents feel are exorbitant. Those students came from
Seaside Sitio, Bunutan, Capol, Dapdap, Waway CApiz, Baluarte, Quinse, Panahamand Pinagkaipunan.
“Often, only 50% of pupils come to school on Thursday and Friday”, Priscilla Delos Reyes, School
Principal said. “The no. 1 problem has been the Banca fare of 50 pesos per child for the 30-to-45-
minute trip. According to Delos Reyes, the students also need to be in school so early in the day
because of lack of classrooms.” For example, students from grades 11 and 12 hold classes from 6:30
am to 11:40 am.
When parents are engaged in their children’s school lives, students have the home support and
knowledge they need to, not only finish their assignments but also develop a lifelong love of learning.
Teachers who focus on parent engagement often see a profound change in their classrooms. The more
parents involved in their children’s education, the better their entire class’s motivation, behavior and
grades become. Encouraging parent engagement is more than common courtesy. It is one of the best
ways to create a positive learning environment for every student. To create a community built on parent
– teacher relationships in your schools. Find out what parent engagement is and how to nurture it.
Rationale
The problem of tardiness among learners has always been a real dilemma for schools across the
provinces in Philippines. There is an expression used: “Filipino time” that not only confirms this
situation, but almost makes it permissible to be late! People who use this expression either refer to
someone being late or an event that is not starting on time. It’s an expression trying to say that
Filipinos and its inhabitants have their own time and if they are late, then so be it.
OBJECTIVES
This study will aim to answer some questions regarding the age old, yet still modern day issue the
education face, namely: The dilemma of chronic tardiness among South African scholastic learners.
This attitude does not only affect one race, one age group or one gender, but it is widespread in
South Africa. Many of the country’s leaders are guilty of in this. But it is a noticeable problem among
Looking at this issue, we are faced with some valid and frequently asked questions: What are the
main reasons for learners to be late for school? Does gender and age play any role among the late
comers? Does the socio-economic status of the parents play a part among tardy learners?
To try and answer these questions, a quick survey will be given to observed late comers and to

To try and answer these questions, a quick survey will be given to observed late comers and to
recorded serial late comers, over a period of two weeks. The collected data will be analyzed and made
easier to interpret and understand by means of presenting the data through percentages and
frequencies.
STATEMENT OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS AND SUB PROBLEMS
This study will aim to answer some questions regarding the age, old, yet still modern-day issue
education face, namely: Frequency of Tardiness and Level of Support of Parents among Senior High
School students.
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
1. Students – the result of this study will help the students to determine what will be the best way to do
for them not to come in school late. As a result, the student will be more focusing on learning.
2. Teachers – the result of this study may help the teachers to know what will be the needs of the
students for every day. As a result, the teachers may focus on students whose late comers.
3. Parents – the result of this study may help the parents to focus on their children and give enough
support to them on studying. As a result, parents will be more aware and focus on their children.

3. Does the socio – economic status of the parents play a part among tardy learners?
To try to answer these questions, a quick survey will be given to observed late comers and to
