hw1 20221-1

This document contains instructions for homework 1 of PHYS 502: Analytical Mechanics for the 2021-2022 spring semester. It includes two problems involving the dynamics of blocks on inclined planes and beads on circular wires. For problem 1, students are asked to use principles of virtual work, D'Alembert's principle, Lagrange's equations of the first and second kind, and Newtonian mechanics to derive the equations of motion for a block on an inclined plane undergoing uniform rotation. For problem 2, students must use generalized coordinates and modified D'Alembert's principle or modified Lagrange's equations of the second kind to derive the equations of motion and force of constraint for a bead on a vertical circular wire connected to a

PHYS 502: Analytical Mechanics

2021-2022 Spring
Homework 1
Due: Monday, October 24 2022, at 23:59
Note: Scanned version of your solutions should only be submitted online as a single pdf file.

Problem 1
A block of mass m is free to slide along a inclined plane. The block is attached to the bottom and top points
of the plane by two identical massless springs with stiffness k and relaxed length L as shown in the figure. The
length of the inclined plane is given as 2L.
The plane itself is set to a uniform rotation with angular velocity Ω by an external agent and the block remains
in contact with the surface of the plane at all times during the course of motion. The motion takes place under
an uniform gravitational field g pointing downward. There is no friction in the system.

(a) Assume that the angle θ of the plane is fixed at a value θ = θ0 : const so that the system is in equilibrium.
Use the principle of virtual work only, find the position of the block.
Now let us go back to the general case where the plane makes a uniform rotation as indicated above.
(b) Use the D’Alembert’s principle only, obtain the equations of motion of the block.
(c) Use the Lagrange’s equations of the 1st kind only, obtain the equations of motion of the block.
(d) Use the Lagrange’s equations of the 2nd kind only, obtain the equations of motion of the block.
(e) Obtain the equation of motion of the block by using the Newtonian method.

Problem 2
A bead of mass m which is connected by a massless spring of constant k to the bottom a vertical circular wire
of radius R is otherwise free to slide along the wire as shown in the figure below. The spring is relaxed when
the bead is at the top position. There is a frictional force between the bead and the wire which is proportional
to the speed of the bead (take kf as the proportionality constant). The gravitational field g is pointing down-
ward. The purpose of the problem is to obtain the equation(s) of motion for the bead (involving the effect of
nonconservative force) together with the force of constraint.

(a) Choose suitable generalized coordinate(s) and then use the modified
D’Alembert’s principle only to obtain
i. the equation(s) of motion, and
ii. the force of constraint.
Note that no credit will be given if any other approach is adopted.
(b) Use the modified Lagrange’s equations of the 2nd kind only to obtain
i. the equation(s) of motion, and
ii. the force of constraint.
Note that no credit will be given if any other approach is adopted.
