PowerTest Basic Concept
3. Setup
22
PowerTest Basic Concept
Voltage (LL): Here we need to give the nominal secondary voltage of PT which is connected to the
relay voltage input. If we know the Phase-Neutral voltage V(LN) we can get the Phase-Phase voltage
V(LL) with the following calculation.
V ( LN ) = V ( LL) / 3
Current: Here we need to give the nominal secondary current of CT which is connected to the relay
current input.
Debounce time: This time will be used to filter the bouncing of output contact of the relay under test.
23
PowerTest Basic Concept
Example:
In above example the relay contact is experiencing bouncing process. The duration of T1-T4 is all less
than 3ms. So the T1-T4 bouncing will not be sensed by our test software. The T5 sensed by the test
software because it’s duration is longer than 3ms.
By default we set 3ms here. Customer needs to make necessary modification if this setting cannot
meet the test requirement.
The setting range is 0-25ms
When test is over we will consider this debounce time in our tripping time calculation So that no extra
error will be added to tripping time result.
Model: The PowerTest software can be used by different model of PONOVO relay test sets.
Run QuickTest(4V,3I), the model can be identified automatically, even if you choose incorrect model
here.
Set Com: Here we need to define the communication port of the relay test set. By default Ethernet will
be set here.
24
PowerTest Basic Concept
Set Type: All of PONOVO kits output analog except PWF serial digital relay testers.
PWF series digital relay tester only outputs digital signals.
25
PowerTest Basic Concept
Note: GOOSE Subscription and publish are optional, and should be ordered separately.
The tester has to subscribe GOOSE information when it receives the tested relays’ GOOSE signal. The
GOOSE can subscribe some information under the MAC address.
When subscribing, the following specifications have to be set: 1) GOOSE control reference; 2) GOOSE
ID; 3) Application ID;4) MAC Address, or only MAC Address is set to receive GOOSE information.
Map GOOSE data such as the data for tripping signal to the “Binary Input” on the tester. When the
tester receives GOOSE information, the change of information status will be reflected on the related
binary input. The testing software will judge the operation status according to the binary situation.
“Data SB.” means the sequence of the Dataset of the testing data. The number begins with the above
picture GOOSE Subscription includes manual setting and auto setting.
Manual setting
If there are no setting documents of the tested relays, it needs manual setting.
1) Get GOOSE configuration information by capturing tool such as MMS ETHEREAL and input it to
the related configuration frame.
2) Map by GOOSE data and binary: Import Data SB, select the required item and click Map
26
PowerTest Basic Concept
Automatic setting
Click SCL File ○3 in the GOOSE Subscription interface; Open the tested relays’ SCL (SCD, ICD, and
CID) setting documents. According to the software configuration interface, the substation binary
information can be subscribed, and the GOOSE information (GOOSE control reference, GOOSE ID,
Application ID, MAC Address) is set automatically.
27
PowerTest Basic Concept
28
PowerTest Basic Concept
The tester can also simulate other intelligent device to publish GOOSE information. For example,
if it is going to test the reclosing time, the tester has to simulate intelligent operation box to
publish GOOSE signal of circuit breaker to meet the reclosing requirements.
GOOSE information will be transmitted in substation by multicasting. When receiving GOOSE
information, it has to confirm if the GOOSE parameter is relative to the subscribed parameter.
The GOOSE parameter and GOOSE Data structures must comply with the configuration of the
relays.
NdsCom: This MMS component represents the IEC 61850-7-2 attribute of NdsCom.
timeAllowedtoLive: the parameter informs subscribers of how long to wait for the next
repetition of the message
Dataset: The ACSI DataSet shall be mapped to a MMS NamedVariableList object. If the
DataSet is within a logical node, then the name of the NamedVariableList object shall be
constructed by concatenating logical node name and DataSet name separated by a “$”
character. A DataSetRef appearing within an IEC 61850-7-2 data object shall be mapped to a
MMS variable length VISIBLE-STRING
29
PowerTest Basic Concept
Note: More details about the IEC61850 GOOSE can be referred in protocol IEC61850-8-1.
There are six kinds of editable data in GOOSE publication data: BOOLEAN, Unsigned Integer,
UTCTime, BitString, Float and dual-position remote signal, shown in below table.
The two ways of getting GOOSE parameter and GOOSE Dataset structure:
1) Provided by protection device manufacture or substation.
2) Getting by capturing GOOSE document (These GOOSE message are sent by other intelligent
device. The device may be other protective device or intelligent operation box.)

Manual setting
Manual setting includes manual setting GOOSE parameter and GOOSE publish data. We take
reclosing time as an example.
In order to get GOOSE configuration parameter and GOOSE Dataset, MMS Ethereal tool can be used
to get GOOSE message sent by intelligent operation box. If the GOOSE interface is electricity interface
such as RJ45, the wiring diagram is the below figure.
The captured GOOSE message is shown in below figure. It clearly shows the GOOSE parameter and
data system (16 BOOLEAN style data).
Data
33
PowerTest Basic Concept
Simulate intelligent operation box to send circuit breaker position signal (Suppose the breaker is
closed.)
It is known from the message of intelligent operation box that it sends out 16 BLOOEAN type data, and
the first data is the breaker position signal from the relay user manual (True means that the breaker is
closed. False means it is opened.) Other 15 signals also have specified meaning. To be short, all of
them are set as “False”. See the edited data in below figure.
34

Note:
The SMV is available only for relay tester PWF.
Please refer to the instruction for output form of SMV in User Manual-IEC61850-EN.
35

3.2. Aux DC
Here we can set the Auxiliary DC and give power supply to the test object.
The auxiliary DC voltage will be generated at the moment we start the test and will remain active
when we change from test module to test module.
We can also set the auxiliary DC in the test page by selecting AuxDC in Settings of drop-down menu
Drag the cursor to the setting position and click Set to confirm the option.
36
PowerTest Basic Concept
To stop the auxiliary DC output we need to enter into the above setting page and set drag the cursor to
OFF position.
37
PowerTest Basic Concept
3.3. Binary
Here we can set binary input (potential free or threshold and power level) and high power.
For relay test set with adjustable threshold we need to configure the binary input characteristic and/or
threshold here.
Potential Free
For potential free contact customer needs to select the potential free box for the binary input to be used.
In that case the setting for threshold will be prohibited.
Threshold
For potential contact customer needs to set the threshold here.
The threshold is the point where potential contact changes from high status to low status or from low
status to high status.
For example, we can define the open status of dry contact as the closed status in the software, or vice
versa.
A/1 means binary close is for logic close.
B/2 means binary open is for logic close.
38
PowerTest Basic Concept
For potential contact customer can associate its actual status with that to be displayed in the software.
Example: we can define the high status of potential contact as the closed status in the software, or vice
versa.
A/1 means close status at low level.
B/2 means close status at high level.
Suppose the potential contact has a threshold of 90V. Below 90V the potential contact is to be regarded
as closed status in the software. When the contact status changes the voltage applied to the binary
input will jump to 220V. We can set any one of the 8 binary inputs. In this example we are going to set
binary input A/1.
Note: We can increase the threshold setting to avoid possible electromagnetic noise at the site. For
example we can set 110V in this example
In the example above the low status voltage is 90V, lower than the threshold setting of 110V. When
potential status changes the voltage will jump to 220V and this status will be regarded as open status in
the software.
The AC signal can be injected in the binary input, but the triggering voltage should be set based on the
peak value.
Example: when the triggered AC voltage is 220V, the required value is 110*1.4142=155.56V. Please
type in trigger voltage 115V.
Considering the error, the triggering voltage is suggested to be decreased by 10% to avoid the
mal-function. For example: in the DC 110V, the injected voltage is 108V that is normal in the protection
system, but in the kits, it does not meet the trigger voltage and not trigger.

GPS: Test state will be switched to the next one if GPS pulse signal is received. GPS signal trigger
condition means the end of the current state (after output 50ms) and begin of next state.
GPS is usually used in the ends of line differential protection to make online test. It requires the current
as 0 before synchronization output. If the GPS is set as the first state (before fault), there should not be
current output. If the first state has current output, it will make the first state protection trip since the
outputs of both sides is not synchronized.
Example:
The line differential protection is made by simulating phase A fault in State Sequence. The following is
the parameter setting.
It is waveform output.
107
PowerTest Basic Concept
From the waveform, there is a 50mS state waveform output after receiving GPS signals. The waveform
is synchronized at both ends at this time.
108
PowerTest Basic Concept
The binary inputs will be used to sense the relay operation during the test.
Properly configure the binary input is important for successful relay test.
The selection of binary input type, potential free or potential as well as the setting of threshold for
potential contact, can be found on 3.3
In the test module what we do is to configure the logic combination of binary input and decide which
one will be used to sense the relay operation.
We can also modify these names according to our own wish in the column of Display Name
For the selected binary inputs we can configure them as OR logic or AND logic.
109
PowerTest Basic Concept
OR logic
If anyone of the selected binary input meets the trigger condition, the present test will be terminated.
In above example binary 1 and 2 are defined as OR logic. Any trigger operation of binary 1 or 2 will
terminate the test.
AND logic
If all of the selected binary input meet the trigger condition, the present test will be terminated.
In above example binary 1 and 2 are defined as AND logic. Only when both of them meet the trigger
condition then the test will be terminated.
Trigger on Overload
The test will be triggered if the output overloads

Pulse ramp
The typical pulse ramping process is as follows
t1: relay prepare time or reset time. This time will appear only once during the whole test process
t2: relay prefault time. This time will be applied each time when we give the next shot. For pulse
ramp this t2 is also known as wait time
A: Start value from where the selected variable will ramp.
B: End value at the point the test process will terminate
C: Step value
D: Step time
Linear ramp
The typical linear ramping process is as follows
t1: relay prepare time or reset time. This time will appear only once during the whole test process
A: Start value from where the selected quantity will ramp.
B: End value at that point test process will terminate
C: Step value
D: Step time,
for stepping up, it is up step time
for stepping down, it is down step time
Note 1: In Pulse ramp mode if we set prefault time as zero it will become linear ramp
Note 2: In the group setting page we can set the prefault time/voltage/current, etc

Configure channels
In Channel A drop-down selection box we can view all voltage channels from the COMTRADE file and
we need to assign one voltage from the list to the Va output of our test set.
96
PowerTest Basic
Two channels can be combined together to get a new output. This happens when we need to get the
voltage which is the vector summation from two voltage channels.
Example
• • •
I a ' = ( I a − I b) / 3
• • •
I b' = ( I b − I c ) / 3
• • •
I c' = ( I c − I a) / 3
In case the recorded data is for the primary side we need to set the ratio for PT and CT.
Here we can see the maximum voltage and current for this COMTRADE file. Proper setting of PT and
CT ratio will avoid them exceeding the available output range of the test set in use.
T1 and t2 indicate the peak values at the position for cursor 1 and cursor 2. dt indicates the time
difference between t1 and t2.

Search Mode
Here we define the search mode for getting Id tripping point under each Ir setting.
CT starpoint
Here we define the direction of CT.
Normally we can determine the direction by looking at the bias equation in relay instruction manual
62
PowerTest Protection
Example:
Equation Id=IA+IB indicates that CT direction is toward the protective device. Thus we need to select
tow.prot.obj
Example:
Equation Id=IA-IB indicates that CT direction is toward the transmission line. Thus we need to select

Bias. Equ.
Here we select the equation which defines Ir/Id characteristic. This equation is available from relay
instruction manual.
K1, K2
They are bias quantities in the bias equation and can be found in relay instruction manual
Test Phase
Here we can define to test only one phase or to test three phases at the same time.
A, B, C only one phase fault will be tested
ABC 3 phase fault will be tested.
AB, BC, CA phase-phase fault will be tested
Resolution
This setting is related to Search Mode selection.
For dichotomic mode this resolution setting will be used to assess the current tripping point. If the
difference between the output value of the current tripping point and the value of the last un-tripping
point is less than this setting then the current tripping point will be determined.
For linear mode this resolution indicates the minimum step can be set.
Note:
We can set a bigger resolution to reduce the test time. But this may bring bigger error in the test result.

The following diagram indicates this test process (Especially for under-frequency)
128
PowerTest Protection
Df/dt
This setting should be lower than the actual relay df/dt setting in order to make relay trip.
Fre. Stop
This value should be lower/ higher than the Trip freq. setting in group setting page.
Note: When the normal frequency is higher than Fre. Stop value, it is under-frequency, the frequency
will decrease, or vice versa over-frequency, it will increase.
Hold time
Step duration which should be longer than the actual relay tripping time setting.
Frequency will start to decrease/ increase from the Trip freq. value
Since df/dt we set here is lower than relay df/dt setting relay the relay tripping is allowed
When frequency reaches the under-frequency tripping value the internal timer in the relay will be
activated
Since the hold time is longer than the actual relay tripping time we can get the relay tripping time
after delay time is over
This tripping time will then be recorded in the test result
129
PowerTest Protection
Fre. Stop
This value should be lower than the Trip freq. setting in group setting page.
Note: When the normal frequency is higher than Fre. Stop value, it is under-frequency, the frequency
will decrease, or vice versa over-frequency, it will increase.
df/dt start
From where the df/dt will change by step
df/dt stop
Test will terminate when df/dt reaches this value.
df/dt step
For each cycle of test the df/dt will change with this step setting
Hold time
Step duration which should be longer than the actual relay tripping time setting
Frequency will start to decrease/ increase from the nominal frequency with the df/dt value set by
df/dt start. Normally the df/dt start is higher than the actual df/dt setting so the relay will not trip
for this first cycle of test.
When frequency reaches the end frequency defined by Fre. Stop the frequency will return to
nominal frequency and a new cycle of test will start.
In the new test cycle the frequency will decrease with a new df/dt value which is one step (df/dt
step) lower than the df/dt used in last test cycle
Test will be terminated in the cycle where relay trips and the df/dt value used in this cycle will be
recorded in the test result

dv/dt
This setting should be lower than the actual relay dv/dt setting in order to make relay trip.
Note: When the Vpp or Vpn. Stop value is higher than normal voltage, it is under-voltage, the voltage
will decrease, or vice versa over- voltage, it will increase.
Hold time
Step duration which should be longer than the actual relay tripping time setting
Nominal voltage will be applied for the time defined by prefault time setting to reset the relay
After prefault time is over the voltage will drop to V.Stop value (lower/ higher than the voltage
setting) defined here with the speed of dv/dt (lower than dv/dt blocking setting) for a time
defined by Hold time (longer than the trip time setting)
The trip time will then be recorded in the test result
141
PowerTest Protection
Note: When the Vpp or Vpn. Stop value is higher than normal voltage, it is under-voltage, the voltage
will decrease, or vice versa over- voltage, it will increase.
dv/dt start
From where the dv/dt will change by step
dv/dt stop
Test will terminate when dv/dt reaches this value.
dv/dt step
For each cycle of test the dv/dt will decrease with this step.
Hold time
Step duration which should be larger than the actual relay tripping time setting.
Voltage will start to decrease/ increase from the nominal frequency with the dv/dt defined by dv/dt
start. Normally the dv/dt start is higher/ lower than the actual dv/dt setting so the relay will not trip
for this first cycle of test.
When voltage reaches the end voltage defined by V. Stop the voltage will return to nominal
voltage and a new test cycle will start.
In the new test cycle the voltage will decrease/ increase with a new dv/dt value which is one step
(dv/dt step) lower than the dv/dt used in last test cycle
Test will be terminated in the cycle where relay trips and the dv/dt value for this cycle will be
recorded in the test result

CT starpoint
Here we define the direction of CT.
Normally we can determine the direction by looking at the bias equation in relay instruction manual
Example:
Equation Id=IA+IB indicates that CT direction is toward the protective device. Thus we need to select
tow.prot.obj
Example:
Equation Id=IA-IB indicates that CT direction is toward the transmission line. Thus we need to select
tow.line
Bias. Equ.
Here we select the equation which defines Ir/Id characteristic. This equation is available from relay
instruction manual.
K1, K2
They are bias quantities in the bias equation and can be found in relay instruction manual
Test Phase
Here we can define to test only one phase or to test three phases at the same time.
A, B, C only one phase will be tested
ABC 6 currents will be injected into the relay under test. And the tripping time for all three
phase will be got
AB, BC, CA phase-phase fault will be tested
Resolution
This setting is related to Search Mode selection.
For dichotomic mode this resolution setting will be used to assess the current tripping point. If the
difference between the output value of the current tripping point and the value of the last un-tripping
point is less than this setting then the current tripping point will be determined.
For linear mode this resolution indicates the minimum step can be set.
Note:
We can set a bigger resolution to reduce the test time. But this may bring bigger error in the test result.

Configure channels
In Channel A drop-down selection box we can view all voltage channels from the COMTRADE file and
we need to assign one voltage from the list to the Va output of our test set.
40
PowerTest Advanced
Two channels can be combined together to get a new output. This happens when we need to get the
voltage or current which is the vector summation from two voltage or current channels.
Example
• • •
I a ' = ( I a − I b) / 3
• • •
I b' = ( I b − I c ) / 3
• • •
I c' = ( I c − I a ) / 3
In case the recorded data is for the primary side we need to set the ratio for PT and CT.
Here we can see the maximum voltage and current for this COMTRADE file. Proper setting of PT and
CT ratio will avoid them exceeding the available output range of the test set in use.

5. Synchronizer
This module is used to check synchronizing relay.
The following test functions are included
67
PowerTest Advanced
Purpose of synchronizer
Synchronizing relay is used for the following purpose
Synchronize the generator to the system
Synchronize the two parts of power network
Manually close the circuit breaker
Check the synchronization status
Principle of synchronizer
The synchronizing relay will measure the voltages, phase angle and frequencies of the two system.
When voltage, phase angle and frequency difference between the two system meet the pre-defined
condition the command will be sent by synchronizing relay to close the circuit breaker.
T1 pulse width
T2 pulse cycle
The pulse width and pulse cycle settings are associated to the response time of the generator’s voltage
and frequency regulating system.
For some relays these settings are internally build and for some other relays these settings should be
set separately.

The selection of the voltage sources depends on the requirement of synchronizing relay under test.
Ref. Phase
Here we define the reference phase for generator side voltage when we select Vs->Vz Vg->Vabc
mode.
For example, if Vz is connected to the synchronizing relay as Vab then we need to select Vab here.
Trans. Connect
The PT (potential transformer) use for system side and generator side may have different vector group.
And the phase shift caused by this vector group difference must be considered. We need to select the
vector group based on the actual situation.

dv/dt dv/dt for controlling voltage to change when receiving the voltage control command from
synchronizing relay.
df/dt df/dt for controlling frequency to change when receiving the frequency control command from
synchronizing relay.
Example 1: V-Value
Test process:
Since the frequency difference is set within the allowed setting the voltage difference will be the only
factor to influence the synchronizing action.
72
PowerTest Advanced
The voltage will change one step for each cycle (0-360 deg). The test will terminate when circuit
breaker close command from synchronizing relay is sensed by test set.
Note:
The Fg must be set in the way that Fs-Fg is not equal to zero.
Example 2: F-Value
Test process:
Since the voltage difference is set within the allowed setting the frequency difference will be the only
factor to influence the synchronizing action.
The frequency will change one step for each cycle (0-360 deg). The test will terminate when circuit
breaker close command from synchronizing relay is sensed by test set.
Test process:
Since the voltage difference is set within the allowed setting the frequency difference will be the only
factor to influence the synchronizing action.
The frequency will change with a speed set by df/dt when receiving the frequency control command
from synchronizing relay. The duration for frequency to change is determined by the frequency control
pulse width.
The test will terminate when circuit breaker close command from synchronizing relay is sensed by test
set
Example 4: Auto
Test process:
The voltage and frequency will change with a speed set by dv/dt and df/dt when receiving voltage and
frequency control command from synchronizing relay. The duration for voltage and frequency to
change will be determined by the voltage and frequency pulse width
The test will terminate when circuit breaker close command from synchronizing relay is sensed by test
set.
Example 5: Vadj.-PulseWidth
Test process:
Since voltage difference is larger than allowed setting the synchronizing relay will send voltage
adjustment pulse to test set.
Test set will measure the pulse width and cycle accordingly and record them in the result.
Note:
The Fg must be set in the way that Fs-Fg is not equal to zero.
Example 6: Fadj.-PulseWidth
Test process:
Since frequency difference is larger than allowed setting the synchronizing relay will send frequency
adjustment pulse to test set.
Test set will measure the pulse width and cycle accordingly and record them in the result.
