''DESIGN AND THINKING''
REPORT

DESIGN THINKING: -
Design thinking is a process or strategy for solving problems by prioritizing the
consumer's requirements above everything else. It helps to engage a person in
several opportunities like experimenting and creating a prototype model,
gathering feedback from customers and redesigning the product using innovative
solutions.

1- EMPATHY

Empathize is the first stage of the design thinking process. Design teams conduct
research to get personal grasps of their users’ needs. They set aside assumptions
to obtain insights into the users’ world by observing and consulting with users.
This way, they can understand users’ experiences, motivations and problems.
There are some Empathize Tools:
 Assume a consumer’s mind-set
 Ask what- How- Why
 Empathy map
 Conduct interview with empathy
 Build empathy with analogies
 Use photo and video user-based studies
 Use personals photo and video journals
 Engage with extreme user
 Story share-customer

EMPATHY MAP

Does
Says

Think Feel
Says: Says quotes from what user says during interview.
For umbrella bag customer says that it is the emergence of new concept. Further,
it is a necessity for people. This hands-free umbrella will enhance the lives of
every individual who needs it. Imagine riding a bike under the sweltering heat of
sun or pouring rain, or fishing in a sunny afternoon. Imagine doing all that without
holding a umbrella, but still being able to protect yourself from the heat of the
sun or avoid getting drenched by the rain. Everyone needs to protect himself or
herself against excessive sun exposure, as it could be quite dangerous to one’s
health.

Does: Actions that users take during the experiment.

This hands-free umbrella just has a tube-shaped pouch for holding the umbrella.
An umbrella is just like a good friend. It’s right there when you need and waiting
the wings when you don’t. Whether it’s raining or shine. You just need the pull
the umbrella and carry on with your stuff. They are both dependable and practical.

Think: What users seems to think when experiencing new product.

The potential customers think the bag with a built-in umbrella would be very
handy especially for students who need to carry a lot of other stuff in hands while
going for lectures from one block to another. While interviewing we also came
across someone who loves trekking and she thought that this product will be an
asset while trekking or going for other adventures in scorching heat or on rainy
days.

Feels: The user’s emotional state like impatient:

This product makes the customer feel very relieved and appeased. Also, the
customer feels very excited as their necessities are fulfilled. Further even the
handicapped customers feel very elevated and satisfied with the product as now
they won’t require someone else’s assistance on rainy days to hold umbrella for
them.
2- DEFINE

The Define stage of Design Thinking first identifies the problem designers are
trying to solve. The define phase is all about implementing methods of
synthesizing raw data and creating a meaningful and usable body of knowledge.
From here, we create an actionable design problem statement.

Problem: Identify Your Users Core Challenge

 While commuting from one place to another when it is raining outside or

during the summer season, people find it
difficult to hold an umbrella along with
their phone and other things.

 Handicapped people need assistance of someone to hold an umbrella for them,

which makes them feel dependent and a
kind of burden on others.
 Trekking in rainy season becomes dangerous as one can lose their balance
while holding umbrella in one hand.

Expectations: Expectation states that what customers wants

A product which is easy to carry and one won’t need to hold the umbrella in hands
making it convenient for them to go around places whether it is raining outside
or the sun is too bright, independently.

3- IDEATE

What is ideation?
Ideation is the second stage of the design thinking process where participants in
a design thinking workshop come up with ideas on how to solve a specific user
problem. The design thinking process is made up of three phases: empathize,
ideate, and prototype
The ideation phase of design thinking is guided by the user problems that were
defined during the empathise phase. Ideation is about the exploration and
identification of potential solutions. Not all ideas will be viable solutions, and
that’s okay. The primary goal of ideation is to spark creativity and innovation.

Why is ideation important in design thinking?

Sometimes designers ask “what is the purpose of ideation?” The answer is that it
marks the transition between understanding the problems that users have and
generating solutions for these problems.
Ideation gives designers the license to let their minds run wild, question the status
quo, and look at problems from different angles. It also helps designers to
collaborate and create ground breaking solutions as a team.

Problem Faced?
When it comes down to umbrella-purchasing, we basically only have two choices:
the traditionally long and generally larger umbrellas — which tend to stretch
towards the more expensive side of things — and the small, easy-to-carry
retractable ones. In industry jargon: stick umbrellas and foldable umbrellas.

If you’re a woman with a habit of carrying a handbag around, opting for a one-
button umbrella seems like a logical decision to make as you’ll be able to put it
away with convenience with no fear of leaving it behind. But if you’re a man with
no handbag nor a habit of bringing a backpack with you, things get a little more
complicated.

Main Problem

1. They’re not windproof and break easily;

2. We can’t stop buying them because we always forget them somewhere;

3. They don’t really protect us from the rain effectively;

4. They can be difficult to open;

5. They get our floors wet;

6. They’re annoying to carry (keep that one in mind)

Solution
So, our group decided to solve all these problems and we came up with the idea
of hands free umbrella.
Nowadays, people are so dependent on technology like their smartphones or
tablets. So, more than ever people need hands-free umbrellas to allow them to do
what they need to do without bothering to hold their umbrellas,

An umbrella is designed to protect you from the rain. Nothing can cause bad hair
days or prevent you from getting soaking wet like an umbrella. An umbrella is
also designed to protect you from the harmful effects of the sun. The umbrella
could be considered the very first sunblock, invented solely to prevent sunburn
wrinkles and skin ageing. Umbrellas are also portable, lightweight and easily
transportable from place to place, as well as this they are pretty affordable. Of
course, prices can vary massively, but for a reliable, durable umbrella it can often
be purchased for less than a tenner. A pretty good investment should there be rain
forecasted.

The umbrellas are made of fine quality which provides you with enough space
for the air to circulate, thereby making you relieved of the humid situation. So,
now is the time that we get to discuss the advantages of having this hands free
rain umbrella which is quite time-saving, helps you save you on your money, and
reduces strain on your muscles.

This protects you from the harsh rays of the sun and gives you shadows. You can
keep your umbrella open by keeping it installed on the clamp. In this way, you can
keep the umbrella installed and hanging from the hooks of the umbrella holder.
Thus, you keep your hands free from the duty of holding an umbrella. Moreover,
these umbrellas are lightweight, which gives you a complete feel of
weightlessness.

4- PROTOTYPE

The product our group is creating is a “Hands-free Umbrella”. It is a bag which

will have a built in umbrella, which can be opened whenever required and one
doesn’t need to hold it.
Functioning

There are two methods of opening the umbrella

1. Either open it using the button which will be provided inside the bag.

5- TESTING

Desirability focuses on people. It’s what puts the “human” in human-centred

design. Your solution is desirable if it appeals to the needs, emotions and
behaviours of the people you target.
Feasibility is about technology. Is your design solution technically possible or
does it depend on a technology that’s yet to be invented (or good enough for
regular use)?
Viability is about whether your design solution works as a business. Is there an
appropriate business model behind your solution, or would it collapse after a few
years without investor or donor contributions? Design thinking is not about
making a profit, but good design solutions should be self-sustaining. That way,
you can continue to support and improve your solution way beyond the project
deadline.
Our product is desirable, feasible, viable and affordable.

INSPIRATION:
Walking through the streets of a bustling city in a rainy season, I often see such a
fragment: people have multi-task to do while holding an umbrella. Because of the
lack of concentration, they cannot handle the umbrella very well, causing some
accidents. So we began to think: Is the structure of the traditional umbrella not
suitable for the pace of modern life and lack of good user experience? Does the
traditional umbrella have the possibility of being partially disrupted?

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Should-brella is a disruptive and safer umbrella that adapts to the modern
lifestyle, liberating users' hands and improving the usage efficiency. Its shoulder
support structure changes umbrella's feature, increases stability and provides a
new ergonomic experience. The main focus of this project is simplifying the using
process so that user can use it naturally. This product was designed for people of
almost all ages who use the umbrella frequently and need to do many things when
using it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The main design of this umbrella is the handle. The umbrella handle is divided
into two parts. The lower part is similar to the traditional umbrella handle, which
is fixed. The upper half can be controlled by the thumb to rotate. It can be pushed
through the shoulder and rise to a specific support position, lock the user's
shoulder. Its shape is an irregular organic form which deduced from tests of
prototypes and the human body, stressing ergonomics. It can closely fit the shape
of people's shoulder to ensure the stability of sup.

8- Patent
A government-issued patent grants an inventor the sole authority to create, use,
and market his creation. This exclusive right is granted for a brief time of 20 years
from the filing date. The main goal is to preserve developed inventions and so
promote further advancements. Following steps are to be followed to file a patent
in India.

Step 1: Conceiving your Invention

For an innovator who wishes to move forward with their idea, this is the initial
step. It is crucial to gather as much data as you can. What is the invention's field,
what are the benefits, and how will it help improve currently available solutions
are some important issues that the inventor needs to consider. Not every
innovation qualifies as a patented idea. Subject matter that cannot be patented are
listed in Section 3 of the Patents Act. Therefore, the inventor must be certain that
the invention does not fall into any of those categories that are not patentable
while they are coming up with it.

Step 2: Patent Search and Drafting

The inventor must first clarify the invention before conducting a search for
patentability. This is crucial since it will clarify whether or not the invention is
novel. According to the Patents Act, all inventions must satisfy the novelty
requirements. After completing a thorough search and creating a patentability
report, the patentability opinion can be examined. An opinion about the
patentability of that invention may be given based on the results of the
patentability search and may be positive, negative, or neutral. The patentability
search determines the closest possible previous arts (known to the public) relevant
to the invention. However, it is strongly advised to conduct a patentability check
before simply filing the application.
Effective patent application drafting is the next action that comes after. The
application is divided into several sections, including the claims, background,
description, any drawings, abstract, and summary. To effectively disclose the
invention, each of these components must be carefully written. It is advised that
the application be drafted with the utmost attention and accuracy.

Step 3: Filing the Patent Application

The procedure actually begins here. The patent application can then be prepared
and submitted to the government patent office using Form 1 of the application
form. The receipt would have the patent application number on it. If the
innovation is still in its early stages, Form 2 can also be used to submit a
provisional patent application. A prior date of filing, which is important in the
field of patents, can be obtained by submitting a provisional application.
Additionally, one has 12 months to submit the entire specification. Startups and
small businesses must submit their patent applications using Form 28's
application form.
Step 4: Publication of the Application
The application is published once 18 months have passed since the date of filing
after the complete specification has been filed. There is no need for the applicant
to meet any unique requirements in order to be published. If the applicant wants
to request early publication before the 18-month period has passed, they must
submit Form 9 together with the required costs. The patent application is typically
published one month after an early publication request is made.

Step 5: Request for Examination

The applicant must request the patent office to examine the patent application
because, unlike the publication, the examination is not an automatic procedure.
According to Form 18, the standard request must be submitted within 48 months
of the application's filing date. In response to such a request, the controller assigns
the application to a patent examiner who reviews it for novelty, non-obviousness,
inventive step, and industrial applicability in order to determine whether it meets
the requirements for patentability. The examiner then provides the applicant with
the First Examination Report (FER). The applicant may also use Form 18A to
request expedited review of the application. Rule 24C- An applicant may submit
a Form 18A request for expedited examination along with the fee listed in the
first schedule only by electronic transmission properly authenticated within the
time frame specified in Rule 24B on any of the following grounds: (a) that India
has been designated as the appropriate International Searching Authority or
elected as an International Preliminary Examining Authority in the relevant
International Application; or (b) that the International Preliminary Examining
Authority has been designated as India.

Step 6: Respond to the Objections

The First Examination Report is where the applicant must react to the patent
office's objection. The objection expressed in the examination report is expected
to receive a formal response from the applicant. The applicant may attempt to
refute any objections by demonstrating the invention's patentability. You can ask
for a physical hearing or a video conference, as appropriate.

Step 7: Grant of Patent

The application would be submitted for a grant once it was determined to meet
all patentability conditions, after which the applicant would get the patent. A
patent grant is announced in the patent journal, which is occasionally published.
By sending a notice of opposition to the controller within a year of the date the
grant of patents was published, any party with an interest may file a post-grant
opposition. Any interested party may give notice of opposition to the Controller
in the prescribed manner on any of the grounds listed in Sections 25(2)(a) to (e)
of the Patents Act of 1970 at any time following the grant of a patent but before
the expiration of a period of one year from the date of publication of the grant of
a patent (k).
