Packaging waste has become a major environmental issue as the world's population grows, increasing

the demand for multi-layer packaging (MLP). As a result, there is a push to develop alternative
methods for recycling such materials. Composite material production has become a significant
concern for mechanical recycling of plastic waste. Fly ash (FA), a powder produced by coal
combustion in thermal power plants, causes several environmental issues, including air pollution and
the need for large disposal sites. FA could be used as a filler in polymer composites to improve their
properties while lowering manufacturing costs. This study describes the creation of a novel value-
added composite made of fly ash (FA) and flexible multi-layer packaging (MLP). FA is added to
MLP in varying amounts up to 40% by weight. The composite was created using a single screw
extrusion technique at maximum temperatures of 260 °C and screw rotation speeds of 100 rpm. An
injection molding machine was used to make test specimens for mechanical property evaluations.
Mechanical properties such as flexural, impact, and compression were measured using ASTM D790
and ASTM D695. The density of the composite material was determined using the ASTM D792
standard. The results show that incorporating FA into MLP improves the mechanical properties of the
composite.

Pengaruh penambahan abu terbang terhadap sifat mekanik buangan limbah plastik multi layer
packaging

Fly ash merupakan produk samping dari sisa proses batubara yang biasa di jalankan pada pembangkit
listrik. Saat ini fly ash belum termanfaatkan secara maksimal dimana produk samping fly ash ini
masih diperlakukan dalam bentuk land field. Demikian juga limbah plastik Multi Layer packaging
yang saat ini menjadi permasalahan secara global masih tidak mudah untuk dilakukan recycle
dikarenakan dari limbah tersebut masih mengandung bermacam-macam bahan semisal polyolefin,
polyester dan aluminium. Untuk memberikan nilai tambah terhadap limbah multi layer packaging ini,
pada penelitian ini dilakukan penambahan fly ash untuk mengetahui sifat mekanik compressive
strength sesuai standard ASTM 695, hardness shore D sesuai standard ASTM 2240 dan sifat fisik
melt flow rate sesuai standard ASTM 1238 . Variasi penambahan fly ash dilakukan sebanyak 5, 10, 20
, 30 dan 40 % berat. Pemrosesan awal dengan mencampur fly ash dengan limbah MLP menggunakan
single screew extruder pada temperatur yang diatur secara gradual dari hopper menuju ke die cetakan
berupa pelet dari temperatur 190 -260 OC dengan putaran screw sebesar 100 rpm . Selanjutnya
sampel dalam bentuk pelet ini dilakukan pencetakan dengan menggunakan mesin Injection molding.
