Website Navigation
3
Let Us Study

The internet is quickly becoming everybody’s best friend. Few mouse clicks
point us to a nearby beauty salon where we can do our hair; several keystrokes
take us to an online shop; with a few tap on our phones, distance is lessened
between or among people from different places. For many of us who use the
internet to buy things or deliver products or services, the ability to navigate website
is crucial to their success. Navigating the cyber world has become a life skill in our
everyday lives as we use the internet.

Knowing the basics of website navigation or the basics of browsing the web
is very important for easier access in today’s world of technology.

Activity 1: Website Check!

Direction: Check (√) whether the following websites are familiar to you or not.

Websites Familiar Not

Familiar
1. www.facebook.com
2. www.shopee.com
3. www.youtube.com
4. www.instagram.com
5. www.lazada.com
6. www.twitter.com
7. www.sunstar.com.ph
8. www.englishgrammar.org
9. www.reddit.com
10. www.amazon.com

Every day we use countless websites that it becomes second nature to us, but
do you know what is a website? Are you familiar with the different types of websites
and how to navigate them? Let’s try to understand it in the discussion below.

7
What is a Website?

Websites come in a nearly endless variety, including educational sites, news

sites, forums, social media sites, e-commerce sites, and so on. The pages within a
website are usually a mix of text and other media. That said, there are no rules
dictating the form of a website.
A person could create a website of nothing but black and white photos of
roses, or the word "cat" linked to another Web page with the word "mouse."
However, many sites follow a standard pattern of a homepage that links off to other
categories and content within the website.
The homepage (or simply “home”) represents the main page of the site itself.
Frequently, the homepage is a sort of “hub” from which all other pages can be
accessed. An internal web page to which several other pages are linked in a
coherent structure (such as a specific category of topics) is instead called a “parent
page.”
Every page is a single HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) document, and all
of them are connected through hyperlinks (or simply “link”) which can be combined
in a navigation bar for ease of use.
Websites are hosted on servers, and require a web browser such as Chrome,
Firefox, or Internet Explorer to be visited (either on a computer or mobile device).
A website can be accessed directly by entering its URL (Uniform Resource
Locator) address or by searching it on a search engine such as Google.
Originally, websites were categorized by their top-level domains. Some examples
include:
• Government agency websites = .gov
• Educational institutions’ websites = .edu
• Nonprofit organizations’ websites = .org
• Commercial websites = .com
• Information sites = .info
Although these top-level domains extensions still exist, they say little about
a website's actual content. In modern days’ internet, the ".com" extension is by far
the most popular domain, together with many other country-specific extensions
(.it, .de, .co.uk, .fr, etc.).

What are the Different Types of Websites?
1. BLOG WEBSITES

You’ve likely come across blogs in your browsing experience, but for those
who aren’t familiar, they’re online journals or informational pages that are
regularly updated.

Typically managed by an individual or a small group, a blog can cover any

topic – whether it’s travel tips, financial advice, or doughnut reviews. While they’re
often written in an informal or conversational style, professional blogging has gone
on to become an extremely popular method of making money online.

2. E-COMMERCE WEBSITES

An e-commerce website is an online shopping destination where users can

purchase products or services from your company.

A robust e-commerce web page makes it easy to browse products, filter by

categories, highlight special sales and make purchases.

Screenshot www.shopee.com

9
3. PORTFOLIO WEBSITES

A portfolio website allows creative professionals a place for showcasing their

best work. This is perfect for artists, writers, designers, filmmakers, furniture
builders—you name it.

As you build a portfolio, there’s no need to add every single project you’ve ever
worked on. Instead, focus on creating categories of items and highlighting the best
work from each category. A portfolio website is a bit more creative by nature, so
this is the place to try unique layouts and add in interesting features.

4. NEWS OR MAGAZINE WEBSITES

News and magazine websites need little explanation. The primary purpose of
a news website is to keep its readers up to date on current affairs, whereas online
magazines will focus more on entertainment.

Screenshot www.inquirer.com

10
5. SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITES

We all know Facebook and Twitter, but social media sites can take many other
forms. These sites are usually created to let people share thoughts, images or ideas,
or simply connect with other people in relation to a certain topic. Social media sites
are also increasingly becoming the go-to destination for people to read up on the
news.

Screenshot www.facebook.com

6. TV or VIDEO STREAMING WEBSITES

One of the most popular Internet activities is online web streaming. It allows
you to watch video from across the country or even across the world. Whether you
want to watch news, funny videos, vlogs, tutorials, TV shows, or a product review,
you can find it in any video streaming websites. The most Netflix, along with
YouTube have revolutionized the way the world watches television.

7. EDUCATIONAL WEBSITES

These websites are designed to display information on certain topics, either

using interactive games or engaging designs such as creative and fun tools to keep
the user hooked.

What is Website Navigation?

Website navigation is the process of navigating pages, apps, and websites

on the internet. The technology behind it is called hypertext or hypermedia.

Hypertext or media is text-based web pages that use hyperlinks to connect

them to other pages on the internet. A hyperlink is a link that leads your web
browser to a URL. Hyperlinks are often blue and underlined.

The URL indicates which file the browser should access from the server and
it downloads and renders the data so the user can see it.

Internal links lead to different pages on the same domain. External links
lead to different pages on another domain, a completely separate website and
server.

Website navigation uses menus with internal links that make it easy for
visitors to find the page that they are looking for. Good navigation is an essential
element of a user-friendly site.

12
What are the Features of a Website Navigation?

1. HOMEPAGE
The home page of a website is the opening page, usually located at your
main website URL. Its goals are usually to:
• Welcome visitors
• Help them realize they’re in the right place
• Immediately make it clear what you do
• Guide visitors further into the website

Home pages can be long or short, containing a lot of information or just a

little, depending on your goals.

Keep in mind that the home page is not always the first page that visitors
land on when they enter your website. So every page on your website should lead
visitors to learn more about you and take action, not just the home page.

2. SLIDER

A slider on a website is a changing content area with different “slides” of

visuals or information. The slides may include a large image and they may also
include text and buttons overlaid on top.

13
3. HEADER

The header of a website is the consistent area at the top of the site that
includes the logo and navigation menu.

Example of a website header on the Naylor Landscape website, highlighted in red

A header might include:

• Logo
• Navigation menu
• Tagline
• Phone number
• Address
• Search box
• Buttons
• Social media icons
• Login or My Account link

4. NAVIGATION MENU

The navigation is part of the header and includes the links that take visitors
to other parts of your website.

5. PRIMARY/SECONDARY NAVIGATION

Note that navigation can include both primary and secondary navigation
menus. Two separate navigation menus are used when there may be a lot of
navigation needed, and you want to be clear which links are most important.

14
The Vitale-Robinson website includes a primary menu (larger) and a secondary menu (smaller, in a black bar)

The primary menu includes the main, most prominent links. These are links
to high-value pages on the website like the Services and Contact pages.

The secondary menu includes other links that may not be as transactional or
important. This might be links to Login, My Account, or Employment.

6. SIDEBAR

A sidebar is an area of the website used to display information that’s not part
of the page’s main content.

A sidebar can include an opt-in, call to action, links to other parts of the
website, links to popular or recent blog posts, advertisements, social media links,
or a brief “About” paragraph for context.

A website with the sidebar highlighted

Sidebars used to be very trendy places to throw everything you didn’t want a
website visitor to miss. Today, though, there is a lot more talk around the idea
that sidebars just add distracting clutter to a website.

15
7. CALL TO ACTION

A call to action (sometimes abbreviated CTA) is a word, phrase, button, or

image that asks a website visitor to take a specific action. It is simply a website
element asking your visitors to do something.

Some of those possible next steps that make a great CTA:

• Call us today
• Contact us now
• Schedule a consultation
• Sign up for our webinar
• Register now
• Schedule a tour
• Book a free session

8. FOOTER

The website footer is the consistent content area at the bottom of every page
of your website. Consider it the bottom bun on the website cheeseburger (if the
header is the top bun).

The footer can be anything from a single line of copyright information to a

multi-section area with contact information, a map, links, opt-ins, social icons, a
search box, and much more.

The footer is also where users expect to find Contact information, a My

Account link (if applicable), and legal pages like your Privacy Policy.

16
What are the types of Website Navigation?
Navigation is a key element of any website—it’s how the user gets from section
to section, and to specific content. Most website navigation nowadays follows a
handful of specific formats that, because they're familiar, won't leave your site
visitors confused about how to access your content

1. HORIZONTAL TEXT

Horizontal text-based navigation is probably the most common style found

online. This type of navigation consists of a horizontal list of the sections of the
site, generally named in one or two words each. It can either be created with
graphics or straight HTML text, both of which can have rollovers for a bit of user
interaction.

2. VERTICAL SIDEBAR NAVIGATION

Vertical text navigation is also quite common and is often used for sites
requiring a longer list of button bar items, expandable navigation, or for titles of
longer length. Vertical navigation is most commonly found along the left side of the
webpage, though right side navigation can be effective if designed properly or if for
secondary navigation. Vertical navigation is often used for a second button bar,
such as for sub-sections of a major section found in a horizontal bar at the top of
the page.

17
3. DROP-DOWN MENUS

Drop-down menus are often used along with horizontal navigation, and allow
the user to jump not just to the main sections of the site, but also to many of the
key sub-sections. Sites with a lot of content can certainly benefit from drop-downs,
as they eliminate a click to your content.

Screenshot

4. ICONS OR GRAPHICS

Integrating icons or other graphics into your navigation can create an

intuitive interface. The user will associate the icons with the content they
represent, creating an even clearer approach to a button bar. A set of navigation
icons should be created in a consistent style with each other and the site as a
whole, as they should improve the site design rather than create a distraction. It
should also be clear what they represent. Adding icons just to make a design look
better may not serve the best interests of the site.

18
5. HAMBURGER NAVIGATION MENU

The hamburger menu is most often seen in mobile web design. With this style,
the navigation items are often listed horizontally on larger screen sizes and collapse
behind a hamburger button on smaller screen sizes. When visitors click on this
three-line icon, a vertical drop-down or horizontal pop-out appears with the
navigation links. This type of design is ideal for mobile apps or sites where real
estate is limited.

https://www.nettlestudios.com/

6. FOOTER NAVIGATION MENU

A footer menu is typically paired with — and expands upon — a horizontal

navigation bar. If a visitor doesn’t find the nav link they’re looking for in the header,
they can scroll down to the bottom of the page for more options.
