DISCUSS p42
Analyze the following headlines using the Correspondence Theory.
Manananggal Terrorizes Manila Man Gives Birth to Twins

1. Are these headlines believable? Why do you think so?

- Based on the statements above, I can say that both headlines are not believable as it seems .
Manananggal is a fictional creature that is known to have wings and flies have of it s body at
night and it is believed to not exist . Moreover , it is just a tale to make people believe that
unseen creature does exist . Thus , it is impossible for a fictional creature to terrorize a city
in reality . More so , it only appears in stories to scare people out . On the other hand , the
statement " Man Gives Birth to Twins " is definitely a deception to people . As far is science
is concerned , a man is incapable of bearing a child or an offspring which is why it is really
hard to say that a man gave birth to a twins . For a man does not possess any trait or
characteristics that are needed to carry a child . Hence , both statements are considered to
be unreliable at the same time unbelievable .

2. Have you come across statements or claims that you considered unreliable? What made you
think so?
- Yes, there is so much information nowadays which are considered to be unreliable. For
instance, the proliferation of fake news, is timely and relevant, however, it is not deliberated
as reliable and true. Furthermore, there are claims which have no strong basis and support,
thus, making them tricky and inaccurate. Moreover, its supporting details are not enough to
suffice the main idea or topic which is being escalated all throughout the nation. Sources of
news or issues must be reliable enough to confirm their validity.

1. What ideas or beliefs in your view are given primary importance in Philippine culture? Why is
this so?
- There are so many superstitious beliefs that the Philippines still value even up to this day.
For instance, the kissing of the hands of the elders, or " pagmamano ", symbolizes respect in
the Philippine culture. More so, it is a way of requesting a blessing from the elders. In
Philippine customs and traditions, respect is a value that is highly appreciated and
recognized. Furthermore, Filipinos are known to be hospitable, it is a trait that is innate to
us Filipinos. The Philippines is known to cater to its guests with kindness and care. Hence,
these beliefs are still relevant to society, whereas, and people still lived up to this day.

2. What ideas in Philippine society and politics have undergone significant changes over the past
few decades? What brought about these changes?
- I believe the occurrence of Democracy in the Philippines paved the way for the significant
changes that the society has been living up to. This was once marked as a historic moment
of victory for Filipinos via the overthrow of President Ferdinand Marcos during the Edsa
Revolution. Over the decades, unchecked historical revisionism has led people to believe
that democracy is the cause of all the economic stagnation in the Philippines and that
therefore, we need to bargain away even more of our freedoms in favor of autocratic
control by the government. Instead of believing that democracy is a solution, it led to people
having thoughts that it was fraudulent.

1. Why is testing and verification important in determining the truth?
- Truth exists and is the essence of life. Truth, on the other hand, cannot be perceived or
experienced through any of our senses. Truth is not a thought, belief, or concept. Truth
cannot be expressed in words because all knowledge is of this world and appears in the
mind. Truth is not of this world, which is known as the world of duality because it is the
world of form. In reality, there is no such thing as you, me, or God...there is only One, and all
life is a part of that One.

2. Have you ever used practical means to figure out the truth about something? Write and
illustrate your experience here
- I certainly hope so. The only way to find out the truth is to sift through the muck. Truth is
elusive, but it is not impossible to discover.

1. What are some of your personal biases?
- Being human means having personal biases. We all have subjective world views that are
shaped and influenced by our experiences, beliefs, values, education, family, friends, peers,
and others. Being aware of one's biases is essential for both personal and professional
success.

2. How do these biases affect the way you deal with other people’s views and opinions?
- However, not all biases are so innocuous. As Lai points out, "bias can often lead us in
directions we don't expect, that we don't intend, and that we might even disagree with if we
knew it was nudging us in a particular way." These are the kinds of biases that can be
harmful when people allow them to influence their behavior toward certain groups, and the
biases that his Diversity Science Lab is attempting to redirect through their research.
