BUILDING ENGLISH, NON-COGNITIVE & CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Free one-year enrichment program
Student Workbook

About This Resource

The English classes organized by the Freedom English Academy, are aimed at building comfort,
confidence and competence in oral communication. The one hour forty-five minute weekday class  is
designed using international language learning framework. For 30 minutes, students listen and learn from
computer based program. Thereafter, for 1 hour 15 minutes, with the Facilitator’s guidance, the students
practice the learnt concepts in the Workbook and through oral communication activities.
Along with developing communication skills, Freedom English Academy is also committed to building
cognitive and non-cognitive skills among its students, making them independent thinkers and responsible
individuals. The language lessons are layered with activities to nurture a problem-solving mindset among
students who become active contributors in their communities.
The purpose of this Workbook is to serve as a comprehensive resource for first-generation learners of
English language, organizing information to facilitate comfort with the language at the Beginner level
(Level I).
At the end of every week, there is a review/consolidation lesson, where the students recapitulate the
learning of the week before moving on to new content. The facilitator is to ensure that the students use a
pencil to complete the workbook exercises as it will allow them to make changes, if required.
This Student Workbook comprises 48 lessons as a part of Level I (Book 1) to be completed in two
months. After the successful completion of early Beginner (Level I), regular attendance and certified by
Evaluator to meet the promotion criteria, students will be given Book 2 for late Beginner (Level I).
The Student Workbook must be left behind at the Centre, after the completion of the 1 hour 45 minutes
class. Students must carry their own completed Workbook at the time of Evaluation. After completion of
Book 1, keep it in the centre for reference during Book 2 as well as for evaluation at the end of Book 2.
Students may be allowed to take the Workbook home after he/she completes Level I.
It is advisable that the students use a pencil to fill the Workbook.
The Student Workbook comprises 48 lesson, as a part of early Beginner (Level I) to be completed in two
months. At the end of the two months, the Facilitator and Student Evaluator will assess language
acquisition by the students to determine progression to later Beginner (Level I).

SHARED READ THE PASSAGE WITH A FRIEND:

In early days of phone service, you would call the operator and ask to be
connected to a particular line. This system was questioned by Alexander
Graham Bell’s friend Dr. Parker. The town was suffering from an epidemic of
measles and Dr. Parker suggested that if the town’s phone operators fell ill, it
would be difficult to run the phone service. Numbers instead of names, was
seen as a better solution. This, you know, is still in use today.

LESSON 12

CONSOLIDATION
A. READ THE PASSAGE GIVEN BELOW AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS:

The Journey of Chocolate

Mmmm, chocolate. We buy it for family and friends, we eat it
as a treat, but do we know where it comes from? Amazingly,
all chocolate starts as a slimy white bean in a large cocoa
pod. These pods grow in the jungles of Kerala, as well as in
Africa and South America. The farmers dry the beans, and
then send them to a factory where they get made into
delicious chocolate. Finally, the chocolate is sent all over the
world! So your chocolate might have travelled a long way to
get to your shop.

B. READ THE PASSAGE GIVEN BELOW AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS:

Tomatoes are the fruit of the tomato plant. They were first found in South America.
Because the tomato has seeds and grows from a flowering plant, it is considered to be a
fruit and not a vegetable. In 1887, US laws imposed a tax on vegetables, but not on
fruits. The US Supreme Court rules that tomatoes were to be considered as vegetables
since they were served with dinner and not as a desert. However, botanically it is still a
fruit. China is the largest producer of tomatoes followed by USA and India. There are
more than 7500 varieties of tomatoes grown around the world. Most tomatoes are red
but other colours are possible such as green, yellow, orange, black and purple. Tomatoes
are good for heart and fight cancer.

floor, open to the sky, is where
people sleep. The towers, with
thatched roofs of straw, are used to
store grain.

The healthy stove

The kitchen is an important part of an Indian home. However, many Indian rural
families have open stoves in the home, which can be and harmful in many ways.
Rural women have to travel long distances to collect firewood and the smoke is
extremely harmful. Just a day of breathing smoke from traditional stoves can be
the same as 14 days of cigarette smoking. Thus, rural women have to bravely face
fire hazard, along with the risk of cancer and other lung diseases.

Many companies and NGOs are developing safer stoves for rural families. One of
these models is the Philips Chulha. Although it uses firewood, it has a chimney to
keep harmful smoke away from the family’s lungs. Also, its design is very efficient:
It can save 10kg firewood every day. If it breaks, its parts can be replaced easily.
Imagine the difference this stove could make in a family’s life!

1. What are some problems with traditional wood burning stoves?

3. What difference can this stove make in a family’s life?

B. 1. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

Can anyone in Delhi remember a time when we did not suffer from pollution? Even
when I was a child, I was sometimes not allowed to play outside because the
pollution was so bad. The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris last
year rated Delhi as one of the most polluted cities in the world. Our government
cannot clean up the air without the help of the people. I believe it is everybody’s
responsibility to do what they can. Do you have to drive your car every day, or can
you take the Metro? Do you have to take a private Auto, or can you take the bus? It
is time to stop thinking about ourselves, and start thinking about everybody’s
needs: and we need cleaner air!

Regards,

Ravi Kumar

Dear Sir,

Everybody knows pollution is a problem. However, nobody is doing anything. Why?

Because people are selfish. The solution is not to sit around waiting for people to
change, but to develop technology that will solve our problem for us. Cars can be
made cleaner! We can build nuclear power stations! Maybe one day someone will
create the technology to clean our air. Until then, there is no point making your life
difficult by taking the bus or Metro. One person’s actions do not count for much.

Regards,

Manish Kapoor

B. Read the passage with the help of your partner:

Imagine that the brain is like a house with two levels - Upstairs and Downstairs.
Downstairs is where feelings, breathing, reaction to danger live. Upstairs is still under
construction till mid-20s. This is where thinking, planning, imagining, problem solving
live.

A brain that works well, decisions by Upstairs brain after communicating by sending
messages to Downstairs brain and working together. Sometimes when something
happens or someone says something to us, our Downstairs reacts faster than the
Upstairs brain and takes control - so we feel strongly and quickly not allowing Upstairs
to work. So we take action based on strong feelings rather than thinking and planning.
This can be good for us sometimes like

THE PICNIC
It was a beautiful day. Mother, Gina, and Tony went to the park for a picnic.
They brought food to eat and games to play. They chose a picnic table near the
flowers. Tony and Gina went to play and mother read a book. Later, Mother put
out the food. “Come and eat!” she called. Tony and Gina sat down. Soon, they
had many visitors. Bees! The bees landed on the food, they sat on Gina’s head
and buzzed in Tony’s ear. Mother swatted them but they wouldn’t go away. “I
think I have an idea,” said Mother. She put jelly and fruit on a plate. Then she
put the plate on the ground away from the table. The bees followed her! Now
the bees had their own picnic. Mother, Tony and Gina ate their food. Mother
read a story and then it was time to go home. It was a fun-filled afternoon.
