Chapter 1:

Planning = a management function that involves setting goals establishing strategies to achieve the
goals and develop plans.

Why is this important?


 Provides direction
 Reduces uncertainty
 Minimizes waste and redundancy
 Establishes goals and standards

Strategic plans: apply to the entire organization and address main goal.
Operational plans: plans that encompass a particular department.
Long term: 3+ years short term: <1 year
Specific plans: clearly defined with one interpretation.
Directional plans: flexible and can be determined differently.
Single-use plan: one-time plan for unique situation.
Standing plans: ongoing for repeated activities.

Traditional goal setting: top managers set goals that flow down the organizational structure.
Management by objectives: setting mutually agreed goals and use them for appraisal (feedback).

Steps in goal setting:


1. Review organization mission statement.
2. Evaluate available resources.
3. Determine the goals alone or with a team.
4. Write them down and communicate them.
5. Review results.

Formal planning department: a group of specialists whose responsibilities are helping to write plans.

Issues in planning:
 Continuous changing external environment
