Dynamical Systems in Neuroscience

The document discusses dynamical systems in neuroscience. It describes the structure of neurons and how action potentials are generated. It explains integrators and resonators in neurons and introduces the Hodgkin-Huxley model of neuronal firing. The document discusses phase portraits and bifurcations in neuronal dynamics and provides a classification of different types of neurons based on their dynamical properties.

Dynamical Systems and Building Models

A dynamical system
consists of a set of variables that describe its state and a law that
describes the evolution of the state variables with time (i.e., how
the state of the system in the next moment of time depends on the
input and its state in the previous moment of time).

ṁ = αm (V )(1 − m) − βm (V )m
ḣ = αh (V )(1 − h) − βh (V )h

The variables n and m are called activation variables and h is

inactivation variable. The coefficients αn , βn , αm , βm , αh and βh
denote rate constants for the opening and closing of gates.
