Annex A (informative)
Uncertainty of the mean hardness value
of hardness-reference blocks

Precise estimation of the uncertainty in a hardness test is difficult due to the com-
plexity of various conditions involved with the test and difficulty in establishment of
reference values. In this Annex, direct and indirect verifications for calibration ma-
chine involved in uncertainty of hardness test are considered and examples of calcula-
tions are presented.

A.I Direct verification of the hardness-calibration machine

A.I.l Calibration of the test force
See Annex B of JIS B 7725.
A.1.2 Calibration of the indentation measuring device
See Annex B of JIS B 7725.
A.I.3 Verification of the indenter
See Annex B of JIS B 7725.
A.I.4 Verification of the test cycle (loading condition)
See Annex B of JIS B 7725.

A.2 Indirect verification of the hardness-calibration machine

NOTE: In this Annex, the index "CRM (Certified Reference Material) means,
according to the definitions of the hardness testing standards, "Hard-
ness -Reference Block".
By the indirect verification with primary hardness-reference blocks, the overall func-
tion of the hardness calibration machine is checked and the repeatability, as well as
the deviation of the hardness calibration machine from the actual hardness value, are
determined.
The uncertainty of measurement of the indirect calibration of the hardness calibra-
tion machine follows from equation (A. 1) :

U
CM
= ~U2CRM_P + u 2 xCRM-l + U 2 CRM_D + u 2 ms ........................... (A. 1)

where, UCRM-P: calibration uncertainty of the primary hard-

ness reference block, according to the calibra-
tion certificate for k = 1.
UxCRM-l: standard deviation of the hardness calibration
machine due to its repeatability

PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT
8
B 7735 : 2010

UCRM-D: hardness change of the primary hardness-

reference block since its last calibration due to
drift
U ms : uncertainty due to the resolution of the hard-
ness calibration machine

Example

considering the requirement in 4.1a).

JA.2 Indentation measurement

JA.2.1 General
The accuracy of indentation measurement in controlling the testing machine for
measuring the hardness of the reference block and for calibration, should preferably be
controlled using the reference indentation to be obtained by the method specified in JA.4
below, and satisfy the requirements of JA.2.2 and JA.2.3.
NOTE: The accuracy control of the measurement of indentation specified in
JA.2.1 to JA.2.3 is applied to a measuring person and the indentation
measurement device.
JA.2.2 Stability of indentation measurement
The stability of indentation measurement should preferably be indicated in terms of
the control limit of the mean value when the reference indentation or the constant in-
dentation 1) is repeatedly measured, and satisfy the requirements specified in table JA.2.
Note 1) The indentations, specified for comparative measurement of length of
diagonals marked on hardness-reference blocks.

Control limit is obtained by the following formula:

measurement
dj : value obtained by the following formula:
-d =_Ld._
j 1, i=l, 2, ...... , n

di : individual measured value of in-
dentation
d value obtained by the following formula:

d = - - , ] - l , 2, ...... , k
k
where, k: number of repetitions

Measurement should be repeated on each working day of hardness measurement,

and the control limit is calculated after k = 25 to 30.
When the control limit is first obtained, or when the stability of the indentation
measurement is required to be newly obtained, the standard deviation of the variance
of the mean values is obtained from the data obtained by repeating 5 measurements
every several days, and the value which is twice the obtained standard deviation is the
control limit.
JA.2.3 Correction of deviation
The deviation of the measured values by a measuring person (or an automatic meas-
uring device of indentation) is obtained by measuring the reference indentation, and
corrected by the following procedure.
a) The reference value of the diagonal length of the reference indentation is deter-
mined by the method specified in JA.4 below.
b) The deviation is obtained by subtracting the reference value of the length of the
diagonal from the measured value of the reference indentation.
c) The correction value is obtained by the following formula.

e= -0[1- ;: ~
where, C: correction value of the deviation of the indenta-
tion measurement
8: deviation of the indentation measurement
a: standard deviation of variance of the indentation
measurement

JA.3 Stability of hardness measurement

The stability of the hardness measurement should preferably be indicated in terms
of the control limit, and controlled within the value specified in table JA.3.

Table JA.3 Control limit of mean value of hardness measurements

(confidence coefficient 95 %)
Unit: %
Hardness Hardness range HV
symbol 100 to 200 700 to SOO
HVO.Ol ±5 ±10
HVO.05 ±5 ±7
HVO.l ±5 ±5
HVO.2 ±5 ±4
HVI ±2.5 ±2.0
HVIO ±O.S ±O.S
HV30 -
±0.5
HV50 - ±0.5
HVIOO - ±0.5

The stability of the hardness measurement is controlled in the stage of either hardness
symbol (test force) and the hardness specified in table JA.3.
The control limit is the value for the mean value of the measurements at 3 points, and
obtained by the following formula:

where, LH: control limit of the mean value of the hardness

measurements
H j : value obtained by the following formula:
- LH
Hj = - - ' ,i=l, 2, ...... , n
n
where, n: number of repetitions, n = 3
Hi: individual hardness values
H value obtained by the following formula:
= LHj '-
H=-k-,]-l, 2, ...... , k

where, k: number of repetitions

JA.4 Reference indentation

a) The reference indentation is the indentation in which the reference value of the
length of the diagonal is determined.
b) The reference value of the length of the diagonal is determined by the following

methods.
1) Indentations are repeatedly made in the reference block of excellent uniformity of
hardness with a series of test forces in 5 stages or more in the relationship of geo-
metrical series for each range and stage of the required test force, and the length
of the diagonal is measured.
2) The least square estimated value of the deviation is obtained by the following for-
mula using a series of the measured values of indentation in 1) above.

di = dij - 5 j = aF/
where, Fi test force (N) (1= 1, 2, ..... .)
:

di length of the diagonal of the indentation with the

:

test force Fi (!-lm)

dij: measured value by a measuring person (or an
automatic measurement device of the indenta-
tion) j 0'=1, 2 .. .) of the length of the diagonal of
the indentation with the test force Fi (!-lm)
6j : deviation of a measuring person (or an automatic
measurement device of the indentation) j (!-lm)
ex: constant determined by the experiment
y: index determined by the experiment

3) The reference value of the length of the diagonal is determined by correcting the
measured value of the indentation in 1) by the deviation obtained in 2), and the
reference indentation is obtained.
c) The reference indentation for practical use is calibrated by the comparative meas-
urement with the reference indentation determined in b) above.
d) The reference indentation for practical use is supplied from the calibration agent,
etc. which can supply it. The confidence limits of the reference value of the diago-
nallength are as follows with the confidence coefficient of 95 %.
When an objective lens of the magnification of 10 to 15 : ± 0.6 !-lm
When an objective lens of the magnification of 20 or more: ± 0.4 !-lm

JA.5 Confidence limits for reference values

The target value of uncertainty of the mean value of the hardness to be marked on
the reference block of hardness is as specified in table JA.4.
