Science 9 Q1 - Week 8 Day 2 1

(1) Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth at all levels, from genes to ecosystems. The document then lists some of the Philippines' most endangered and threatened species. (2) It defines the terms endangered and threatened, explaining populations have become so low they are at risk of extinction. (3) Extinction occurs when the last member of a species dies. The document emphasizes the importance of biodiversity and protecting endangered species.

What is Biodiversity

➢ The term biodiversity (from

“biological diversity”) refers to the
variety of life on Earth at all its
levels, from genes to ecosystems,
and can encompass the
evolutionary, ecological, and
cultural processes that sustain
life.

THREATENED
➢ When the population of a species begins declining rapidly
➢ are likely to be at the brink in the near future.
The Top 5 Most Endangered species in the Philippines are
(1) the Philippine Crocodile,
(2) the Mindoro Bleeding Heart,
(3) the Roufous-Headed Hornbill,
(4) the Hawksbill Sea Turtle and
(5) the Red-Vented Cockatoo.

ENDANGERED
➢ population has become so low that it is possible of becoming extinct.
➢ are at the brink of extinction now.

EXTINCTION
➢ occurs when the last member of that species dies.
THE GEOLOGICAL
TIME SCALE (GTS) is a system
of chronological measurement that
relates stratigraphy to time, and is
used by geologists, paleontologists,
and other Earth scientists to describe
the timing and relationships between
events that have occurred throughout
Earth’s history.

Evidence from radiometric dating

indicates that Earth is about 4.54
billion years old. The geology or deep
time of Earth’s past has been
organized into various units according
to events which took place in each
period.
THINGS TO PONDER:

➢ Now is the time to embrace change, because even in the

pandemic, we are experiencing perhaps disappearance
of living organisms that even human beings can not
adapt .

➢But creative innovations are everywhere, discover new

approaches instead of just waiting for solutions and
blaming others for mistakes. The only way to succeed
over time is to exceed the effort of making the
environment safe for everyone.
Let us dig deeper:

1. What are the causes of extinction?

2. How important is the role of human
beings in making or destroying our
environment?
3. What can you do as a student to
protect the environment?
