Statistics and Probability PETA

The group was asked to determine if the mean score on a statistics test was greater than 35, given a sample mean of 40.97, sample size of 30, and standard deviation of 8.16. Following the steps of finding the mean, deviations, summing the squared deviations, calculating variance and standard deviation, the z-score was calculated to be 6.02. Since this exceeds the critical value of 1.65, the null hypothesis that the mean is equal to 35 was rejected, meaning there is evidence that the true mean is greater than 35.

Grade 11 STEM 5: GROUP 8

PERFORMANCE

STATISTICS AND
PROBABILITY
FINALS
Scenario
The group 3 of Grade 11 STEM 5 assumed that the mean score of the
section's midterm summative test in statistics and probability is 32.
The group 3 asked 30 of their classmates and found out that their
average score is ____, with a standard deviation of ______. Using
the level of significance of 0.05 , is there a reason to conclude that
the mean score is greater than 35?

Finding the mean
In finding the mean, add up all the scores then divide them by the
number of scores

TOTAL: 321 422 486 = 1229/30 = 40.97

Step 2
find EACH SCORES
DEVIATION
To find each score's deviation, subtract the mean from (40.97) from
each score.
18 - 40.97 = -22.97 40 - 40.97 = -0.97 46 - 40.97 = 5.03

22 - 40.97 = -18.97 40 - 40.97 = -0.97 46 - 40.97 = 5.03

32 - 40.97 = -8.97 40 - 40.97 = -0.97 46 - 40.97 = 5.03

33 - 40.97 = -7.97 40 - 40.97 = -0.97 46 - 40.97 = 5.03

33 - 40.97 = -7.97 41 - 40.97 = -0.03 48 - 40.97 = 7.03

33 - 40.97 = -7.97 43 - 40.97 = 2.03 49 - 40.97 = 8.03

34 - 40.97 = -6.97 43 - 40.97 = 2.03 50 - 40.97 = 9.03

38 - 40.97 = -2.97 45 - 40.97 = 4.03 50 - 40.97 = 9.03

39 - 40.97 = -1.97 45 - 40.97 = 4.03 52 - 40.97 = 11.03

39 - 40.97 = -1.97 45 - 40.97 = 4.03 53 - 40.97 = 12.03

Step 3
Square each deviation
from the mean
Multiply each deviation from the mean by itself.

(-22.97)² = 527.62 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-18.97)² = 359.86 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-8.97)² = 80.46 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-7.97)² = 63.52 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-7.97)² = 63.52 (-0.03)² = 0.0009 (7.03)² = 49.42

(-7.97)² = 63.52 (2.03)² = 4.12 (8.03)² = 64.48

(-6.97)²= 48.58 (2.03)² = 4.12 (9.03)² = 81.54

(-2.97)²= 8.82 (4.03)² = 16.24 (9.03)² = 81.54

(-1.97)²= 3.88 (4.03)² = 16.24 (11.03)² = 121.66

(-1.97)²= 3.88 (4.03)² = 16.24 (12.03)² = 144.72

STEP 4
Find the sum of squares
Add up all of the squared deviations

(-22.97)² = 527.62 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-18.97)² = 359.86 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-8.97)² = 80.46 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-7.97)² = 63.52 (-0.97)² = 0.94 (5.03)² = 25.30

(-7.97)² = 63.52 (-0.03)² = 0.0009 (7.03)² = 49.42

(-7.97)² = 63.52 (2.03)² = 4.12 (8.03)² = 64.48

(-6.97)²= 48.58 (2.03)² = 4.12 (9.03)² = 81.54

(-2.97)²= 8.82 (4.03)² = 16.24 (9.03)² = 81.54

(-1.97)²= 3.88 (4.03)² = 16.24 (11.03)² = 121.66

(-1.97)²= 3.88 (4.03)² = 16.24 (12.03)² = 144.72

TOTAL 1,223.66 60.72 644.56 = 1928.94

Step 5 & 6
Finding the variance
Divide the sums of square by n-1, since we are working with the sample size of 30, we will use n-1 where n is equal to 30

1928.94 ÷ 30 - 1 = 1928.94 ÷ 29 = 66.52

Finding the square root of the
variance
To find the Standard Deviation, we take the square root of the variance

√ 66.52 = 8.16
Scenario GIVEN
The group 3 of Grade 11 STEM 5 assumed that
μ = 32
the mean score of the section's midterm
x̄ =40.97
summative test in statistics and probability is 32.
n = 30
The group 3 asked 30 of their classmates and

a = 0.05
found out that their average score is 40.97, with
c.l. = 95%
a standard deviation of 8.16. Using the level of
c.v. = 1.65
significance of 0.05 , is there a reason to
σ =8.16
conclude that the mean score is greater than 35?

Null and alternative hypothesis

Ho : The average score of the students of 11 STEM 5 in the midterm summative test
is equal to 35

Ha; The average score of the students of 11 STEM 5 in the midterm summative test
is greater than 35
Finding Z
Score
z = (x̄ - μ) √n
σ

z = (40.97 - 32) √30

8.16
z = 6.02
GRAPH

z = 6.02

C.v. 1.65
DECISION

Since the computed or test value falls within the rejection region, then we
will reject the null hypothesis.

Conclusion

There is enough evidence to warrant the rejection of the null hypothesis

whose mean is 35.
So, there is significant difference between the sample mean and population
mean. Therefore the claim is not true.
