An operating system (OS) manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for programs. It acts as an intermediary between users and computer hardware, making the system convenient to use. An OS also manages hardware and software resources to prevent errors and improper computer use. An OS lies between the computer hardware and application layers, allowing users to access applications that execute programs to solve problems efficiently.
