Study of Compounds Notes

This document provides instructions for the laboratory preparation of hydrochloric acid (HCl) via the reaction of sodium chloride (NaCl) with sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Sodium chloride is preferred over other metal chlorides for this reaction because it is cheap. Hydrogen chloride gas is collected by the upward displacement of air since HCl is denser than air and soluble in water. Concentrated nitric acid is not used because it is volatile and would vaporize along with the hydrogen chloride gas. The delivery end of the thistle funnel must be dipped in concentrated sulfuric acid to prevent the HCl gas from escaping through the delivery tube. The temperature in the reaction should not be too high to avoid potential
