INFORMATION SHEET 1.1

The Tourist attraction is the center of attention in a tourist destination. The tourist
attraction is like a movie that you want to see in the cinema, while amenities include the
popcorn, the seats, the toilets, the ticket booth, the sound system, etc. The convenience of getting
to the cinema from your house is also part of the things that you are likely to consider when
deciding to see a movie. The Tourism Product refers to the total experience of getting to the
cinema, watching the movie, and enjoying the cinema’s amenities.

In the aforementioned example, the tourism site is the cinema, while the tourism
attraction is the movie. A tourism site refers to a place that houses the attraction and amenities.

( From left: Taboan Market, Skywalk, and Magellan’s Cross)

TOURISM SITE AND SIGHT FEATURES

A tourism site is different from a tourism sight. The latter refers only to what the eyes can
see, such as beautiful sceneries. On the other hand, a tourism site involves not only the sense of
sight but also the other senses as well, such as touch, smell, sound, and taste. In this regard, the
features of a tourism site are:
1. Tourist Attraction: include tourism sights, events, the site’s history, etc.
2. Tourist Accommodations- include hotel and resorts.
3. Access- includes airports, seaports, bus, and train system.
4. Amenities- include banks, internet and mobile phone access, health facilities,
security, etc.
A tourism site can be privately owned, complex, an island, a city or a province.
How do we differentiate an excellent tourism site or destination from one that is
mediocre?
The Canadian Tourism Commission (n.d) uses the following criteria.
1. Must sell a “signature experience” which is authentic and unique to (the destination),
engages a variety of senses, and offer opportunities to experience (the destination)
culture, history, cuisine and people.

2. Must meet international demand, which is based on understanding the target tourist
and meeting their expectations.

3. Must practice a high standard of international marketing, which includes functional

websites, high-resolution and right-free images, video clips, social media campaigns,
willingness to host familiarizations tours, and to link with supplier and partners.

TOURISM INFORMATION SOURCES

Information about tourism and attractions may be obtained from the following
sources:
 Tourism, commission, ministries, or destination management organizations. In the
Philippines, these include Provincial/City/Municipal Tourism offices and the
Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Offices.
 The tourist themselves through their blogs and feedback sheets.
 Electronic sources, such as websites, social media, and online videos officially
uploaded by tourism establishments.
 Books, brochures, pamphlets, flyers, and travel guides.
 Familiarization trips.
 Interviews with locals

We can classify the abovementioned sources of information into two: Primary and
Secondary. Primary Sources of information refer to those with first-hand experience of
the destination. One way to gather primary information is by joining familiarization trips.
School field trips are examples of this activity. Secondary sources often refer to reports
and publications. Primary sources are usually preferred over secondary sources but they
are not always available.
Technical data refers to specialized information that may be too difficult for non-
industry practitioners to understand. An example is statistics that seem to make no sense
if not explained in layman’s terms. Another example is exact coordinates of a place,
which are incomprehensible to people who cannot plot them on a map.
It is important to triangulate information. Triangulation means cross-checking with
other references to make sure that the information gathered is accurate and authentic.

APPLYING RESEARCH METHODS IN TOURISM

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines research as “the careful, systematic study to
gather and report new information about something”. In basic education, we learned that the
process of careful and systematic study, sometimes referred to as scientific method, starts by
asking a question and coming up with research objectives before gathering facts and evidences.
The same goes for doing tourism research. The first step is to define what you would like to find
out, before going through the aforementioned sources of information sources of information.
You would also need to define the point of view or the target audience for your research: is it for
students, foreigners, sports enthusiast, or others? As noted by Canadian Tourism Commission the
product must meet the demand. Lastly, conclusions and recommendations must be stated.
The following format is usually used in research:
1. Introduction and point of view
2. Statement of the problem
3. Review of related literature
4. Methodology or description of how data is gathered and analysed.
5. Presentation of findings
6. Analysis
7. Conclusion and recommendations
Analysis refers to the process of breaking something down to its component elements to
have a better understanding of the whole. For example, we can analyse the attractiveness of a
tourism site or destination by looking at each of its components such as the individual tourist
attractions, accommodations and amenities, as well as their marketing plans and programs.
By knowing each component, we can have a better understanding of a particular tourism site.
Learning Task 2:
Direction: Look back at the school trips you joined or the stories told by classmates who
joined them. Fill out the table below with details. (9 points)

book the fieldtrip through your agency?

The exercise above gives you a total of perfect score of 20 points. Your answers in
numbers 1 to 3 above are what we call recommendations. Recommendations are the suggestions
