“Readings in Philippine History”

03 Activity 3 - ARG

1. Summarize two (2) learning resources from 03 Readings: The Site of the First Mass.

The two (2) readings are all about where the first Mass in the Philippines was held, whether it
was in Masao Butuan, Mazzua, or Limasawa Island in southern Leyte. It is written that 488 years
ago, on March 31, 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan "rediscovered" the
archipelago and made history. Then, 400 years later, the three locations competed to be the
site of the First Holy Mass, causing controversy. The three locations claim to be the venue of
this historical religious rite when they learn of the Pope's visit to the Philippines to celebrate
the First Holy Mass. During his visit to the Philippines, Pope Francis noted that the Church in the
Philippines was preparing to commemorate the fifth centenary of the "first proclamation of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ on these shores." The National Historical Institute (NHI) has already
reached a conclusion after a two-year study that in 1996 it reaffirmed the popular belief
propelled by Republic Act 2733 that the first Holy Mass was celebrated in Limasawa Island on
March 31, 1521. The NHI cited Antonio Pigafetta's memoirs, which chronicled Ferdinand
Magellan's expedition, as "the only credible primary source that yields the best evidence of the
celebration of the first Christian Mass in the Philippines. Republic Act 2733, which was passed
as a result of the government's failure to conduct a thorough investigation, declared the site
where the First Mass was held at Magallanes, Limasawa Island in the province of Leyte, to be a
mistake committed by the government. Then Mr. Hontiveros, a local historian, said that they
might have failed in the amendment of the law. Still, they were victorious in convincing the
majority of historians that the First Mass was indeed held in Masao, Butuan, 488 years ago.

2. State the viewpoint/argument of each resource.

In the First Resource the (Amazing Butuan (2009). Site of the first mass, after 488 years
controversy continues) is agreeable because it presents evidence. But in my opinion, since
Republic Act 2733 was passed and become a law still declared that Limasawa Island in southern
Leyte is where the First Mass was held. Even the time when the pro-Butuan advocates didn't
manage to change the law because the evidence they presented was not sufficient to change it
to Masao Butuan, in the end, the law is a law. While in the second resource (Danao, E. L. (2015).
Where was the first Mass in the Philippines held?) in my opinion is true enough to convince
many people, because the Republic Act 2733 declares that the first Holy Mass was celebrated in
Limasawa Island on March 31, 1521, not in Masao Butuan. Even the National Historical Institute
(NHI) has already reached a conclusion after two years of study.
3. Present what evidences that each resource used to support this viewpoint/argument.
