For the past few months, we have been bombarded with mountains of problems, schedules, conflicts,

and deadlines. Aren’t you tired of walking through these realities of life? Well, we must say that these are
inevitable but it does not necessarily mean that we can’t take a break and breathe in.
In this module, we will climb another mountain but this time, it will be a mountain of learning,
enjoyment and fun. This will discuss the various forms and types of mountaineering based on different
circumstances. It will also showcase the importance of following the rules and safety in engaging oneself in
this form of recreational activity.
Learning what to do in hikes and climbs is essential and fun as well. Students who know how to
prepare for a hike will find this skill useful.

Activity Title: Say, “Height!”
Learning Target: The learner will be able to discuss the nature of different recreational activities
(PEH12FH-IIa-20; DepEd).

CONCEPT NOTES
MOUNTAINEERING – It refers to the sport that attempts to reach the high points in mountainous regions,
mainly for the pleasure of the climb.
HIKING – It is done on man-made road or well-made trails that is basically shorter in distance.
TREKKING – It is done over a variety of terrain and takes a longer time to hike.
BASIC FORMS OF MOUNTAINEERING
1. ROCK CLIMBING – It is the sport of climbing rock faces, especially with the aid of ropes and special
equipment.
2. ICE CLIMBING – It is the activity of ascending into inclined ice formations.
3. MIXED CLIMBING – It is the sport of climbing a combination of rocky and ice routes.
TYPES OF MOUNTAINEERING PEAKS BASED ON ACCESSIBILITY
1. OPEN PEAK – Everyone is allowed to climb this peak of mountain without any special permission.
2. PROTECTED PEAK – It is located on international borders and/or in sensitive and strategically
important areas of the country. Permission from the authorities is necessary.
TYPES OF MOUNTAINEERING PEAKS BASED ON STATUS
1. CLIMBED PEAK – It refers to the peaks that have been successfully climbed, at least once.
2. VIRGIN PEAK – It pertains to the peaks that are still unscaled, even once, though some already
attempted.
TYPES OF MOUTAINEERING PEAKS BASED ON DIFFICULTY
1. CLIMBING PEAK – This peak requires both special mountaineering gear and technical skills.
Generally, Generally, it is higher than other peaks, hence, it requires more time to
climb.
2. TREKKING PEAK – This peak neither require special equipment nor skills. Usually, a long hard trek.

EXERCISE
Directions: Philippines is known to be a country that is rich in natural resources, most especially in land
forms. Hills, valleys, cliffs, islands and mountains are among the spots that attract tourists from
different parts of the world. In line with this, do a research and name one (1) mountain from the
Philippines that will correspond to the following terms below. Write a brief description for each
of your given mountain (i.e. location, height, etc.). Answer/s may be repeated.

1. You and your close friends want to spend your weekend together. After a thorough discussion, your
friends decided to do mountain trekking, however, none of you have any mountaineering gears and skills.

you knows what to do. What has been wrong in their situation? Explain your answer.

3. After surviving a tragic event in your mountain trekking life, you are invited to give a simple talk among a
