Week 7

1. The document provides examples and steps for solving logarithmic equations and inequalities, and representing logarithmic functions through tables of values, graphs, and equations. 2. Techniques for solving logarithmic equations include rewriting in exponential form, using logarithmic properties, applying the one-to-one property, and using the zero factor property. Solving inequalities involves ensuring the logarithms are defined and that the inequality relationship is satisfied. 3. Representing logarithmic functions involves constructing tables of values for the function, plotting the points on a graph, and connecting them with a smooth curve. Multiplying or dividing the entire logarithmic function scales the corresponding y-values in the table and graph.

SOLVING LOGARITHMIC EQUATIONS

Techniques: Some strategies for solving logarithmic equations:
1. Rewriting to exponential form;
2. Using logarithmic properties;
3. Applying the one-to-one property of logarithmic functions;
4. The Zero Factor Property: If ab=0 , then a=0 or b=0

Example 1. Solve the following logarithmic equations to find the value of x .

a. log 4 (2 x )=log 4 10 b. log 3 ( 2 x−1 )=2

Solution: Solution:
log 4 (2 x )=log 4 10 log 3 ( 2 x−1 )=2
2 x=10 (one-to-one property) 2 x−1=3
2
(changing into exponential form)
x=5 2 x−1=9
Check: 5 is a solution since 2 x=10

1
log 4 (2 ∙ 5 )=log 4 (10) is defined. x=5
Check: 5 is a solution since
log 3 [ 2 (5 )−1 ] ¿ log 3 (9) is defined.

c. log 10 x 2=2
Solution:
log 10 x 2=2
2 2
x =10 (changing into exponential form)
2
x =100
2
x −100=0
( x +10 ) ( x −10 )=0
x=−10 , 10
Check: Both are solutions since log(−10)2 and log( 10)2 are defined.
SOLVING LOGARITHMIC INEQUALITIES
Example 1. Solve the logarithmic inequality log 3 ( 2 x−1 )> log 3 (x +2)
Solution:
Step 1 2 x−1>0 x +2>0
Ensure that the 2 x>1 x >−2
logarithms are defined 1
x>
2
1
Therefore, the answer should be greater than and −2
2
Step 2 log 3 ( 2 x−1 )> log 3 (x +2)
Ensure that the 2 x−1> x+ 2
inequality is satisfied x >3 (subtract x from both sides; add 1 to both sides)
∴ x>3
Hence, the solution is (3 ,+ ∞)

Step 1
Ensure that the
logarithms are
defined

Step 2

2
5. log 5 ( 2 x+1 ) > log 5 ( x+2)
